Whether your company is considering Azure, Amazon Web Services, the Google Cloud, or any of the other providers, you will need a cloud strategy. However, with the cloud comes a different way of thinking. The good news is, you have a lot of options. The reality is, migrating to the cloud is not as simple as creating servers in the service and charging forward. Join IDERA and Mike Fal as he discusses the different options for cloud migration, that include Platform-as-a-Service, hybrid cloud footprints, disaster recovery, and many other facets of using the cloud. - Many companies start using the cloud without a plan Easy to create resources in cloud providers, to it’s easy to lose control It’s just important to plan for cloud deployments as any other project

- A Virtual Data Center Cloud provider gives you: Virtual Machines Network Resources (virtual switches, firewalls) Storage (different perf levels) Backend support (patching, server level backups, failover support) You are responsible for Designing and building the infrastructure
- It’s the most familiar approach. All the building blocks are things we’re used to with a few enhancements. Because we have access to all the pieces and parts, it gives us the most control (and most comfort) Combine all this, it makes this the easiest to move applications to. We already understand the pieces, we just need to put them together.
- Prebuilt applications you can use. Like choosing a car. You can pick make, model, color, and some features, but are limited. Do you want a sports car? Maybe a minivan? Choose car based on need.
- Less overhead, because many of the management tasks are built in (backups, performance, etc) Because of less overhead, it’s extremely simple to spin up a service and start using it This can be the fastest move, though moving legacy apps could require some re-engineering to move. Definitely fastest for new applications.
- Cloud affords us a lot of flexibility Because of this, we can’t think about it the same way as traditional infra.
- Many tools to integrate on-premises with the cloud AD integration VPN connectivity Biggest hurdle is bandwidth (you’re using the internet)
- Still a need for Disaster Recovery in the cloud, you never know what can happen. Amazon S3, logical corruption, corrupted machines Providers have great infrastructure, but can’t cover everything.
