Our cover this month features

as we go to press, we were
contacted by the Friends of
streatham hill theatre to ask
us to publicise their petition to
Lambeth Council to uphold their
decision to protect the 1928
Grade two listed streatham
hill theatre from possible
destruction by declaring it an
asset of Community Value. this
gives the building protection
from immediate development
- if it is put up for sale, the
streatham community will be
given the opportunity to raise
the funds to take it on.
Now the owners of the building
are appealing to Lambeth
Council to reverse their decision.
the Friends of streatham hill

to convince the council that
the theatre is worth saving
for our community, and in the
future could be a hub for arts

Chalkpit – a New Pub
for streatham
Chalkpit opens on 2nd november in the
old Beyrouth premises. It’s the brainchild of
friends James and tom, who have worked in
the hospitality industry for 20 years between
them and saw streatham as the perfect place
to launch their first site. The pair have lived in
sW London for the last decade and wanted to
be based locally. streatham ticks their boxes
because there are already some great places
to go out eating and drinking, but there’s plenty
of potential for more as the area is evolving
fast.
We’ve been visiting Chalkpit as the
refurb progresses: “it’s been a
hard couple of months getting
everything ready for opening,
but we’re nearly there! the site’s
been empty for over a year, but we
saw the potential and fell in love
with it”, said tom. Chalkpit is tom
and James’ ideal for a modern pub:
great drinks and delicious food served with
a relaxed “stay as long as you want” vibe. the
interior is stunning-retaining the original oak
windows and using original elements to create a
very stylish environment.
attention to detail is crucial to the guys’ vision
for Chalkpit, from a special cold room to ensure
the beers are stored and poured at a perfect
4ºC - to the suppliers they are using. “It was
really important to us to make sure we are proud
of everything we serve, so the food and drink
menus are deliberately short, and crammed with
products we really love”, said James. tom runs a
craft beer distribution company, so the pub has
access to the best beers, meat is coming from
the Ginger Pig butchers and fruit and veg will be
delivered fresh from New Covent Garden market.
head chef matthieu Fessard is ex-Pizarro in
Bermondsey, and he’ll be hand making buns
and flatbreads and getting creative with snacks
on the pub’s Big Green egg barbecues and
custom-built yakitori grill.
We can’t wait to try it out on when it
opens on Friday 2nd november!
“above all we want people to treat Chalkpit as
their new local. the food and drink
will be great, but above all we want
it to be a brilliant place to socialise
and relax.”
We’ll raise a glass to that!

A23 Collisions Update
Chris Holt, Safer A23 Campaign
Provisional statistics from Transport for London
show there was at least one collision every three
days on the A23 in Streatham in 2017 - and,
on average, every month one collision or more
resulted in life-changing injuries.
In total, on Streatham Hill and Streatham
High Road between the South Circular and
the boundary with Croydon, there were 133
collisions in the 12 months to December 2017;
14 of these were seious - resulting in life-
changing injuries. Thankfully, for the second
year running, there were no fatalities.
The underlying trend, however, appears
to be for increasing danger on the
road. Although this can’t be stated
with certainty as, from September
2016 onwards, the police have
used a new method of recording
injuries and figures for serious
and slight injuries are not directly
comparable with previous years
(severity of injuries is thought to have
been under-recorded in the past).
	Total collisions	Serious injury Death
2013 - 17 584 52 5
2012 - 16 530 45 7
2011 - 15 499 38 8

Councillor Nicole Griffiths (pictured with
the Community Roadwatch Team),
said: "I'm grateful to the police for
highlighting the dangerous roads in
Streatham."
We're grateful to the Safer
A23 Campaign and Streatham
Action for their continued
lobbying of TfL and the Council to
make the High Rd. safer for all.

The Streatham
Gourmet visits Hood
Rehema Figueiredo
Hood is now three years old and is a firm
favourite in Streatham, with a reputation for
great modern British cuisine using the finest
seasonal produce.
Nothing is done by halves at Hood, so
we followed suit and began with aperitifs
of Peckham gin and tonic and Negroni,
accompanied by a generous bowl of juicy green
olives and candied nuts (all together, £21). An
exceptionally polite and attentive waiter helped
us navigate “specials” and the less familiar
parts of the menu (cimi di rapa?), but never
hurried us. He explained they had a glut of
truffles in the kitchen, so all dishes were offered
with a topping of truffle shavings, which was
both a luxurious surprise and very endearing.
I started with a ridiculously creamy cauliflower
soup, and its lovely buttery texture slipped
delightfully off my spoon. My partner chose a
pumpkin macaroni cheese from the specials
menu, and it tasted of autumn; a bowl of spiced
comfort and warmth that wasn't over-filling.
Starters are around £8.
My main course was herb roasted Jerusalem
artichokes, celeriac puree, kale, pickled girolles
and truffle dressing - an interesting combination
of textures and a deliciously earthy flavour.
A side of greens loaded with cumin added a
kick. My companion ordered a winning special
again, pan fried bream with brown crab,

