Jake Williams used various new media technologies in the research, planning, construction, and evaluation of his project. He used his iPhone to access online resources like YouTube and survey results on Facebook. He used Wordle to summarize survey results from Survey Monkey. Google was heavily used for research on the artist and music video genres. YouTube provided inspiration by allowing him to watch music videos from different artists. A high definition camera captured footage for the music video. Final Cut Express was used to edit the footage into the final product using various effects and multiple layers, improving on skills gained from a previous thriller film.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages ? - Part One

technologies in the construction
and research, planning and
evaluation stages ?

2. Research and Construction
IPhone – I used my iPhone to gain quick access to my blogger account,
YouTube and Google. My iPhone was important in being able to quickly
check the amount of responses I had for my surveys on Facebook.
3. Wordle – Wordle was used once I had gathered the results of my survey I created using
Survey Monkey. Was I analysed the results, I created a Wordle which summarised my
survey. The most common answered used were made larger than the others to
demonstrate the most common answers. This was created to enable me to quickly remind
myself of the key elements of my research.
4. Google – Google was used heavily in the research and planning stage. Its primary use was
to search for information on the artist, how digipak’s were in different music genre’s etc.
5. Youtube- Youtube was used to watch music videos. Youtube helped me gain an awareness
of how Music Video’s by artists in different genres looked. For our Music Video, we looked
at the likes of Coldplay, and also the artists previous videos. This helped me gain
inspiration and make my Music Video contain certain characteristics which were essential
for music videos in the Pop/Band genre.
6. Camera – The camera was vital for the construction for the Music Video. With the
thriller project, we only used a standard DV camera. While constructing the Music
Video, we used a HDV camera. This enabled us to capture a better, crisper quality
picture than what could have been captured using the standard cameras. The HDV
camera enabled us to have various light settings as the camera was able to detect
the change of light, without loosing quality.
7. Final Cut Express – Once I captured the footage on the HDV camera, I used Final Cut
Express to edit the footage to create the Music Video. This is a very complicated and
intelligent piece of software which required a vast amount of time to be able to
master the skills required to use the software. As a result of using the software for
my thriller , I gained the basic skills required to operate the software. With regards to
the Music Video, the range of my skills dramatically increased. The software enabled
me to use different effects, for example the 3D Simulating Cube Spin, to create a
revolving split screen effect.
8. With the thriller film, all the editing was completed on one layer
However with the Music Video, the editing was completed using lots of
different layers. This enabled us to interact between several pieces of footage,
and also to edit the footage in sync with the music to increase the accuracy of
the lip syncing.
