2. BURDEN OF CANCER
• In 2014, 3,024 new cancer cases were reported
Vs 2,037 in 2010 (Uganda Cancer Registry, 2015).
• From 2000 to 2012, 17,813 new cancer cases and
a total of 353000 cancer deaths occurred in
Uganda (74 cancer deaths per day). This is far
more than maternal mortality and related deaths
of 16 women per day (WHO, 2014).
• Commonest cancers in Uganda are; Cervical and
breast cancers among women and prostate, liver,
lung, Kaposi's sarcoma, penile, urinary bladder,
and oesophageal cancers in men (Parkin DM, Sitas
F et al, 2008).

cancer?
Breast cancer is
uncontrolled
growth of breast
cells.
5. PREVALENCE OF BREAST CANCER
• Breast cancer accounts for 12.5% of all
cancer deaths among women in Uganda
• 2,420 new cases were reported in 2014
• Over 80% of all breast cancer cases
present in advanced stages
• Only 46% of women with breast cancer
survive
• Breast cancer can be cured if detected
early
6. WHY IS BREAST CANCER ON THE RISE?
• More women are living longer that
before
• Puberty & breast dev’t are starting
earlier than before
• More women are delaying & not
having full term pregnancy
• Fewer women breast feed & more
women b/feed for <2 years
7. RISK FACTORS……
• More adolescents & women take
hormones-contraceptive pill; start earlier
& stay on longer
• More women & girls are over weight
• More women & girls are physically
inactive
• More women & girls consume alcohol
• More women smoke
• More women are stressed & sleep
deprived
• More women have low levels of Vit. D
8. SIGNS & SYMPROMS OF BREAST
CANCER
NB. Initially no signs & symptoms. This why
regular screening can save lives.
• Breast lump-may be too small to see of
feel
• A painless hard, lump with rough edges
• Breast swelling / pain /redness
• Nipple turning inwards (Retracted)
• Breast skin dimpling
• Blood discharge from the nipple
• Lump in the under arm
14. What Uganda Cancer Fund is
doing
• Supporting mass public education about cancer
through local news papers, tv, radios, and other
social media
• Supporting training of h/workers in cancer screening
• Patient Hostels-In advanced stage of opening up 50
bed N&B House of Hope in memory of late
Nankabirwa and Bbale
• Supporting Mobile cancer screening in Western
Uganda
• Have established ‘’Cancer Drugs Fund’’ to provide
cancer drugs to children and the most vulnerable
• Mobilizing resources from local and foreign donors
for cancer prevention and care
15. What needs to done
• Integrating cancer awareness and screening into
daily health care delivery packages at all levels
• Training health personnel at all healthcare
delivery levels in cancer advocacy and screening
• Opening up and fully equipping 4 Regional
Cancer Treatment Centers
• Building capacity of UCI as a center of excellence
in cancer care in the EAC
• Increasing budgetary allocation for cancer drugs
• Opening up cancer patient hostels
• Investing in cancer research