mascarpone, spelt risotto and that cimi di rapa
(a lot like kale). The fish was delicate and flaky
with perfectly crisped skin, and the risotto had
absorbed the flavours of the fish wonderfully.
(main courses £9-£19).
to accompany the dinner, we chose a citrusy
Portuguese Vinho Verde with a slight fizz, which
complemented both dishes well. the wine list is
interesting and extensive, and there is a good
selection by the glass and carafe as well as by
bottle. (house white and red are £20 a bottle).
after a short breather, we ploughed into dessert
(ranging in price between £2.50-£9). I was
presented with a delicate panacotta with a
perfect wobble, accompanied by juicy figs, a
drizzle of honey and slim almond biscotti, which
had the crunchy snap to delight Prue Leith.
Our other dessert was a rich peanut butter
parfait with dark chocolate mousse and a
dark chocolate wafer, decorated elegantly with
drizzled salted caramel and candied peanuts.
at hood the food is exceptionally good, the
atmosphere is relaxed, and a range of special
offers make it affordable for most pockets.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a
local barber, and we’ve noticed Streatham’s barber’s
shops are looking great! There are some very smart
premises dedicated to male grooming on the High
Rd, so we checked out a few and discovered that
they’re no longer just for men. Hurrah!
Just as more guys are enjoying the hair salon
experience, there’s a trend for ladies going to the
barber too, attracted by cheaper cuts and inviting
interiors. Stylish shops are creating a warm and
friendly haven for everyone. A good barber doesn’t
discriminate with unisex cuts costing as little as
£9, and kids’ at just £7. Here’s what their loyal
customers have to say about them...

miraculously, the tablet
survived the fire that gutted
the church in 1975 as, at the
time of the conflagration, it
had been temporarily placed
in the crypt pending its re-

renovation works, and since
then it has been exhibited
at the church’s annual

Streatham Remembers The First World War
John Brown, The Streatham Society
STREATHAM PEACE MEDAL
On Friday 18th July 1919
around 7,000 Streatham
school children gathered on
Tooting Bec Common for a
"Great Peace Fete" to celebrate
the official end of the First
World War. The children were
presented with the Streatham
Peace Medal, suspended on
a red white and blue ribbon,
as a memento of the occasion.
The children then sang the National
Anthem accompanied by the local Fire Brigade
band, and there were sports and entertainments
including Punch and Judy, a musical clown,
a conjurer, a ventriloquist, a picnic lunch and
numerous other attractions. The Fete concluded
with a prize-giving and three cheers for
Streatham's MP, Mr William Lane Mitchell, who
had generously donated the Peace medals the
children were all proudly wearing.
ZEPPELIN RAID ON STREATHAM ON THE
23RD/24TH SEPTEMBER 1916
For the residents of Streatham, the horrors of
war were brought to their very homes when on
the night of 23rd/24th September 1916 the
town was bombed in a Zeppelin raid on London.
A huge German airship, the L31, sailed high
above Streatham High Road dropping bombs
as it journeyed northwards. The first bombs fell
opposite Streatham Common Station destroying
Nos 10-13 Estreham Road and killing a lady who
was asleep in her bed at the time of the raid.
At Streatham Hill, a bomb completely wrecked
Streatham Hill Modern School at 70 Streatham
Hill. The blast killed four men in a tram by
Streatham Hill Station, and another passenger
died soon after being admitted to hospital.
During the 15 minutes of the raid, the Germans
dropped a total of 32 bombs, killing seven
people and seriously injuring a further 27.
HILL HOUSE WAR HOSPITAL
SUPPLY DEPOT
In 1915, a War Hospital Supply Depot was
established at Hill House, a large mansion
that stood on Streatham Common North,
opposite the upper pond on the Common. At
its peak, up to 1,200 local volunteers worked
there producing items for use in treating war
casualties in Britain and in field hospitals
overseas. Each volunteer contributed one
shilling (5p) a week to the depot's general fund
for the purchase of materials. The depot was
the second largest of its type in the country and
by the end of the war it had produced 684,276
items valued then at £57,731. Surgical supplies
made at Hill House went to hospitals as far
afield as Alexandria, Milan, Petrograd, Cannes
and Malta.
STREATHAM HALL PATRIOTIC CONCERT
On 10th May 1916 Queen Alexandra made an
official visit to Streatham with Princess Victoria
and Princess Arthur of Connaught. The royal
party attended a children's pageant to celebrate
the first anniversary of the opening of the War
Hospital Supply Depot at Hill House. The Queen
had previously made a private visit to the Depot
on 18th August 1915 when she met many of the
volunteers working there. She made her third
visit to Streatham on 25th May 1917 to attend
a patriotic sale and concert at Streatham Hall to
mark the second anniversary of the opening of
the Depot.
STREATHAM VOLUNTEER TRAINING
CORPS
The Streatham Rifle Club was formed on 8th
September 1914 by local men who wanted to
help the war effort and within a month of its
foundation over 1,500 men had joined up. Akin
to the "Home Guard" in the Second World War,
the club mainly comprised men who were too
heart streatham | 17
Streatham remembers continued
old for active military service. The Club had its
original headquarters at 9 Mitcham Lane, and
drilled on Streatham and Tooting Bec Commons,
as well as the Streatham Cricket Club ground
in Pendennis Road. The Club later became
the Streatham Volunteer Training Corps which
was initially based at the Drill Hall in Estreham
Road. A drum and bugle band accompanied the
volunteers on church parades and marches, the
instruments being donated by the Corp's Hon.
Commandant, Mr. G. H. L. Parsons, of Aldrington
Road, Streatham Park.
CURTIS DAIRY MAID
As the war progressed, the only way the army's
increasing demands for manpower could be met
was through the introduction of conscription.
With so many able-bodied men volunteering
or being called to the colours, women had to
perform traditionally male tasks to keep the
wheels of industry and commerce turning. In
Streatham, milkmen soon disappeared from
local streets to be replaced by "milkmaids" who
took over their rounds. The job of a dairy maid
was a hard one involving rising at dawn to milk
the cows before completing the early morning
milk round, after which there were more cows to
milk and another round to complete.
FURZEDOWN PIG CLUB
With the introduction of rationing in 1917
the demand for locally grown produce to
supplement food supplies increased. Various
pig, poultry and rabbit clubs in Streatham
received a new lease of life to help provide
fresh meat. The Furzedown Cultivation Society
formed a pig club and housed their animals in
wooden stie which stood on solid concrete floors
with "a perfect system of drainage" to ensure a
minimum of smells for the public and maximum
comfort for the pigs.
The sties were inaugurated by the Mayor of
Wandsworth, Sir Archibald Dawnay, at a special
ceremony held in 1918.
STREATHAM WAR MEMORIAL
The bronze statue of a lone soldier, his
head bowed and his hands resting on an
upturned rifle - a military sign of mourning
- commemorates the 720 inhabitants of
Streatham who lost their lives in the First World
War. Standing at the junction of Streatham
High Road and Streatham Common north, the
memorial was unveiled by
General Sir Charles Munro
on the 14th October 1922
before a crowd of around
5,000. The statue was
designed by Albert T. Toft
and identical statues by
the same sculptor were
later unveiled at Stone in
Staffordshire, Leamington in
Warwickshire and Thornton
Cleveleys in Lancashire.

