3. The Origins of Comic-Con
Comic-Con International celebrated its 50th anniversary in July 2019 with a four-and-a-half day
convention in San Diego. The event, which included appearances from actors and others in the
entertainment industry, also saw Batman become the first inductee into the Comic-Con Museum
Character Hall of Fame. Needless to say, Comic-Con has become a much larger event than when
it was first launched by a group of teenagers in 1970.
4. The Origins of Comic-Con
The inaugural Comic-Con took place in downtown San Diego art the US Grant Hotel and was
under the adult supervision of comic and film super-fan Shel Dorf, who had previously staged a
similar convention in Detroit. It was then called the San Diego Golden State Comic-Con and
featured guests like Jack Kirby and Ray Bradbury, the latter of whom was a novelist and
screenwriter who authored works like Fahrenheit 451 and A Medicine for Melancholy. It was
renamed San Diego Comic-Con in 1973.
5. The Origins of Comic-Con
San Diego Comic-Con didn't become relevant on a global scale until the early 2000s with the rise
in superhero-driven blockbuster films in conjunction with the expansion of the San Diego
Convention Center. The annual event now draws more than 135,000 unique attendees each day.
