Technology partners SITA and NEC have come together to deliver the future
of digital identity at airports - the result being a secure walk-through travel
experience. The no-wait, no-touch automated verification supports quick and
hygenic self-service and passenger processing as travel demand increases.
Using the NEC I:Delight identity management platform, SITA Smart Path validates
passenger identity and credentials for paperless check-in, bag drop, security,
immigration and boarding. A traveler’s Digital ID is verified with live-capture
biometrics rather than in-person contact with airport or airline personnel.
SITA Smart Path Mobile places enrollment in a passenger’s hand. Users can use
their smartphones to create a Digital ID, which includes authenticating their identity
and scanned biometric passport. SITA Smart Path Mobile SDK enables airlines and
airports to integrate the mobile enrollment option into their own branded app.
Touchless technology has been particularly helpful during the pandemic, and
NEC biometrics accurately recognize faces with a mask in place. Passenger
self-service for routine tasks frees personnel to focus on more meaningful
traveler needs, increasing customer satisfaction and security.

With SITA Smart Path Mobile powered by NEC, passengers can enroll from home with their smartphone
and even check in for flights before heading to the airport. The passenger convenience also reduces airport
hardware requirements and implementation time.
At the airport, passengers continue through checkpoint kiosks using face biometrics – with a face mask
where required. They avoid lines, touching hardware and person-to-person contact wherever Digital ID
is enabled, including:

When there is a connecting flight at another Smart Path-enabled airport, the user can enable consent for
streamlined services there, as well. Digital ID consent can be renewed for the return journey.
Passengers who opt in for a secure, encrypted Digital ID maintain privacy and control of their Personally
Identifiable Information (PII). They decide how, when and where their Digital ID will be used and can disable
it or opt out at any time, choosing instead to follow traditional manual processes.
Each automated experience saves time, stress, and fumbling for documents. Passengers who use SITA Smart
Path powered by NEC have more time to enjoy each unique airport’s atmosphere and amenities. The system
has been widely adopted and well-rated by users.
Participants’ Digital ID journey begins by logging into an airport’s or airline’s app with a smartphone. Clicking
the Smart Path enrollment link begins secure biometric identification, liveness check and document valida-
tion through the trusted NEC digital platform.
