4. 1960: The Beatles, consisting initially of a five-piece
lineup of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe
and Peter Best, become a band after a three-year period.
1961: Sutcliffe leaves the band.
1962: Starr joins the band, replacing Sutcliffe. The
Beatles rise to popularity in the UK after first single “Love
Me Do” becomes a big hit.
1963: The era known as Beatlemania kicks off in Britain.

1964: The Beatles become international stars and tour
the United States during the British Invasion. Release of

Lennon was shot and killed near his home in New York on
Monday 8 December 1980.
Harrison died of cancer in Los Angeles on Thursday 29
November 2001.
McCartney and Starr remain active today; both regularly perform
concerts.
The Beatles are the best-selling band in history; their music is still
popular even more than four decades after their split.
They were jointly included in Time magazine’s compilation of the
20th century’s 100 most influential people.
