This document summarizes a study on community-based breeding programs for indigenous sheep breeds in Ethiopia. The study was conducted in four regions with different agro-ecologies and involved four sheep breeds. Baseline data was collected on flock sizes and traits like weight were recorded. Young rams were selected based on performance records and physical traits. Preliminary results show average weights varied by breed and growth rates are improving over time. Challenges include low literacy, pastoral mobility, and lack of infrastructure. Future plans include expanding the programs and further evaluating their socio-economic impacts.