What happens if
I have no Will?
anthony gold soliCitors
doesn’t the law say what
happens to my estate?
Yes the rules on Intestacy decide how your
estate is distributed among your surviving
relatives. this may be quite different from what
you expect. these rules were last updated in
2014 but can still have quite complex effects,
especially for someone leaving both a spouse
and children and, above all, for all unmarried
couples who may find they inherit nothing at all.
i have a common law spouse,
won’t they inherit anyway under
these rules?
It is a common misconception that english
law recognises a “common law” spouse. Only
actual spouses and civil partners are within the
Intestacy rules.
What happens if i have no family?
the estate goes to the Crown. Only if there is a
Will can your estate go to friends or charity.
What else happens if i
don’t make a Will?
a Will decides not only who inherits but also
who administers your estate. If the beneficiaries
cannot agree who will do this, let alone who
inherits, there could be a bitter and long-lasting
dispute, often leading to an expensive court
case.
i don’t have a Will but i’ve written a
letter, everyone knows my wishes.
anything less than a Will has no effect at all
and can be the worst of all worlds, raising
expectations that cannot legally be fulfilled and
creating even more potential for family dispute.
We own a house jointly
so i don’t need a Will, do i?
It’s another common misconception that all joint
property passes automatically to the survivor;
in fact, you may even have set up the original
ownership so that you held separate shares but
your relationship has now changed. If the shares
are still recorded as held separately, the will
needs to say who now inherits.
i made my Will several years ago.
isn’t that enough?
Your circumstances could have changed in
a dozen ways. The chosen beneficiaries may
have died before you, so that the Intestacy
rules once again apply. the tax laws may have
changed so that your original intentions have
been overtaken or nullified by those changes.
You may even have married, when your Will is
automatically revoked.

Thrale Almhouse and
Relief in Need Charity
Paul Lehmann, The Thrale Charity
The Thrale charity has been providing grants to
organisations via its Relief in Need programme
for over ten years. The charity aims to help
organisations and projects that relieve need and
distress in Streatham and the wider local area,
and since inception it has made over £250,000 of
grants available to around 25 organisations.
In 2018 alone, Thrale has provided funds to 17
organisations with a total of £40,000 funding.
People and organisations it has supported this
year have included:
The Advocacy Academy, where Thrale’s funds
have supported three local 16 to18 year-olds to
develop themselves by devising social justice
campaigns
The Home Cooks Project, which encourages
volunteers who like cooking to get in touch with
and cook a hot meal for older neighbours and
make social connections for those who may
otherwise be at risk of isolation and loneliness.
Faiths Together in Lambeth, where Thrale’s
finances have helped to make a mental health
first aid course available to members of faith
communities.
The St. Matthew’s Project, where Thrale
funded free football training for young people from
disadvantaged backgrounds.
Streatham Youth and Community Trust, where
Thrale helped to fund their Good Neighbours
Project, designed to bring different generations
together.
Thrale’s funds have supported 600 people directly
this year, and up to 1,500 people indirectly. Over
the past 10 years, Thrale has also made grants
available to other Streatham organisations
such as Spires, Basaira Elderly Centre, and
Streatham Drop-In Centre for Asylum Seekers
and Refugees. The Charity also runs almshouses
in Polworth Road which accommodate 17
women over the age of 60. The almshouses were
recently redeveloped to bring them up to modern
specifications, and their high standard was
praised by Chuka Umunna MP when he re-opened
them in October 2015.
Now, Thrale is again inviting applications from
groups seeking funds. The criteria for awards
are broad, with an emphasis on seeking to
support organisations that relieve need and
distress and align with the principle of supporting
strong communities and helping people to live
independently, with dignity. Applications from
projects in which 50% or more of the beneficiaries
are in Lambeth, Southwark, or Wandsworth, and
usually they seek reassurance that the projects
are not solely reliant on Thrale charity funding.
Local organisations can bid for up to £5000 and
are encouraged to apply – the process is designed
to be accessible to all – as straight-forward and
simple as possible.
For full details and an application form, please
visit www.thralealmshouses.org.uk. The closing
date for applications is 3rd December.

future: Recycle
Wandsworth oasis
Wandsworth Oasis is a local
charity that was set up almost
30 years ago in the midst
of the AIDS epidemic
to provide support
and care
for people
suffering from
AIDS and
their loved
ones. The
charity was
set up by local
resident, Patrick
Lethaby, who sadly
died this summer.
30 years on – thanks to
medication - things have
changed and HIV/AIDS is no
longer the death sentence
it was – if diagnosed early.
HIV prevalence in the South
London boroughs is much
higher than the London
average so it is as important
now as it was in 1989 that we
continue with Patrick’s legacy
to raise awareness about the
virus and how it is transmitted
and to provide support where
needed.
We do this through some of
the best value charity shops
in SW London! If you haven’t
been in to one of our shops,
do pop in and grab yourself
a bargain. It is getting to
the time of the year when
you might need a sparkling
party dress, a festive jumper,
stocking fillers, Christmas
cards or secret santa ideas!
We love a Preloved Christmas
at Wandsworth Oasis! Mention
Heart Streatham or bring this
magazine with you and get a
10% discount
too! We are
also always
on the look out
for good quality
items to sell – clothing,
accessories, furniture, books,
music, bric a brac etc. We
will collect large amounts of
saleable items free of charge.
And talking of the time of year
– 1st December is World AIDS
Day – It’s an opportunity for
people worldwide to unite in
the fight against HIV, to show
support for people living with
HIV, and to commemorate
those who have died from
an AIDS-related illness. At
Wandsworth Oasis we raise
awareness by hosting the
Red Ribbon Cabaret – an
evening of magic, madness
and mayhem Wandsworth
Oasis style. Expect an evening
of great entertainment – this
year we have a 40 minute set
from one of the best Abba
tribute bands in the country,
Abbalicious; some amazing
drag divas; and a puppet’s
view of the world – amongst
other things! Tickets start at
just £15 for a single standing
ticket to a VIP box for 10 at
£220 with fizz and and an
opportunity to ‘interact’ with
the performers…more details
on how to book opposite.

The conscious part of our brain is usually ‘up to something else’. Perhaps you’re checking
the traffic while crossing the road, yet thinking about what you might be having for dinner
and also remembering to call a friend. You shouldn’t really be ‘aware’ of a part of your
body. Your shoulder or back. Your hip or knee. Your fingers or your feet. That ache or
pain. That niggle or twinge. Our body runs on autopilot for most things, most of the time,
freeing the conscious part of our brain for other stuff...Life!
If you are ‘aware’ or ‘thinking’ about a part of your body—your body is talking to you!
Each November, Leigham Practice offer a limited number of appointments for people to
talk to our team of physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropodists/podiatrists, massage team
and acupuncturist, informally and for free. Maybe you just need pointing in the right
direction. Maybe there’s nothing to worry about and you just need an explanation. If
there’s something going on, we can tell you what we can do. There’s no obligation.
We’ve been supporting our local community for more than 40 years, so don’t sit on a
problem allowing it to get worse—come and talk to us this November.
We’re open seven days a week and four late evenings, so just give us a call!

