3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
November arrives and we begin to feel the
cold! I have been told that this winter will
be fierce, so make sure you have plenty of
food and some milk stocked in the cupboard and in the freezer.
As we prepare for the winter, so we also prepare for Christmas:
shopping for presents, planning where we will be and who we
will share time with, organising decorations, stocking up on the
food we buy only at this time of year…
Most of us will have plenty to do over the next 6 weeks.
In fact, we may even begin to complain that we don’t know how
we’re going to manage to fit it all in.
Given the ‘reason for the season’ we need to remember that
God has to fit in there somehow too.
As much as we can fill our busy lives with many things – and
always make room for one more thing – how good are we at
making room for Jesus? How much of our time do we give to
being with the One who really matters?
When you find that time for God has disappeared, start giving it
back with short sentences: “Be with me today Lord”, “Thank
you for a good day”, “Lord, give me strength”; work up to longer
moments, when you are able to hear His response. We can all
do two things at once! Brushing your teeth in the morning and
asking God to be with you in the day; brushing your teeth at
night and thanking God for all that you have achieved that day.
Just little daily reminders that God is always there, whatever
you’re doing, and it really doesn’t take much time or effort…
And it makes such a difference. Try it!
And may God bless your preparations.
Sue

"The Army came and took our 2 horses, the soldiers said they were

horses would be safe at the Front. I never saw the 2 horses ever
again and my Daddy didn't come home."

You have been told
The funeral service just barely finished, when there was a
massive bolt of lightning, followed by a tremendous clap of
thunder, accompanied by even more thunder rumbling in
the distance . . .
The little old man looked at the vicar and calmly said,
'Well, she's there.'

8. BROMLEY DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA
On Saturday 29th September Bromley District held their annual
Swimming Gala at Eltham Leisure Centre. This year, as well as all Cub
Packs from Bromley District being invited to take part, so too were all
the Scout Troops and Explorer Units. Representing the 22nd Bromley
Cub Scouts Pack were: Arthur Maunder, Cameron Macaulay, Henry
Bullock, Joseph Harris, Joshua Bullard, Oliver Hutchins and Samuel
Bagguley. They did exceptionally well (no heats this year –straight into
the finals) in all of the 7 events. In the Ball Race Joshua came 4th, in
the Relay Cameron, Joseph and Samuel were beaten into 2nd place
by a ¼ stroke!
In the Raft Race Arthur, Henry and Oliver led all the way, but were
beaten into 2nd place due to a mix up of not putting their raft on the
side of the pool at the finish. In the underwater swim Oliver, I began
to wonder when he was going to come up for air, swam almost 14
metres and came 1st, and in doing so won a bet with his dad! In the
Freestyle Joseph came 1st, in the Breaststroke Cameron came 1st
and in the Pyjama Relay Cameron, Joseph and Samuel came 1st.
4 FIRST’S, 2 SECOND’S (very, very almost first’s)
and 1 FOURTH.
A tremendous result and YES we DID WIN with an outstanding total of
51 points.
I would again like to take this opportunity of saying WELL DONE and
CONGRATULATIONS to you all.

10. CHRISTMAS CHARITIES
This year the Christmas Tree Festival will be donating all its proceeds to
The Chartwell Cancer Trust.
The Chartwell Cancer Trust is a single purpose charity working to
provide funding to increase the staff to patient ratio in
The Chartwell Cancer and Leukaemia Unit in The Princess
Royal University Hospital in Farnborough, Kent.
The Chartwell Unit catchment area has recently been
increased to cover over one million people.
The Trust currently covers the salaries of two Health Care
Assistants and one Senior Haematologist. It is also responsible for the
permanent appointment of a junior doctor who they funded on an
eighteen month contract until the hospital deemed it necessary to
make this appointment permanent. They are a total charity, there are
no paid officers or staff. Please help us to continue and increase the
support.
It was agreed at the September Church Meeting that the following
charities would benefit.
HFC CHRISTMAS POST Contributions, in lieu of postage will go to the
KENT ASSOCIATION for the BLIND (KAB). They provide a quality
service sensitive to the individual needs of those who are partially
sighted helping them to attain the highest level of independence.
They also give support to those in the community who are "registered
blind" like Gilly Wood and others like her.
The Bromley branch provides emotional support, benefits and
concessions, help with low vision aids, provision of equipment and
minor adaptations. They also give advice on cooking and other skills
for everyday living, independent mobility and help with leisure and
hobbies.
CHRISTMAS DAY. THE SAMARITANS have a help line open 24 hours
every day and are contacted more than 5,000,000 times each year.
That is once every 5 seconds!! It costs £3.88 to answer each contact.
They are almost entirely reliant on voluntary donations. Around 16
people take their own life every day. People contact them about a
wide range of subjects including depression, relationship and family
concerns, loneliness, physical and mental health issues, alcohol,
drugs, self -harm, debt, illness and exam pressures as well as suicidal
thoughts and feelings. Your donations will go to the Orpington Branch
to help local people.

