2. Music Video Genre’s
I will be researching two genre’s that I think will suit our media group.
This will help make the discussion into what genre and what artist we
want to look into further; this will be between Indie Rock and R&B.
3. Indie Rock
This is a genre of music that stems from Alternative Rock, it began in the 80’s in
the UK and USA. It is known for being quite low budget however more
importantly, how diverse this style of music. Indie Rock is known to have many
sub-genre’s; like ‘indie pop’. Typical instruments that you would her in this kind
of music is: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals.
Recently Indie Rock has become more well known and is heading into being
more mainstream because of the amount of interest around this genre of
music. It is usually associated with places like festivals because it can be quite
up beat and expressive. Mainly young people listen to Indie Rock artists and
there has been a big rise in adverts using Indie Rock music because it is very
‘happy’ music at times. This is due to some of the reasons it is becoming more
well known and mainstream.
4. Rhythm and Blues
This African American music was developed in the 1940’s; it was traditionally used
as a term that marketed urban American Artists but later evolved into a genre of
music. It is one of the most influential types of music because it helped shape
what we know to be ‘Rock and Roll’. Although the music is a combination of
electric blues, gospel and soul, it was around the 1920s used as a blanket term
when referring to soul and funk. By the 80s Rhythm and Blues and been shortened
to R&B. Some of the instruments that you might find in R&B music is: drums,
double bass, saxophone, horns, piano, organ, electric guitar, vocals and
background vocals.
This style of music has continued to be very popular in society and has evolved
over the years. It has quite a wide rang of people that enjoy the music but mainly
seems to target younger audience. This is because money and power is associated
with these artists and a lot of young people aspire to have lifestyles like them.
5. Conclusion
These two genre’s have very different takes on music and target two completely
different types of listeners. I think that when we make our music video we need to
be clear on what genre we are doing and reflect by carefully choosing: shot
types, costume, location etc.
If we were to choose between these two genre’s of music I would say that Indie
Rock would be easier to achieve. This is because it attracts a young audience, it is
continuously becoming more mainstream and is low budget which is more realistic
in terms of producing a successful music video.
