3. 3am:Their day began to 3am for morning prayers in
the church.
4-6am: the returned to bed for a brief sleep.
6am: silent prayers.
7am: breakfast all meals were eaten in strict silence.
8-9.30am: worked in fields or the library.
10am: high mass in the church.
11-2pm: back to work.

4. 2.30pm: Reading
3-5pm: Work
5pm: Vespers (evening prayers)
6pm: supper
8pm:Compline (night prayer) and retire to bed.

5. There are 8 parts to the monastery.
There’s the church, the dormitories, the cloisters, the
chapter house, the infirmary, the library, the guest
house and the refectory.
the monasteries were used by people who dedicated
there lives to god.
There was set rules in the monasteries made up by
an Italian monk call St. Benedict.
There was different orders for different monks e.g
Benedictines, Augustinians and poor Clare’s.

6. When a boy joined the monastery he was called a
novice. He would learn the rules and see if the life
suited him. If the abbot thought he would make a
good monk he would let him take solemn vows.
These were promises of poverty (he must not own
anything., chastity (he must not marry) and
obedience (he must do what the abbot told him).
Then his hair was cut in a tonsure. This was a bald
patch in the middle of his head. It showed the man
was a monk.

7. If people needed help of monks or nuns they had
to go to them. There was around 1200 of a
different kind of a monk appeared. There were
called friars. Friars travelled around from place to
place helping the poor. One group was called the
Franciscans after its founder St, Francis of
Assisi.
