D EFINITION OF V OC ATIONAL E DUCATION
Vocational education and training is that education, which helps a person to build his
skill–set, and make him employable. The skill can be of any trade, which can make the
trainee expert in the trade.
Vocational education and training does not require any formal school education. The
trainings can be provided either through classrooms, or full–time apprenticeship, or a
mix of classroom training and internship.
R ESEARCH METHOD OLOGY
Market size is being defined as the total number of people that undergo vocational
training and education in India. These include:
• School students taking vocational education and training in open schools.
• Students that have joined courses in government–run polytechnics, industrial
training institutes (ITIs), and other vocational education colleges.

E XECUTIVE S UMMARY
With more than 3 million people in India undergoing vocational education and training
at present, the government has a set an objective to provide training to approximately
500 million people by 2022. The target is supervised by National Policy on Skills
Development (NPSD) —a Prime Minister’s initiative — which has assigned
responsibilities to Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ministry of Labor
(MoLE) and various ministries and departments — to provide adequate skills training to
people. While MoLE takes care of vocational education and training of workers at the
industry level, MHRD imparts it to students in schools and colleges.
A lot of private players in education sector are also actively participating in vocational
education and training. They are providing skill–development courses, which make
people employable. These players are either working independently, or have joined
hands with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to provide vocational
education and training under public–private–partnership. Number of private players in
the segment is expected to increase, once the National Vocational Education
Qualification Framework (NVEQF) — a framework by MHRD and All India Council for
Technical Education (AICTE), will be fully implemented. The framework is designed to
start vocational education and training from class IX in schools, and is expected to
increase PPP opportunities for private players.
