2. Who is Malala?
Malala is an 18 years old pakistani girl who is now living
in Birmingham, England. Malala was born on 12 July
1997 in Mingora, Swat Valley, a town in the north-west of
Pakistan. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai named her
Malala after Malalai, a Pashtun heroine.
3. Why is Malala famous?
Malala is famous becuse of her courage to
make girls in Swat Valley educated under the
Taliban's rule. Her fight against the Taliban
leaded her to her fame after when the Taliban
gunmen shot her. She says,“I don't mind if I
have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is
education. And I am afraid of no one.”
4. Malala Yousafzai's Background
Malala wasn't rich until her fame, she was just a normal school girl but the
one of the most talented in her school. Malala started living in Birmingham
after Pakistan in 2012 with her mother, Toor Pekai Yousafzai, her father,
Ziauddin Yousafzai and her two younger brothers, Khushal (14 years) and
Atal (9 years).
Ziauddin, who has always loved learning, ran a school in Swat District
named “Khushal Public School” for girls. He is known as an advocate for
education in Pakistan and an outspoken opponent of Taliban efforts to
restrict education and stop girls from going to school.
5. Becoming an Education
Activist
Malala shared her father’s passion for learning and love of going to school.
In 2009, at the age of 12, as the Taliban’s military hold on Swat intensified,
Malala began writing a blog for the BBC Urdu service under a pseudonym
named “Gul Makai”, about the life she and others had under the Taliban
rule. Ziauddin's school had to shut down because that school was for girls.
Under that time Malala gave a speech on “How dare Taliban take my basic
rights to education.” The time Malala continued to speak against the
Taliban, she and her father received death threats but even though they
continued to speak out for the right to education. Around this time, Malala
was featured in a documentary made for The New York Times and was
revealed as the author of the BBC blog.
6. National Youth peace Price
Award
In 2011, at the age of 14, she received Pakistan's first National
Youth Peace Prize and was nominated by Archbishop Desmond
Tutu for the International Children's Peace Prize. In response to
her rising popularity and national recognition, Taliban leaders
voted to kill her.
7. Who are Taliban?
Taliban is a group of terrorists who kill and destroy homes of innocent
people. They even force young girls to be married as quick as they
can. They have made strict rules for the girls(10 years+) that they
must not be educated, talk to a male until or unless he relates the
women or is married to her, do makeup, work outside and travel
anywhere without a male relative, they are also strictly said that they
must wear “burqa.” They have control on 90% of Afghanistan and the
northwest of Pakistan.
8. Attack on Malala
On 9 October 2012, as Malala and her friends were travelling home from school on a school
bus, a masked gunman entered their school bus and shouted "Which one of you is Malala?
Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all",and, on her being identified, the gunmen shot her.
She was shot with a single bullet which went through her head, neck and shoulder. She was
quickly taken to the hospital of Peshawar from Swat Valley.
Malala survived the initial attack, but was in a critical condition. So she was moved to
Birmingham in the United Kingdom for treatment at the hospital that specialises in military
injuries. She was not discharged until January, 2013 by which time she had been joined by
her family in the UK. The time she cured from all injuries she began living in Birmingham
with her family because Taliban wouldn't leave her alive in Pakistan if she moves back.
“The Taliban's attempt to kill Malala” received worldwide condemnation and led to protests
across Pakistan. In the weeks after the attack, over 2 million people signed a right to
education petition, and the National Assembly swiftly ratified Pakistan's first Right to Free
and Compulsory Education Bill.
9. Establishing the Malala Fund
and writing a book
Malala became a global advocate for the millions of girls being denied a
formal education. In 2013, Malala and Ziauddin co-founded the Malala
Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls'
education and to empower girls to raise their voices, to unlock their
potential and to demand change.
Malala wrote a biography on her so that everyone in the world could
know that which type of life she was living under. The book name was “I
am Malala” and was published worldwide on October 8th, 2013.
10. Nobel Peace Price Award
After all Malala did for children to be educated she at last
deserved to earn the Nobel Peace Prize Award.On 10th
December, 2014 Malala was given the Nobel Peace Prize with
Indian children's rights and education advocate Kailash
Satyarthi. Malala contributed her $1.1 million prize money for
financing the creation of secondary schools for girls in Pakistan.
