15. Stepwise Fishery Improvement
Artesmar® addresses the specific challenges of
small-scale fisheries and offers a functional
framework for stepwise fishery improvement.
16. Stepwise Fishery Improvement
Step 1: Outreach & Eligibility
Artesmar® reaches out to fisheries and seafood
businesses and identifies suitable candidate
fisheries for engagement.
Fisheries that meet the criteria of eligibility can
enter the program and undergo a stepwise
process of improvement.
The approval of eligibility to enter the program is
subject to independent auditing.
17. Stepwise Fishery Improvement
Step 2: Supply Chain Integrity
& Market Access
Artesmar® creates direct market access once a
fishery is entering the improvement program.
For doing so, the first step is the implementation
of traceability and chain of custody, in order to
guarantee to market partners the required
product and supply chain integrity.
The Artesmar® criteria for traceability and chain
of custody are subject to independent auditing.

Step 3: Fishery Improvement
Artesmar works with a set of transparent criteria that
offer guidance for fishery improvement:
• Technical Criteria for Fisheries
• Socioeconomic and Social Criteria
Based on assessments of candidate fisheries, fishery-
specific improvement plans are developed and
implemented.
The process of improvement is subject to regular
monitoring and public reporting.
Final achievement of Artesmar® criteria of improvement
is subject to independent auditing.
