In July the Food Standards Agency published results of their survey Food and You showing the food
hygiene rating scheme (FHRS) is being used by consumers more than ever before to assess food hygiene
standards. Use http://ratings.food.gov.uk/ and find out whether a restaurant, pub, takeaway, or food shop
has high standards of food hygiene and safety.
Lambeth Council has carried out new inspections since we last checked the ratings for local cafes, bars,
and restaurants. We are pleased to say that most Streatham food businesses are rated level 3 (hygiene
standards are generally satisfactory) or better.
Here are those that achieved the highest score, 5 (Very good) in inspections since September last year.
Not all establishments that are currently rated 5 are included because they may have not been inspected
in the period or have opened recently. The Earl Ferrers, for example, has a 5 rating from its last inspection
in 2017.

STRENGTHEN
RELAX
With the streatham Film
Festival taking place this
month, we celebrate a
streatham resident who rode
to hollywood stardom.
Ida Lupino was blessed with
great beauty and considerable
talent. she was born on 4
February 1918 at 33 ardbeg
road in herne hill into the
Lupino family, whose theatrical
traditions dated back to the
17th century. King edward
VII had once dubbed them
“the royal family of greasepaint
her father, stanley, appeared
in pantomime and had a
successful stage partnership
with Laddie Cliffe, and in the
1930s he appeared in 14
films, many of which he wrote
himself. at the height of his
success he and his family
moved to streatham and lived
at Holmdene, 152 Leigham
Court road. The house was
one of the largest in the area
and provided a luxurious
and comfortable home for
stanley, his wife Connie and
two daughters rita and Ida. It
was destroyed by the V1 bomb
that fell on 150 Leigham Court
road in august 1944.
at the rear of the house
there was an enormous
garden where the family
relaxed, played croquet, and
built a small theatre to give
performances to friends and
relatives. here Ida learnt to
sing and dance. Ida was a
pupil at st helena’s school in
streatham and aged 13, she
entered raDa where she was
cast in Heartbreak House. In
1933, Ida was cast in her first
film role in Her First Affair.
Five other films followed,
and she was contracted by
paramount and sailed to
the Us. There, her hair was
cropped and dyed blonde
and she became a hollywood
beauty. Her first US film was in

history continued
1934, Search for Beauty.
Folowing a bout of polio which almost ended
her career, Ida made 11 more films with
Paramount before joining Warner. There
she became established, starring in major
films; Light That Failed with Ronald Colman,
They Drive by Night with George Raft and
Humphrey Bogart, The Sea Wolf with Edward
G Robinson and John Garfield and Ladies
in Retirement. In 1941 she starred with
Humphrey Bogart in High Sierra, and in 1942
she won the New York Film Critics Award for
her role in The Hard Way.
In 1949 Ida Lupino co-founded a production
company, co-producing and directing Not
Wanted. She became a highly regarded
and successful TV director, directing episodes
of programmes including The Fugitive, The
Untouchables, The Virginian and Colombo.
Ida Lupino died in Los Angeles on 3 August
1995.

The phoenix Book awards at
streatham & Clapham high school
Submissions are now
being accepted from
publishers
for the 2020
Lambeth Phoenix
Book Awards.
Launched in 2008,
The phoenix Book
award is a literary prize
judged by children from Years
6, 7 & 8 in Lambeth. For the
second year streatham &
Clapham high school hosted
the awards in may, giving
pupils from ten Lambeth
schools the opportunity to
quiz, review and vote for their
favourite authors. as well as
streatham and Clapham high
schools senior and junior
departments, participating
streatham schools this year
included Bishop Thomas
Grant and Dunraven.
The awards help
keep Lambeth
pupils reading
during transition
years (Y5 to Y8)
when they may stop.
In a series of stages
over the year, students select
a shortlist of four favourite
books from a breadth of
genres, and then vote for a
winner.
“phoenix is a rare opportunity
for the authors and the
students to give and receive
new knowledge that can
widen their imaginations and
inspire.” - nurah, age 12,
Dunraven school
shortlisted books this year
were Do you speak Chocolate?
by Cas Lester; The Loneliest
Girl in the Universe by Lauren
James; The Colour of the Sun
by David almond, and scythe
by neal shusterman, which
was the winner.
sChs Librarian, Christine
Belsham, commented “ as
a librarian committed to
promoting literacy and a love
of reading for all children,
when I see so many pupils
from the local community
having a great time together
being inspired by books and
reading, it makes the hard
work of organising this event a
pleasure.”

