Antoine Patton believes we need people who are experiencing life-altering problems (health, poverty, etc.) to help solve problems. There needs to be a conscious effort to provide them with the tools and education needed to solve their own problems. Patton discusses how he is leveraging his unique experiences to help solve the problems of people with similar experiences. Filmed at qconsf.com.
Antoine Patton was incarcerated at age 20 for 8 years. While in prison, he learned to code and taught his daughter after his release. They collaborated to build an app that allows families to freely send photos to their incarcerated loved ones - Photo Patch. He launched Unlock Academy, an online learning platform, and vowed to teach 2020 Black and Brown people to code by the year 2020.

7. OPPORTUNITY
& Access
The Inclusion problem is smaller
compared to the access problem. It’s
not like tech companies have access
to a huge pool of thousands of under
represented coders looking for a job.
And POC don't have the most access
to what it takes to become
successful in Tech
Is Inclusion the
Big Problem?
8. EDUCATION
EMPOWERMENT
Most people of color aren’t worried
about inclusion, they are stressing
about education cost, about not
having technical equipment, about
not having the free time to actually
commit to studying.
THE BIGGER
PROBLEMS
10. IMPEDIMENTS IN THE USER STORY
COST OF
EDUCATION
The cost of college
tuition or bootcamps
are too expensive for
many people of color.
ACCESS TO
COMPUTERS
Over 40% of
households don't have
computer or laptop
devices.
DEDICATED STUDY
TIME
Many marginalized
people don't have the
leisure to spend time on
non-compensated
activities.

The Takeaway
16. TIME EQUIPMENT EDUCATION
How do we
scale this?
If we could scale the number of POC in code,
we can increase the diversity numbers.
17. TECHONOMIC JUSTICE
GOAL
If we had unlimited resources what would be a practical
solution to educating and empowering more people of
color who do have an interest in tech?
