M4D is working with Government & Communities in
Jigawa State to Improve Local Governance
LOCAL GOVERNANCE MATTERS RESULTS IN JIGAWA SO FAR
State and Local Government, CBOs and
Communitymembershaveallplayedtheirpart.
Planning: M4D is supporting the state to improve
its budgetary processes so as to support improved
service delivery. M4D’s support to 139 policy
makers and service providers in Jigawa has
strengthened their capacity for better service
delivery and accountability in Health, Education,
Agriculture,Water&Sanitationsectors.
Accountability: Innovations like Participatory
CommunityServiceManagementSystem(PCSMS)
brought into the water & sanitation sector has
made it easy for communities in Malam Madori
LGA to channel their complaints for improved
water & sanitation services and has in turn enabled
service providers to respond promptly, leading to
increasedsatisfactionwithservicedelivery.
Service Delivery: Innovation in water & sanitation
has enabled the construction of public-private
toilets in Malam Madori LGA as a solution to open
defecationinpublic.
Inclusion:Providinggirlswithrelevantlifeskillshas
enhancedtheirconfidence.M4D’slifeskillsclubsin
Jigawa has enabled girls to identify and articulate
their demands to parents and decision makers,
bringing about inclusive governance. Providing
People with Disabilities with livelihoods could
potentially reduce street begging. M4D is
supporting this initiative in its 3 focal LGAs in
Jigawa.

whose needs remain unmet as a result), and people with disabilities, who are

Mobilising for Development (M4D) believes that by working together, policy

and livelihoods. By collaborating with Community Based Organisations (CBOs),
policy makers and service providers, M4D makes this goal a reality through the
introduction of innovative approaches that help ensure communities and
marginalised groups have access to improved services and livelihoods that
contributetoimprovingcitizens’overallqualityoflife.

CBOs serve as our entry points into communities. Our work with CBOs in Malam
Madori, Ringim and Miga LGAs has led to the identification of a number of priority
needs in service delivery by communities. The response by service providers to
their identified needs has brought about positive engagement with communities.
Continued engagement like this will bring about improved understanding of local
government interventions, leading to better outcomes for all stakeholders. CBOs
also provide representation to marginalized groups like girls and people with
disabilities. CBOs working with girls have provided them with platforms to reach
decision makers. Three CBOs are also working with People with Disability to
identify their priority needs, and provide them with livelihoods that will protect
theirdignityandtakethemawayfromstreetbegging.
