Update on systems analysis and targeting component 3.1
1. Update on systems analysis and
targeting component 3.1
Mario Herrero (ILRI)
CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish
Planning Meeting
ILRI Nairobi
27 September 2011
2. Aims
1. Generate data that will improve targeting and implementation of Value
Chain research and interventions
2. Provide basis for priority setting for selection of next generation Value
Chains, including spill-over outcomes
3. Support environmental impact assessment
4. Support standardisation of productivity indicators for key CRP species
5. For key CRP species, develop animal-farm-household models for ex
ante evaluation of interventions
3. Plans (tentative)
1. Systems analysis and Targeting report for EACH Value Chain
1. Physical areas covered by the value chains
2. Current infrastructure supporting the VC (roads, towns, markets, etc), possibly
development domains
3. Current climate + foreseen change Cs in the regions under study
4. Human population, maybe with an insight into numbers of producers, poverty
rates
5. Production systems contributing to production in the VC
6. Numbers of animals system, by breed category where feasible
7. Productivity per animal by system (modelled + initial information on yield gaps)
8. Feed resources (grasses, stovers, occasional feeds, grain consumption)
9. Water productivity of different animal products
10. Greenhouse gas emissions (methane, N Oxide and CO2 – totals and per unit of
product)
