My name is Dennis Hungridge, VP for Human Resources and Project Manager for the creation of an HR strategy and structure at California University of Management and Technology.
As you can see from our purpose statement, it is our intent as a project team to bring into existence a new structure for a new kind of university. Applying Project management practice to the HR function presents interesting challenges and opportunities. The interactive and sometimes volatile nature of human interaction makes planning and executing a project, as one person described it, “One continuous mistake!”. That is, a process of continuous revision a la Agile project management.
The most interesting challenge in this process will be to match best-practice with the current state of affairs in the HR world. Changes such as the Ledbetter Act for equal pay, and the newly adopted health care legislation will require that our processes remain flexible enough to adapt, while providing the structure needed to engage and retain the quality staff and faculty we need.
Here again, the deliverables will need to be flexible and adaptable. The online handbook will provide the employees the flexibility of reviewing as needed and will provide Calmat with a platform for just-in-time additions, deletions, and changes as the environment dictates.
Critical in our process are the stakeholders. We will work closely with Dr. Tal and the legal team to ensure the accuracy and compliance of our policies and procedures. Through it all, we are focused on bringing value to the employees.
The HR team brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this project. Catherine and Josh have done a tremendous job of setting the initial procedures in place, while Deepti brings deep experience from her working professional life in HR around the world.
The WBS and following schedule sample provide a glimpse into the work needed to complete the project.
Using tools such as Merlin and/or MS project , we can both learn more about the technology of project management and keep the project on time and under budget.
Most of these costs are imputed not additional to the organization. Actual cash outlay will be minimal.
Our goals, stated here, are to provide the greatest flexibility to the employee, while protecting the organization.