NorthWood Senior School
Northwood Schools are opening a new
independent senior school in September next
year at 3, Garrad’s Rd. Streatham. NorthWood
Senior will be a co-educational school for pupils
aged 13 to 16. Northwood Schools, which owns
Broomwood Hall and Northcote Lodge pre-prep
and preparatory schools have appointed Susan
Brooks, currently Deputy Head (Academic) at
Broomwood Hall, Head-designate of the new
school.
Susan Brooks graduated from Queensland
University in 2003 and came to the UK in 2007
to teach at Bromford’s School, Wickford, in
Essex before taking up the position of Head of
History at Broomwood Hall in 2008. She was
promoted to Senior Mistress and Director of
Studies before taking on her role as Northwood
Schools Deputy Head (Academic) in 2014.
Broomwood Hall was founded by Katherine
Colquhoun at Broomwood Rd. Methodist
Church SW11 in 1984 with a class of twelve
pupils. Broomwood Hall and Northcote Lodge
now accommodate almost 1,000 children and
are among London’s foremost independent
preparatory schools. Pupils regularly win
places at top schools including Dulwich College,
Emanuel School, Whitgift School, and James
Allen’s Girls’ School.
NorthWood Senior aims to meet demand for
a local day school that addresses the chronic
shortage of secondary places in south London.
It will offer a wide range of subjects, sports and
activities allowing the students to take a varied
range of GCSEs and iGCSEs across the arts,
languages, STEM subjects, humanities, music
and sport. The group places a strong focus on
pastoral care and there will be an equally strong
focus on life skills.

as the new season gets underway,
the new Coach, adam Carr, has had
to mastermind a busy summer of
transfers as streatham redhawks
compete in the new-look national
Ice hockey League south 1. They
are back in familiar company with old
rivals Chelmsford Chieftains, oxford
City stars, slough Jets and Invicta
Dynamos after another league restructure
restored the old english premier League to the
UK hockey hierarchy, albeit under a new name
of the national League.
Last year’s league opponents peterborough,
swindon, Basingstoke, raiders IhC and
Bracknell have stepped back up to the new-look
second tier to compete with northern rivals
Hull, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, Telford and newly
formed Leeds Chiefs. Their departure from nIhL
south leaves streatham as one of the bigger
clubs in their league. expectations are high that
they’re positioned to end a long trophy drought.
“I wanted to put together a team that can win
every trophy we play for, and I believe we have
done that” said coach Carr, who is in his
first coaching role following the departure of
Jeremy Cornish this summer. “I think we have
a great mix of what we need to win silverware
with speed, skill, toughness and real good
characters...”
streatham have brought in former GB junior
internationals, Vanya antonov and ryan Watt,
plus tough forwards, Ben paynter, Brandon miles
and Danny Ingoldsby among eight new arrivals.
In a further boost to ice hockey in sW16, the
streatham under 15s were crowned national
Champions after a 4-2 win over nottingham at
the Bauer Arena in Sheffield. The title is the first
national championship win in over 30 years for
streatham juniors, and well deserved. The junior
club has also added a development team in
nIhL 2 named the hawks, who are set to offer a
bridge between the u18 team and the first steps
into senior hockey for young players.
streatham face Bracknell hornets in a
Challenge game on sunday 8th september
at streatham Ice arena, before starting their
league campaign on sunday 15thseptember at
home to slough Jets.
The home game to Invicta Dynamos
on 28 September is our first
KIDS For A QuID
game of the season, only valid
with a copy of this magazine.