What did those nursery rhymes mean?
Each November, the theme for this section changes. So, for the next 12
months, we will look at the meaning of different nursery rhymes. In the
programme “The bridges that built London”, Dan Cruikshank explored
the meanings behind some of our nursery rhymes. It’s an interesting
look into history...
London Bridge is Falling Down
Goes back at least as far as the 17th century and there are similar old
rhymes from Denmark, Germany and France. One theory has it that
the rhyme refers to the sacking of the bridge by Olaf II of Norway in
1014. Others suggest that it simply refers to the old medieval London
Bridge which, by the 18th century, was in a state of disrepair.
Dan Cruikshank told viewers that monies entrusted to nobility for the
repair of the bridge were not. Eventually, monies were administered
by a public committee. More can be found out at the Museum of
London.

17. Italian Journey, September 2012
Twice before, we have been on journeys (to Turkey and the Holy Land)
led by Rev. John Robinson, a former minister of HFC. We greatly
enjoyed them and learnt much from the interesting places we visited.
So when we heard that John was to lead a journey to Italy, we
decided to sign up for it. We flew to Rome and spent the first few
days in a modest hotel in a side street a stone’s-throw from St Peter’s
Square, which we could stroll around in the evening after supper. The
days were packed with visits to ancient sites like the Colosseum and
the Forum and to Renaissance churches filled with great art, as well
as to the Vatican Museum and St Peter’s itself. The second half of our
stay was spent at a small town that was centrally located for coach
outings to Siena, Florence and Assisi.
We had an excellent Italian guide called Giorgio. John made sure our
group blended well and led us in worship and communion in
meaningful places such as the catacombs and Assisi. He asked after
many of the HFC people, whom he remembered clearly, even
though it is over 20 years since he left. He and Margaret asked us to
pass on greetings.

Talbot House (Toc H)
Toc H is an international charity and membership movement that
emerged from a soldiers' club in Poperinge, Belgium during World War
I. As it nears its centenary, Toc H continues to work within the
community to ease the burden of others and bring together
disparate parts of society.
Toc H's headquarters are in the UK but there are members and

and elsewhere.

In Hugh Dennis’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are, the museum
at Poperinge was visited. There the following was read out: -
"Yet in that little upper room in company with a few dozen men, who
had been tried by fire, as I had been tried, I found for the first time the
courage and satisfaction that other men have agreed to call
a piece (sic) of God which passeth understanding. And I came
down the stairs again ready to face the dangers and troubles of
the morrow".