streatham redhawks
Flying high
streatham enter November in second place in
the National League south table after a strong
start. the redhawks have beaten former Premier
League sides swindon Wildcats and Bracknell
Bees in a run of form that has seen the crowds
at streatham arena steadily build as the team
impress on the ice.
New Canadian forward, alex roberts, leads the
league scoring with 9 goals already this year,
while team mates adam Carr, michael Farn, and
Leigh Jamieson also feature in the top 10.
the team is playing a quick, hard-hitting brand of
hockey with lots of thrills and spills in every game
with only the 7-0 wipe out victory over Invicta
Dynamos that hasn’t been a close-fought affair.
the redhawks have three games across
November with the game on saturday 17th
against Peterborough Phantoms our
‘Kids for a Quid’ heart streatham special
fixture*. On Sunday the 11th and 25th the
redhawks take on London raiders and
Basingstoke Bison respectively.
“We’ve had some big crowds so far this season,
and it makes all the difference to the team as
they skate out” said head Coach Jeremy Cornish,
a former elite league enforcer.
“the fans have played a part in helping us take
some pretty big, and maybe unexpected wins
this year…if we can keep up the momentum on
the ice then we should be sitting pretty. We have
already proved we can skate with anyone in this
league.”

home Grown heroes
a new column celebrating streatham’s stars;-
local people who’ve achieved or done something
great, or kind, or shown outstanding community
spirit – contact info@heartstreatham.co.uk
if you’d like to let us know about a group or
individual we should feature.
this month’s heroes are rebecca Clarke (17)
& theodore alexander (14) a streatham
Junior Ice Dance Couple who are current
advance Novice British Ice Dance Champions,
from the British Ice-skating Championships
2017. they have done extraordinarily well this
year, both as a couple, and particularly for
theodore at 14 – they compete in a category
that’s for men up to 21. They have qualified for
this year's Championships in December.
rebecca and theodore have just represented
Great Britain at the International halloween Cup
in Budapest. they are both GLL Funded athletes
but seek sponsors to help them continue their
quest to represent GBr on the international
stage. Both are locals and live within walking
distance of streatham Ice rink. Please contact
Heart Streatham if you would like to find out
about sponsoring them.

Now the owners of the building are appealing to Lambeth Council to reverse their decision. the Friends of streatham hill theatre have until 29 November to convince the council that the theatre is worth saving for our community, and in the future could be a hub for arts and culture in Lambeth. • 5. heart streatham | 5 Chalkpit – a New Pub for streatham Chalkpit opens on 2nd november in the old Beyrouth premises. It’s the brainchild of friends James and tom, who have worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years between them and saw streatham as the perfect place to launch their first site. The pair have lived in sW London for the last decade and wanted to be based locally. streatham ticks their boxes because there are already some great places to go out eating and drinking, but there’s plenty of potential for more as the area is evolving fast. We’ve been visiting Chalkpit as the refurb progresses: “it’s been a hard couple of months getting everything ready for opening, but we’re nearly there! the site’s been empty for over a year, but we saw the potential and fell in love with it”, said tom. Chalkpit is tom and James’ ideal for a modern pub: great drinks and delicious food served with a relaxed “stay as long as you want” vibe. the interior is stunning-retaining the original oak windows and using original elements to create a very stylish environment. attention to detail is crucial to the guys’ vision for Chalkpit, from a special cold room to ensure the beers are stored and poured at a perfect 4ºC - to the suppliers they are using. “It was really important to us to make sure we are proud of everything we serve, so the food and drink menus are deliberately short, and crammed with products we really love”, said James. tom runs a craft beer distribution company, so the pub has access to the best beers, meat is coming from the Ginger Pig butchers and fruit and veg will be delivered fresh from New Covent Garden market. head chef matthieu Fessard is ex-Pizarro in Bermondsey, and he’ll be hand making buns and flatbreads and getting creative with snacks on the pub’s Big Green egg barbecues and custom-built yakitori grill. We can’t wait to try it out on when it opens on Friday 2nd november! “above all we want people to treat Chalkpit as their new local. the food and drink will be great, but above all we want it to be a brilliant place to socialise and relax.” We’ll raise a glass to that! • 6. 6 | heart streatham A23 Collisions Update Chris Holt, Safer A23 Campaign Provisional statistics from Transport for London show there was at least one collision every three days on the A23 in Streatham in 2017 - and, on average, every month one collision or more resulted in life-changing injuries. In total, on Streatham Hill and Streatham High Road between the South Circular and the boundary with Croydon, there were 133 collisions in the 12 months to December 2017; 14 of these were seious - resulting in life- changing injuries. Thankfully, for the second year running, there were no fatalities. The underlying trend, however, appears to be for increasing danger on the road. Although this can’t be stated with certainty as, from September 2016 onwards, the police have used a new method of recording injuries and figures for serious and slight injuries are not directly comparable with previous years (severity of injuries is thought to have been under-recorded in the past). • 8. 8 | heart streatham The Streatham Gourmet visits Hood Rehema Figueiredo Hood is now three years old and is a firm favourite in Streatham, with a reputation for great modern British cuisine using the finest seasonal produce. Nothing is done by halves at Hood, so we followed suit and began with aperitifs of Peckham gin and tonic and Negroni, accompanied by a generous bowl of juicy green olives and candied nuts (all together, £21). An exceptionally polite and attentive waiter helped us navigate “specials” and the less familiar parts of the menu (cimi di rapa?), but never hurried us. He explained they had a glut of truffles in the kitchen, so all dishes were offered with a topping of truffle shavings, which was both a luxurious surprise and very endearing. I started with a ridiculously creamy cauliflower soup, and its lovely buttery texture slipped delightfully off my spoon. My partner chose a pumpkin macaroni cheese from the specials menu, and it tasted of autumn; a bowl of spiced comfort and warmth that wasn't over-filling. Starters are around £8. My main course was herb roasted Jerusalem artichokes, celeriac puree, kale, pickled girolles and truffle dressing - an interesting combination of textures and a deliciously earthy flavour. A side of greens loaded with cumin added a kick. My companion ordered a winning special again, pan fried bream with brown crab,

