Choking occurs when something blocks the flow of air into the lungs, preventing breathing. If someone is choking, remain calm and ask if they can speak or breathe. If not, call for help and perform abdominal thrusts by standing behind them and thrusting inward and upward into their abdomen until the object is dislodged or they can breathe on their own. If they become unconscious, tilt their head back, lift the chin, and give two breaths before checking breathing and continuing abdominal thrusts or a finger sweep if still blocked.