19. COMMITMENT FOR LIFE 2012 APPEAL
I
HOPE THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY MEMBER OF OUR CONGREGATION
WHO FEELS POWERLESS AND BUTTON-HOLED WHEN IT COMES TO
CHARITY GIVING, AS YOU ALL KNOW WE HAVE FOR YEARS GIVEN IN
GOOD FAITH TO ONE OF THE CHARITIES SUGGESTED BY URC FOR OUR
‘COMMITMENT FOR LIFE’ CONTRIBUTIONS BUT AFTER A RECENT VISIT TO
THE HOLY LAND SOME OF OUR MEMBERS SUGGESTED THAT WE
CHANGE OUR DONATIONS TO THE BETHLEHEM ARAB SOCIETY FOR
REHABILITATION (BASR) AND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED PLEA BY
MARGARET TANNOCK IT WAS AGREED AT OUR RECENT CHURCH
MEETING THAT BASR WILL BE THE AGREED RECIPIENT OF YOUR
CONTRIBUTIONS
‘BASR WAS FOUNDED IN 1960 AS ONE OF LEONARD CHESHIRE’S HOMES.
NOW-A-DAYS, IT IS A NON- PROFIT N G O THAT IS NATIONALLY
RECOGNISED FOR THE COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL AND
REHABILITATION SERVICES IT RENDERS TO BENEFICIARIES FROM
DIFFERENT PARTS OF PALESTINE, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH DISABILITIES
REGARDLESS OF THEIR GENDER, AGE,RELIGION OR SOCIAL CLASS’
HOPEFULLY THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH WILL GIVE YOU A FLAVOUR OF
WHAT BASR IS ALL ABOUT BUT I HAVE ASKED MARGARET TO PUT INTO
HER OWN WORDS THE POWERFUL EMOTIONS THAT WERE FELT BY ALL
THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE BEEN TO SEE BASR IN ACTION
“WE WERE VERY PRIVILEGED TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THIS ES-
TABLISHMENT AND SEE THE WONDERFUL WORK THAT THE STAFF ARE
CARRYING OUT WHICH IMPROVES THE LIVES OF THEIR PATIENTS. HELP IS
OFFERED TO ALL WHETHER FELLOW CHRISTIANS, MUSLIM OR JEW AND
NO-ONE IS EVER TURNED AWAY. THE GREAT THING ABOUT GIVING TO
THIS CHARITY IS THAT WE KNOW THAT EVERY PENNY DONATED FINDS
IT’S WAY TO THE CENTRE TO BE USED FOR GOOD AS IT IS TAKEN OUT
WITH THOSE ORGANISING THE PILGRIMAGES THAT MANY OF US HAVE
ENJOYED”.
THANK YOU FOR THAT MARGARET, IT IS NOW UP TO YOU DEAR
MEMBERS, I UNDERSTAND HOW STRETCHED ALL OUR BUDGETS ARE AT
THESE DIFFICULT TIMES BUT ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN SPARE AND PUT
INTO THE LITTLE ENVELOPE ATTACHED TO YOUR CATALYST WILL BE PUT
TO VERY GOOD USE AND EVERY PENNY WILL GO TO THOSE IN NEED OF
HELP.
THANK YOU

22. HAYES PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
D
id you know that 2012 sees the centenary of the death of
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, the composer responsible for those
full dress Hiawatha performances in the Albert Hall of the
1930s?
"SCT" lived in Croydon and events there have been going on all year.
Now Hayes is to have its own celebration with a performance of
Coleridge-Taylor's Kublai Khan (only very rarely heard), a setting of
the famous poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge-Taylor died
in his thirties, with overwork apparently a factor. He was regarded at
the time as a composer of huge promise, and the quality of his work is
now being rediscovered. So - don't miss this interpretation of those
mysterious words "In Xanadu...." which have intrigued so many and
inspired so many artistic works. Only this one offers you a combination
of STC and SCT!
Besides a performance of a near-local composer's work by your local
choir, Hayes Philharmonic, the concert also features two young
singers from Hayes who will be performing solo pieces. Full details are:

by soloists including TOMOS and FFION LAVERY).

24. Final Thought
Come, Holy Spirit,
Replace the tension within me with a holy relaxation.
Replace the turbulence within me with a sacred calm.
Replace the anxiety within me with a quiet confidence.
Replace the fear within me with a strong faith.
Replace the bitterness within me with the sweetness of grace.
Replace the darkness within me with a gentle light.
Replace the coldness within me with a loving warmth.
Replace the winter within me with your spring.
Fill my emptiness.
Dull the edge of my pride.
Sharpen the edge of my humility.
Light the fire of my love.
Let me see myself as You see me,
that I may
see You as You have promised.
Let me be
Fortunate according to Your Word
“Blessed are they that love God, for they
Shall see God.”
John Whitehead.