The fish was delicate and flaky with perfectly crisped skin, and the risotto had absorbed the flavours of the fish wonderfully. (main courses £9-£19). to accompany the dinner, we chose a citrusy Portuguese Vinho Verde with a slight fizz, which complemented both dishes well. the wine list is interesting and extensive, and there is a good selection by the glass and carafe as well as by bottle. (house white and red are £20 a bottle). after a short breather, we ploughed into dessert (ranging in price between £2.50-£9). I was presented with a delicate panacotta with a perfect wobble, accompanied by juicy figs, a drizzle of honey and slim almond biscotti, which had the crunchy snap to delight Prue Leith. Our other dessert was a rich peanut butter parfait with dark chocolate mousse and a dark chocolate wafer, decorated elegantly with drizzled salted caramel and candied peanuts. at hood the food is exceptionally good, the atmosphere is relaxed, and a range of special offers make it affordable for most pockets. there’s a two course bottomless brunch for £30, thursday pie night (pie and a drink for £14), and a pre-theatre 25% off for streatham space Project ticket holders - see all the specials at www.hoodrestaurants.com. There are some very smart premises dedicated to male grooming on the High Rd, so we checked out a few and discovered that they’re no longer just for men. Hurrah! Just as more guys are enjoying the hair salon experience, there’s a trend for ladies going to the barber too, attracted by cheaper cuts and inviting interiors. Stylish shops are creating a warm and friendly haven for everyone. A good barber doesn’t discriminate with unisex cuts costing as little as £9, and kids’ at just £7. Leonard's church is to reinstall and rededicate its War memorial. this large wooden monument lists the names of 113 men of the parish who lost their lives whilst serving in the armed forces between 1914-18. miraculously, the tablet survived the fire that gutted the church in 1975 as, at the time of the conflagration, it had been temporarily placed in the crypt pending its re- erection in the church. For many years the memorial remained hidden beneath the church until it was recently re-discovered during renovation works, and since then it has been exhibited at the church’s annual remembrance Day service. the rector of streatham, the revd Canon anna norman-Walker, said the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War provides an ideal time to re-erect the memorial in the church. "2018 gives st. Leonard’s the perfect opportunity to reinstall the monument as a permanent reminder of the sacrifice made by the men of streatham in one of the most horrendous conflicts of the 20th century" the rededication service will be held at 10.00am on sunday November 11th and I extend a warm invitation to all those who would like to attend the service to join us for this special occasion." • 16. 16 | heart streatham Streatham Remembers The First World War John Brown, The Streatham Society STREATHAM PEACE MEDAL On Friday 18th July 1919 around 7,000 Streatham school children gathered on Tooting Bec Common for a "Great Peace Fete" to celebrate the official end of the First World War. The children were presented with the Streatham Peace Medal, suspended on a red white and blue ribbon, as a memento of the occasion. The children then sang the National Anthem accompanied by the local Fire Brigade band, and there were sports and entertainments including Punch and Judy, a musical clown, a conjurer, a ventriloquist, a picnic lunch and numerous other attractions. The Fete concluded with a prize-giving and three cheers for Streatham's MP, Mr William Lane Mitchell, who had generously donated the Peace medals the children were all proudly wearing. ZEPPELIN RAID ON STREATHAM ON THE 23RD/24TH SEPTEMBER 1916 For the residents of Streatham, the horrors of war were brought to their very homes when on the night of 23rd/24th September 1916 the town was bombed in a Zeppelin raid on London. A huge German airship, the L31, sailed high above Streatham High Road dropping bombs as it journeyed northwards. The first bombs fell opposite Streatham Common Station destroying Nos 10-13 Estreham Road and killing a lady who was asleep in her bed at the time of the raid. At Streatham Hill, a bomb completely wrecked Streatham Hill Modern School at 70 Streatham Hill. The blast killed four men in a tram by Streatham Hill Station, and another passenger died soon after being admitted to hospital. During the 15 minutes of the raid, the Germans dropped a total of 32 bombs, killing seven people and seriously injuring a further 27. HILL HOUSE WAR HOSPITAL SUPPLY DEPOT In 1915, a War Hospital Supply Depot was established at Hill House, a large mansion that stood on Streatham Common North, opposite the upper pond on the Common. At its peak, up to 1,200 local volunteers worked there producing items for use in treating war casualties in Britain and in field hospitals overseas. Each volunteer contributed one shilling (5p) a week to the depot's general fund for the purchase of materials. The depot was the second largest of its type in the country and by the end of the war it had produced 684,276 items valued then at £57,731. Surgical supplies made at Hill House went to hospitals as far afield as Alexandria, Milan, Petrograd, Cannes and Malta. STREATHAM HALL PATRIOTIC CONCERT On 10th May 1916 Queen Alexandra made an official visit to Streatham with Princess Victoria and Princess Arthur of Connaught. The royal party attended a children's pageant to celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of the War Hospital Supply Depot at Hill House. The Queen had previously made a private visit to the Depot on 18th August 1915 when she met many of the volunteers working there. She made her third visit to Streatham on 25th May 1917 to attend a patriotic sale and concert at Streatham Hall to mark the second anniversary of the opening of the Depot. STREATHAM VOLUNTEER TRAINING CORPS The Streatham Rifle Club was formed on 8th September 1914 by local men who wanted to help the war effort and within a month of its foundation over 1,500 men had joined up. CURTIS DAIRY MAID As the war progressed, the only way the army's increasing demands for manpower could be met was through the introduction of conscription. With so many able-bodied men volunteering or being called to the colours, women had to perform traditionally male tasks to keep the wheels of industry and commerce turning. In Streatham, milkmen soon disappeared from local streets to be replaced by "milkmaids" who took over their rounds. The job of a dairy maid was a hard one involving rising at dawn to milk the cows before completing the early morning milk round, after which there were more cows to milk and another round to complete. FURZEDOWN PIG CLUB With the introduction of rationing in 1917 the demand for locally grown produce to supplement food supplies increased. Various pig, poultry and rabbit clubs in Streatham received a new lease of life to help provide fresh meat. The Furzedown Cultivation Society formed a pig club and housed their animals in wooden stie which stood on solid concrete floors with "a perfect system of drainage" to ensure a minimum of smells for the public and maximum comfort for the pigs. The sties were inaugurated by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Sir Archibald Dawnay, at a special ceremony held in 1918. STREATHAM WAR MEMORIAL The bronze statue of a lone soldier, his head bowed and his hands resting on an upturned rifle - a military sign of mourning - commemorates the 720 inhabitants of Streatham who lost their lives in the First World War. Standing at the junction of Streatham High Road and Streatham Common north, the memorial was unveiled by General Sir Charles Munro on the 14th October 1922 before a crowd of around 5,000. The statue was designed by Albert T. Toft and identical statues by the same sculptor were later unveiled at Stone in Staffordshire, Leamington in Warwickshire and Thornton Cleveleys in Lancashire.
  • 18. 18 | heart streatham promoted Content What happens if I have no Will? anthony gold soliCitors doesn’t the law say what happens to my estate? Yes the rules on Intestacy decide how your estate is distributed among your surviving relatives. this may be quite different from what you expect. these rules were last updated in 2014 but can still have quite complex effects, especially for someone leaving both a spouse and children and, above all, for all unmarried couples who may find they inherit nothing at all. i have a common law spouse, won’t they inherit anyway under these rules? It is a common misconception that english law recognises a “common law” spouse. Only actual spouses and civil partners are within the Intestacy rules. What happens if i have no family? the estate goes to the Crown. Only if there is a Will can your estate go to friends or charity. What else happens if i don’t make a Will? a Will decides not only who inherits but also who administers your estate. If the beneficiaries cannot agree who will do this, let alone who inherits, there could be a bitter and long-lasting dispute, often leading to an expensive court case. i don’t have a Will but i’ve written a letter, everyone knows my wishes. anything less than a Will has no effect at all and can be the worst of all worlds, raising expectations that cannot legally be fulfilled and creating even more potential for family dispute. We own a house jointly so i don’t need a Will, do i? It’s another common misconception that all joint property passes automatically to the survivor; in fact, you may even have set up the original ownership so that you held separate shares but your relationship has now changed. If the shares are still recorded as held separately, the will needs to say who now inherits. i made my Will several years ago. isn’t that enough? Your circumstances could have changed in a dozen ways. The chosen beneficiaries may have died before you, so that the Intestacy rules once again apply. the tax laws may have changed so that your original intentions have been overtaken or nullified by those changes. You may even have married, when your Will is automatically revoked. christopher mcneill

  • 24. 24 | heart streatham Thrale Almhouse and Relief in Need Charity Paul Lehmann, The Thrale Charity The Thrale charity has been providing grants to organisations via its Relief in Need programme for over ten years. The charity aims to help organisations and projects that relieve need and distress in Streatham and the wider local area, and since inception it has made over £250,000 of grants available to around 25 organisations. In 2018 alone, Thrale has provided funds to 17 organisations with a total of £40,000 funding. People and organisations it has supported this year have included: The Advocacy Academy, where Thrale’s funds have supported three local 16 to18 year-olds to develop themselves by devising social justice campaigns The Home Cooks Project, which encourages volunteers who like cooking to get in touch with and cook a hot meal for older neighbours and make social connections for those who may otherwise be at risk of isolation and loneliness. Faiths Together in Lambeth, where Thrale’s finances have helped to make a mental health first aid course available to members of faith communities. The St. Matthew’s Project, where Thrale funded free football training for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Streatham Youth and Community Trust, where Thrale helped to fund their Good Neighbours Project, designed to bring different generations together. Thrale’s funds have supported 600 people directly this year, and up to 1,500 people indirectly. Over the past 10 years, Thrale has also made grants available to other Streatham organisations such as Spires, Basaira Elderly Centre, and Streatham Drop-In Centre for Asylum Seekers and Refugees. The Charity also runs almshouses in Polworth Road which accommodate 17 women over the age of 60. The almshouses were recently redeveloped to bring them up to modern specifications, and their high standard was praised by Chuka Umunna MP when he re-opened them in October 2015. Now, Thrale is again inviting applications from groups seeking funds. The criteria for awards are broad, with an emphasis on seeking to support organisations that relieve need and distress and align with the principle of supporting strong communities and helping people to live independently, with dignity. Applications from projects in which 50% or more of the beneficiaries are in Lambeth, Southwark, or Wandsworth, and usually they seek reassurance that the projects are not solely reliant on Thrale charity funding. Local organisations can bid for up to £5000 and are encouraged to apply – the process is designed to be accessible to all – as straight-forward and simple as possible. For full details and an application form, please visit www.thralealmshouses.org.uk. The closing date for applications is 3rd December.

