#MyBUTTERFLYEFFECT
The Butterfly Effect is a concept invented by the American meteorologist Edward N. Lorenz (1917-
2008) to highlight the possibility that small causes may have momentous effects. Lorenz
subsequently dubbed his discovery "the butterfly effect": the nonlinear equations that govern the
weather have such an incredible sensitivity to initial conditions, that a butterfly flapping its wings in
Brazil could set off a tornado in Texas. Initially enunciated in connection with the problematics of
weather prediction, it became eventually a metaphor used in very diverse contexts, many of
them outside the strict realm of science - an idea that is more commonly used in Chaos Theory. A
small change can make much bigger changes happen, one small incident can have a big
impact on the future.

9. WHATIS
WorldExpo
• A World Expo is a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing
challenges of our time by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and
immersive activities.
• World Expos welcome tens of millions of visitors, allow countries to build extraordinary pavilions
and will transform the host city for years to come.
• The first World Expo – the Great Exhibition – took place in London in 1851. The concept
became popular and was repeated across the globe.
• Since the Bureau International des Exposition (BIE), headquartered in Paris, was created in
1928 to regulate and oversee these mega-events, World Expos have explicitly been organised
around a theme that attempts to improve humankind’s knowledge, takes into account
human and social aspirations and highlights scientific, technological, economic and social
progress.
• In the modern era, World Expos are unrivalled among international events in their size, scale,
duration and visitor numbers. They are large-scale platforms for education and progress that
serve as a bridge between governments, companies, international organisations, and citizens.
• BIE member countries will bid to host the world expo with a proposed theme that centres on a
current universal challenge.
• It is held every five years for a duration of between 3 months and 6 months.
10. WHATIS
WorldExpo
• Participants may build their own pavilions or rent a dedicated space. Official Participants to
the World Expo are Countries and International Organisations and Non-Official Participants
are Cities, Regions, Companies, Civil Society and NGOs.
• Besides the world expo, the BIE also oversees other smaller expos which are: the Specialised
Expo, Horticultural Expo and Triennale de Milano.
• Specialised Expos, officially known as ‘International Recognised Exhibitions’, are global events
designed to respond to a precise challenge facing humanity. They also welcome millions of
visitors and offer a journey through the chosen theme through engaging and immersive
activities.
• Article 4 of the 1928 Paris Convention states that Specialised Expos “illustrate a definite theme”
and that the event is limited in duration (maximum three months) and space (up to 25
hectares). The exhibition site is entirely built by the Organiser, participants being provided with
pavilion space, which they may customise, inside and outside, according to their own
interpretation of the Expo theme.
• The last specialised expo was held in Astana (now Nur Sultan), Kazakhstan (Expo 2017 Astana)
themed “Future Energy” while the next one will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina
between 15 January and 15 April 2023 under the theme “Science, Innovation, Art and
Creativity for Human Development. Creative industries in Digital Convergence”.
11. Expo 2020 Dubai was supposed to be
held from Oct 20, 2020 to March 10 April
2021. However, the Covid-19 global
pandemic forced the organiser to
propose a postponement.
The BIE held a remote voting process
that ended on May 29, 2020. Majority
members voted to postpone Expo 2020
to the new date and to retain the event
name.
Expo 2020 will commence from 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022 at
the 4.38 sq km expo site in Dubai South district.
• OPPORTUNITY:
Linking opportunities to global populations either individuals or
communities in meeting their future aspirations
• MOBILITY:
Creating a stream of productive and efficient logistics, ideas and
resources in line with digital development
• SUSTAINABILITY
Emphasising the balance of biodiversity, ecosystem and sustainable
development and expanding opportunities with existing capacity (doing
more with less).

