Configuration Details:
SPLUNK*: The workload consists of simulating a number of concurrent users submitting search queries against Splunk* server. The search queries can be
dialed between "rare-term" search and "dense" search depending on the number of matching documents. "rare-term" search is an I/O intensive workload,
while "dense" search is CPU intensive.
Baseline configuration: Splunk 6.0 (build 182037) on CentOS* 6.3, 2 Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2, 2.7GHz, 12 cores, 64GB DDR3/1333, regular DIMM,
Intel® SSD DC P3700, Source is Intel internal as of June 17, 2014.
New configuration: Splunk 6.0 (build 182037) on CentOS* 6.3, 2 Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v3, 2.6GHz, 14 cores, 64GB DDR4/2133, regular DIMM,
Intel® SSD DC P3700, Source is Intel internal as of June 17, 2014.
SAS*: The SAS* mixed analytic workload represents the type of SAS processing that roughly 60% of SAS customers do today. This workload created a
multi-user benchmarking scenarios to simulate the workload of a typical Foundation SAS or Base SAS / STAT customer. The goal of these scenarios is to
evaluate the multi-user performance of SAS on various platforms. Various sized mixed analytic workloads were created to simulate many users utilizing
CPU, RAM and I/O resources which SAS programs heavily utilize during typical program execution. The test was designed to mimic this workload and be
scaled to represent different sized customer environments. In this specific case, 60 sessions (228 jobs) of computational (COMP) workload are used to
measure the performance for platform comparison between E5 2699 V3 and E5 2697 V2. And 60 sessions (204 jobs) of mixed IO and CPU intensive
(MIXED) workload are used to measure the performance for IO comparison between P3700 SSD and S3700 SSD.
Baseline configuration: SAS* 9.4 on Red Hat* Enterprise Linux 6.5, 2 Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2697 v2, 2.7GHz, 12 cores, 64GB DDR3/1600, regular DIMM,

AYASDI*: This analytic benchmark emulates the behavior of our appliance under load. This is a modified version of the standard benchmark, which our QA
team uses to validate new releases. The benchmark was scaled down to accommodate the small size of the test cluster size and limited memory resources.
We use a load generator on a separate client machine to emulate a configurable number of users, each of which performs a variety of different analyses on a
variety of datasets. Performance is measured in terms of 1) the end-to-end latency of the analyses (i.e. the time from a when a user clicks go until the result
is returned to the client), and 2) the overall throughout of analyses that can be supported by the cluster, with acceptable latency.

SAS*: The SAS* mixed analytic workload represents the type of SAS processing that roughly 60% of SAS customers do today. This workload created a multi-user benchmarking scenarios to simulate the workload of a typical Foundation SAS or Base SAS / STAT customer. The goal of these scenarios is to evaluate the multi-user performance of SAS on various platforms. Various sized mixed analytic workloads were created to simulate many users utilizing CPU, RAM and I/O resources which SAS programs heavily utilize during typical program execution. The test was designed to mimic this workload and be scaled to represent different sized customer environments. In this specific case, 60 sessions (228 jobs) of computational (COMP) workload are used to measure the performance for platform comparison between E5 2699 V3 and E5 2697 V2. And 60 sessions (204 jobs) of mixed IO and CPU intensive (MIXED) workload are used to measure the performance for IO comparison between P3700 SSD and S3700 SSD. AYASDI*: This analytic benchmark emulates the behavior of our appliance under load. This is a modified version of the standard benchmark, which our QA team uses to validate new releases. The benchmark was scaled down to accommodate the small size of the test cluster size and limited memory resources. We use a load generator on a separate client machine to emulate a configurable number of users, each of which performs a variety of different analyses on a variety of datasets. Performance is measured in terms of 1) the end-to-end latency of the analyses (i.e. the time from a when a user clicks go until the result is returned to the client), and 2) the overall throughout of analyses that can be supported by the cluster, with acceptable latency. 1. Key Message: Organizations today are challenged to find the right balance between cutting costs and deploying modern IT infrastructure to support ever-evolving market demands.
  2. Key Message: Net-Net: 32% of the world’s servers only contribute 4% of the total performance but use 65% of the total power. These servers are greater than 4 years old
  3. Key Message: Modernizing the IT infrastructure is a process. Here is a diagram showing an application modernization methodology, and the key phases and considerations. This is an ongoing cycle that should be completed every 2 to 4 years.
  4. Key Message: Start by updating your IT infrastructure to minimize operating expenses and maximize efficiency, taking advantage of new capabilities in hardware and software. Additional Detail: Extraordinary demands require extraordinary innovation Intel is actively working with the industry to come up with creative and innovative solutions to meet this insatiable demand for compute in high performance computing Intel is investing in three key areas… New CPU architectures, New Software & Tools, and Fabrics… …for a balanced platform approach… designed to keep up with the aggressive pursuit of computational capability
  5. Key Message: Organizations that utilize IT as a strategic enabler for operational excellence and differentiated services have a distinct competitive advantage.
  6. Key Message: There is a clear path to IT leadership: It starts with getting your IT environment in order and reducing costs while maximizing performance, security, and compliance. Delivering a cloud infrastructure compounds costs savings, while enabling a flexible, service-based IT model. From there, you can create new business opportunities and embrace new workloads like big data. Additional Detail: What is your balance in these three buckets? Do you think of your IT in these 3 buckets? How do you free up $$ from operating expenses to focus on modernized service delivery and new business opportunities?
  7. Key Message: To achieve insights from big data, you need the compute, network, and storage resources required to process large amounts of data. Additional Information: The process of manipulating data has some common attributes. It’s likely that you are gathering your data from edge devices, the cloud, or other information sources. Once the data is in your environment, there are three major components of data management. You will need compute resources to analyze and transform data. Inside the box, this takes the form of data analytics, In-Memory DB, or standard data processing. Outside the box, the data warehouse is transforming the modern enterprise data center. Compute is clearly the major component of analytics for insight, but there are more needs. A solid network is necessary to move the data to the analytics engine. In some cases, networks and datacenter topologies actually move the analytics engines closer to the data, which reverses the normal trend. Having a good network is key to getting the most out of your data. Finally, there’s a necessity to store or persist your data in a format that enables you to quickly gain insight. The structure of your data store along with the nearness of the analytics engines make all the difference in garnering information in minutes versus hours. Intel is a leading supplier of silicon and systems. Additionally, we are growing our software competencies in Big Data. We can be a trusted advisor to you as you begin to scope your Big Data and analytics deployments.