  • 26. 26 | heart streatham Don't trash our future: Recycle Wandsworth oasis Wandsworth Oasis is a local charity that was set up almost 30 years ago in the midst of the AIDS epidemic to provide support and care for people suffering from AIDS and their loved ones. The charity was set up by local resident, Patrick Lethaby, who sadly died this summer. 30 years on – thanks to medication - things have changed and HIV/AIDS is no longer the death sentence it was – if diagnosed early. HIV prevalence in the South London boroughs is much higher than the London average so it is as important now as it was in 1989 that we continue with Patrick’s legacy to raise awareness about the virus and how it is transmitted and to provide support where needed. We do this through some of the best value charity shops in SW London! If you haven’t been in to one of our shops, do pop in and grab yourself a bargain. It is getting to the time of the year when you might need a sparkling party dress, a festive jumper, stocking fillers, Christmas cards or secret santa ideas! We love a Preloved Christmas at Wandsworth Oasis! Mention Heart Streatham or bring this magazine with you and get a 10% discount too! We are also always on the look out for good quality items to sell – clothing, accessories, furniture, books, music, bric a brac etc. We will collect large amounts of saleable items free of charge. And talking of the time of year – 1st December is World AIDS Day – It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. At Wandsworth Oasis we raise awareness by hosting the Red Ribbon Cabaret – an evening of magic, madness and mayhem Wandsworth Oasis style. Expect an evening of great entertainment – this year we have a 40 minute set from one of the best Abba tribute bands in the country, Abbalicious; some amazing drag divas; and a puppet’s view of the world – amongst other things! Tickets start at just £15 for a single standing ticket to a VIP box for 10 at £220 with fizz and and an opportunity to ‘interact’ with the performers…more details on how to book opposite. • 29. The conscious part of our brain is usually ‘up to something else’. Perhaps you’re checking the traffic while crossing the road, yet thinking about what you might be having for dinner and also remembering to call a friend. You shouldn’t really be ‘aware’ of a part of your body. Your shoulder or back. Your hip or knee. Your fingers or your feet. That ache or pain. That niggle or twinge. Our body runs on autopilot for most things, most of the time, freeing the conscious part of our brain for other stuff...Life! If you are ‘aware’ or ‘thinking’ about a part of your body—your body is talking to you! Each November, Leigham Practice offer a limited number of appointments for people to talk to our team of physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropodists/podiatrists, massage team and acupuncturist, informally and for free. Maybe you just need pointing in the right direction. Maybe there’s nothing to worry about and you just need an explanation. If there’s something going on, we can tell you what we can do. There’s no obligation. We’ve been supporting our local community for more than 40 years, so don’t sit on a problem allowing it to get worse—come and talk to us this November. We’re open seven days a week and four late evenings, so just give us a call!