15. THEME&CONCEPT
MalaysiaPavilionExpo2020Dubai
• Malaysia Pavilion’s theme “Energising Sustainability” captures its commitment to balance socio-economic progress with
environmental concerns to ensure a secure and sustainable future.
• The Pavilion aims to inspire visitors through an immersive experience of Malaysian hospitality, the biodiversity of the rainforest
and the country’s efforts at long-term sustainability across various industries.
• The Pavilion has four (4) dedicated zones:
1. ENERGISING TODAY – Sustainable development is best shown through how Malaysia is playing a leading role in
conserving its rainforests as the lung of the planet. The importance of the rainforests has never been greater than at
present with the challenge of climate change and Malaysia recognise very early on, the need to protect the ancient
biosphere for humankind. Since Malaysia made a bold pledge to maintain at least 50% of its land mass as forest cover at
the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, Malaysia still holds to this bold pledge. The efforts made to honour this voluntary
commitment are illustrated in the mindful approach to landuse management, balancing forest conservation and
development of the agricommodities sector, as showcased in this segment.
2. ENERGISING TOMORROW - Malaysia has made significant progress towards the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development. Through its climate action strategy, it is establishing low carbon cities, increasing renewable energy
generation, promoting energy efficiency projects, and eliminating single-use plastics, among other measures. Science,
Technology and Innovation are at the core of the country’s economic and societal development as the nation move
towards achieving developed nation status.
3. ENERGISING BUSINESS - The Malaysia Business Centre is where the private sector, state enterprises and government
promote sustainable economic development across key industries. A centre for trade and business connectivity, it will be
the venue for 26 weeks of thematic trade and business programmes.
4. ENERGISING HARMONY - A display of Malaysia’s diverse cultures, traditions and ethnicities living in harmony, thus
16. THEME&CONCEPT
MalaysiaPavilionExpo2020Dubai
• The Pavilion is 1,234.5 sq meter in size.
• Designed by award-winning architecture firm Hijjas Architects +
Planners, the Pavilion features a Rainforest Canopy inspired by
the majestic rainforests of Malaysia, blending cultural elements
with nature and functionality into a futuristic building.
• The design portrays the symbiotic relationship between man and
nature. In ‘touching the ground lightly’ in terms of environmental
impact, it will incorporate futuristic energy-efficiency elements
including LED lightings, heli fans, natural lighting, solar rooftop,
self-shading, green landscaping with vertical gardens and water
harvesting features. The Pavilion is designed to reduce
greenhouse gases emission by achieving 20% energy savings with
eco-friendly architecture and construction design.
• The meranti wood, a forestry resource harvested under the world-
renowned Sustainable Forest Management practices adopted by
Malaysia over a quarter century ago, is used as building material
for the facade.
17. THEME&CONCEPT
MalaysiaPavilionExpo2020Dubai
• The Pavilion is split into two tiers: the floating exhibition spaces
above and the underground business centre below, allowing for
a spatial separation between these distinctive functions.
• The landscape concept opens into a forest narrative, with a bios
wale reed bed water pool creating a cooling effect, water
spring mimicking natural tropical scenery, with vertical gardens
camouflaging the white steel poles, water rills meandering
down, and sunken gardens bringing in natural light to the
understory deck.
18. QUICKFACTS
MalaysiaPavilionExpo2020Dubai
• Malaysia’s is the first Net Zero Carbon Pavilion initiative for Expo
2020.
• This is in keeping with our #MyButterflyEffect campaign to set an
example and inspire others to take climate actions. In ‘touching
the ground lightly’ at Expo 2020, the Malaysia Pavilion will ensure
our participation in the world expo does not worsen global
warming by offsetting the carbon emitted in the process of pavilion
construction, operations activities and dismantling of the pavilion.
• Carbon offset will be realised by absorbing an equivalent amount
of GHGs from the atmosphere through activities such as forest
management, tree planting and purchase of renewable Energy
Certificates.
19. It is estimated that 1,500 tonnes of carbon will be emitted
encompassing Malaysia pavilion construction, operations
and dismantlingactivities.These willbe offset through:
1. Forestry Conservation
2. Tree Planting Activities
3. Purchase of Renewable Energy

In keeping with making the pavilion Net-

#MyButterflyEffects
• The #MyButterflyEffect Brand Campaign is based on the premise
that a small action in one location can cause large effects in other
places.
• The #MyButterflyEffect Brand Campaign was initially launched for
Expo 2017 Astana, to create a Butterfly Effect of green growth ideas
emanating from Malaysia to Kazakhstan and reaching the world
through a social campaign. The #MyButterflyEffect Brand
Campaign for the Malaysian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai aims to
extend the journey to inspire a sustainable socio-economic and
environmental future for all.
• We want to take significant actions that promote green growth, that
would inspire others to also act or to create ripple effects. Even
though we are an emerging market it doesn’t mean Malaysia
cannot make a big difference. The world needs leadership
inspiration from nations big and small, emerging and developed.
We are; a rainforest advocate, leading renewable energy producer
and a nation delivering on our plan.
• The brand campaign ambassador is Tunku Dato’ Seri Zain Al-‘Abidin
ibni Tuanku Muhriz.
23. ENERGISING SUSTAINABILITY captures Malaysia’s commitment to
balance socio-economic progress with environmental concerns to
ensure a secure and sustainable future. The theme will be reflected
across the Malaysian Pavilion and through the six clusters:
