The talk provides an overview of a number of emerging social listening and digital engagement tools such as Visibrain, Audiense, Echosec, Social Elephants, NodeXL, and DiscoverText among others. It provides an overview of a number of tools that are freely available to academic researchers such as Mozdeh, Chorus, TAGS, COSMOS, and Netlytic among others. The talk highlights a number of different research methods that have been utilised by academic researchers, such as machine learning, sentiment analysis, network analysis, and content and thematic analysis which can be utilised to be applied to the domains of commercial data analytics as well as academic research. The talk also touches on the diverse potentials of social data for organisations from forecasting, detecting crisis events, and as an early warning system for organisational threats.

This is a presentation given to the Researcher to Reader conference held in London 15-16 February 2016 (http://r2rconf.com/) Abstract: Universities are, by their nature, tribal; but the tribes extend beyond disciplinary boundaries, with different administrative areas having their own behavioural norms. Increased expectations for researchers and their institutions to be accountable for their funding poses huge communication challenges, particularly for large devolved institutions. Many of these tribes are now having to work together in ways that they have not before, creating an unprecedented opportunity.

Abstract "This paper will discuss the Clarke Stained Glass Studios Collection, a collaborative project between the Library at Trinity College Dublin and the Digital Repository of Ireland. The project is digitising, cataloguing and making accessible to researchers and the wider public the business archives and the designs for stained glass windows of the Clarke Stained Glass Studios, held in the Manuscripts & Archives Research Library at Trinity College Dublin. The collection will be available both through the Digital Collections site at Trinity College Dublin, and through the Digital Repository of Ireland. The paper will explore the relevance of a research-collection based approach to digitisation of library materials; the value of a digitisation project of this kind for teachers, researchers and the general public; the challenges facing such projects; and how these can be resolved through effective collaborations with internal and external partners. The challenges include issues such as the management of the copyright and orphan works workflow; deciding on an appropriate level of description for the digitised materials; metadata mapping; and promoting the collection to the right audience. The strategies to face those challenges include collaboration with library cataloguers, subject librarians and academics; tapping on the expertise of associated projects such as the DRI; and organising research symposia to promote the digital collection internally and externally. The literature on digital collections projects in university libraries will be reviewed in order to provide an international context to our case study. " Biography Dr. Marta Bustillo is Assistant Librarian in the Digital Resources and Imaging Services Department in Trinity College Library, working as Metadata Cataloguer for the Clarke Studios Digitisation Project. Marta has a Ph.D. in Art History from Trinity College Dublin, and an M.A. in Information and Library Management from Northumbria University. She has managed digitisation projects at the library of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and the Fleet Library at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Tim Keefe is a recent transplant to Ireland from the United States and is the head of the Digital Resources and Imaging Services (DRIS) Department at Trinity College Dublin.

In summary: Publishing a paper is the beginning not the end; Making work open access does not mean it is accessible; Writing in plain language is translating, not dumbing it down; Sharing work involves peer networks and publishing platforms and If you don't take control of your online presence someone/something else will. The presentation was originally given as part of the Cambridge University Alumni Festival on 27 September 2015.

What is ‘research impact’ in an interconnected world?

Presentation delivered at the Library Research Symposium. McMaster University, Canada, 3 November 2015. The aim of the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Developing Research Excellence and Methods project, was to develop a formal UK-wide network of Library and Information Science (LIS) researchers (academic and practitioner). The project ran from January 2011 to August 2012, and was supported by the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition. The initial successes of the DREaM project were reported in a paper that Hazel Hall co-authored with Alison Brettle and Charles Oppenheim and presented at QQML 2012. Three years later in summer 2015, Hall and her colleague Bruce Ryan conducted further research to explore any lasting impacts of the project. Those who attended three DREaM research methods workshops in 2011/12 were invited to complete a survey in June 2015. The survey questions focused on LIS work undertaken since the last DREaM workshop in April 2012. Respondents were asked to report on the use of the methods presented at the DREaM workshops; any new DREaM-inspired LIS research and publications, and their impacts; the influence of DREaM on individual career paths; and any on-going contact between those who developed relationships with one another over the course of the three workshops. Further data for the 2015 project – known as DREaM Again - were collected formally from focus groups and more informally through email contact with DREaM workshop participants. In this presentation the main findings of DREaM Again are discussed.

In 2009, the Library and Information Science (LIS) Research Coalition was established in the UK by major players in the LIS landscape. The Coalition had a particular interest in supporting practicing librarians and information scientists, both in how they can access and exploit available research in their work, and in their own development as practitioner researchers. One of the Coalition’s key initiatives was the Developing Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) project, through which a formal UK-wide network of LIS researchers was successfully developed. In this presentation, Professor Hall discusses how the LIS Research Coalition tackled the challenges of LIS research at a national level and reflects on the longer-term impact of the project with particular reference to the findings of the DREaM Again project—a recent follow-up exploration of the lasting impacts of DREaM. Not only have half of the DREaM participants been actively involved in research since the end of the project, but just under half report that their research outputs have already had an impact—informing policy, and/or determining information services provision, and/or developing the LIS research agenda. Analysis of the network ties between the participants reveals that a loose but persistent network of DREaMers endures, wherein both social and work-related connections are important.

The research-practice gap in Library and Information Science (LIS) is well documented, especially in respect of the difficulties of translating research into practice, and resultant lost opportunities. While many researchers attempt to explain this research-practice gap, few suggest strategies to address it. The creation of researcher-practitioner networks, however, is one approach that has been proved empirically to bridge the distance between the two communities. Such a network is currently operating in Scotland, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Research, Impact, Value and Library and Information Science (RIVAL) is part-way through its implementation based around four knowledge exchange events for a network membership of 32 from a wide variety of LIS sectors. RIVAL’s successful delivery depends in part on the project leads’ experience of undertaking, and evaluating the impact of, a UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded grant: the Developing Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) project. Already there are indications that RIVAL is delivering value to network members. There is a strong expectation for this to be enhanced, both in the remainder of the funding period and beyond, offering theoretical contributions to the study of social networks, especially in respect of social capital development to support knowledge exchange.

Collaboration and networking: learning from DREaM and RIVAL

The research underlying this presentation explored the role that libraries play in the linked data context. Focusing on European national libraries and Scottish libraries, multiple data gathering methods and constant comparative analysis were applied in the study. Amongst the findings, a general lack of awareness within the library community of the Semantic Web and the implications of linked data was identified. At the same time, there is recognition that linked data augments the discoverability and enhances the interoperability of library data. The presentation will include recommendations for the application of the findings of this research in practice.

He provides an overview of CILIP’s plans for greater collaboration and co-ordination, and also shares details of work undertaken in NHS England. Vibrant libraries, thriving schools: a national strategy for school libraries in Scotland 2018-2023 is Scotland’s school library strategy. By showcasing the impact an excellent school library service can deliver, the strategy is intended to be used to influence decision-making in respect of school library provision. Martina's presentation outlines about her involvement in the development of the strategy as Chair of the National School Library Strategy Advisory Group, the strategy’s role in advocacy, and its anticipated impact.

Sarah Morton has worked across research, policy and practice for most of her career, and will draw on examples from different settings encountered over this time in her presentation. She is keen to interrogate our learning about effective evidence use from the last 20 years, and review how this can be supported from research and practice perspectives. She will present a vision for the effective use of evidence of all kinds to plan, develop and improve policy, practice, and services. As part of this she will explain some of the ways that she is currently developing tools and support for effective evidence use.
