This document provides an overview and agenda for a presentation on reference management systems using Mendeley. It discusses what reference management systems are, the benefits of Mendeley, how to set up a Mendeley library by adding documents and managing references, citing sources in papers, and additional features of Mendeley including its social networking capabilities. The presentation includes both discussion and hands-on activities for using Mendeley.

4. Open Access, briefly
• Open Access is the free,
immediate, online
availability of research
articles, coupled with the
rights to use these
articles fully in the digital
environment - See more

• Ways authors can
provide open access:
• self-archiving their journal
articles in an open
access repository, also
known as 'green' open
access, or
• publishing in an open
access journal, known as
'gold' open access
• *Hybrid Open access

7. Ponder this!
• Every morning in Africa, a Zebra wakes up it knows
that it has to run faster than the fastest lion or it will be
killed
• Every morning a lion wakes up it knows that it has to
run faster than the slowest zebra or it will starve to
death
• In Africa, it doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a
Zebra; when the sun comes up you had better be
running!
9. Reference Management Software
• Reference management software are
electronic tools or programs that can help a
researcher carry out referencing (in-text
citations, footnotes or endnotes, and
reference lists/bibliographies)
• They are also automatic referencing tools
that help researchers control their information
sources by grouping and managing the
research materials used in their research
projects.
10. Purpose of Reference
Management Software
• To automatically import
references/citations from variety of
sources;
• To organize these references/citations
and create personal online database for
the researcher;
• To automatically generate both in-text
citation and reference lists/bibliographies
in any style chosen by the researcher
11. Benefits of Reference
Management Systems
• They save a lot of time.
• They minimise tendency for mistakes
made when typing up your reference list.
• They are platforms for archiving your
citations.
• They reduce drudgery associated with
understanding diverse citation styles and
collating reference lists in numerous
styles.
