MEDIA EXPOSURE AND LANGUAGE
PROFICIENCY OF GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF
MALAMIG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL: BASIS
FOR
MEDIA-GUIDED LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

◆ General Objectives - This study aims to determine the relationship
between the media exposure and the level of language proficiency of
selected Grade 11 students of Malamig National High School.
◆ Specific Objectives
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the extent of Grade 11 students media exposure in
terms of:
1.1 online reading resources;
1.2 print materials;
1.3 videos and television; and
1.4 social media/networking sites?
2. What is the level of language proficiency of the students in terms of:
2.1 Vocabulary;
2.2 Grammar; and
2.3 Comprehension skills?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the Grade 11 students extent of media
exposure and language proficiency?
4. Based on the results of the study, what media-guided language development
program could be proposed to enhance the language proficiency of the Grade 11
students of Malamig National High School?

Research Design
• This research is a descriptive-correlational study.
• According to Aquino (1982) cited that descriptive research as a fact-
finding method with reflective thinking and data gathered is reported from
the point of view the objectives and the basic assumptions of the project
underway.
• The correlational method on the other hand, will be used to determine
the relationship between the media exposure and language proficiency
of the Grade 11 students in Malamig National High School.

Respondents of the Study
The main respondents of this study were the incoming enrolled Senior High School
students in Malamig National High School during the school year 2022-2023.
Population Sample and Sampling Technique
Total renumeration of the respondents will be utilized. No sampling was used.

Summary
•Extent of Senior High School students media exposure in terms of:
1.online reading resources - An overall mean of 2.95 showed a slight
extent of exposure in terms of online reading resources.
2.print materials - An overall mean of 3.25 indicated an average extent
of media exposure in terms of print materials.
3.videos and television – there is a high media exposure among
students with an overall mean of 3.53 in terms of videos and television.
4.social media/networking sites- An overall mean of 3.83 showed high
extent of media exposure in social media or networking sites.
•Level of language proficiency of the students in terms of:
1.Vocabulary- an overall mean of 2.62 shows that the students
proficiency in vocabulary is approaching proficiency.
2.Grammar - the students proficiency in grammar is developing as
evident by the an overall mean of 2.30
3.Comprehension skills - An overall mean of 2.46 indicates that the
students are still developing their comprehension skills in language
proficiency. This means that the students can read, talk and write but
with poor comprehension.
Is there a significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of
media exposure and language proficiency?
Results shows that in terms of media exposure in terms of online reading resources, and social
media/networking sites has a high correlation to the level of language proficiency of students in terms of
vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills. Whereas the print material has a low to moderate
relationship to the level of language proficiency. The videos and television exposure of students showed a
low relationship to the language proficiency level of students. Thus, the hypothesis is rejected. There is a
significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of media exposure and language
proficiency.
Based on the results of the study, what media-guided language development program
could be proposed to enhance the language proficiency of the Senior High School students of
Malamig National High School?
The proposed media-guided language development program consists of the strategies that are valuable
tools for utilizing media as well to enhance and improve students language proficiency level.

Conclusions
Based on the summary of findings, the following conclusions were drawn.
1. The students have a high media exposure in terms of print materials, videos and
television and social media/networking sites and a slight level of exposure in online
reading resources.
2. The level of language proficiency in terms of vocabulary is approaching proficiency but
developing in grammar and comprehension skills.
3. There is a significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of
media exposure and language proficiency.
4. A proposed media-guided development program may be used to improve the language
proficiency level among Senior high school students.

Recommendations
The following are the recommendations made by the researcher.
1. Schools and the Department of Education may consider programs and projects that supports the
need focuses on the media-guided development program for teachers that consider the teacher,
school, and different levels within the education system.
2. School districts and educator preparation programs should consider periodically administering
surveys of teachers’ knowledge and skills in language proficiency to ensure students are receiving
high-quality instruction.
3. The results of this research support the idea that the field of education must engage students in
development programs that encourages the use of media resources, provided with a practice that
enables them to engage students in critical thinking process.
4. Social networking sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance
academic instruction and proficiency of students.
5. This study highly suggests that monthly sessions like school learning action cells should be
conducted to develop assessment tools and report the progress and development of students in
language proficiency.
6. Future researchers, who may be interested in the same parameter of the study, may undertake
similar study utilizing other variables that are not included in the study like teaching styles and
preferences, job satisfaction, level of commitment and abstraction, social awareness, and other
related variable to the teacher preparedness and utilization of online learning.

  • 2. 2 ◆ General Objectives - This study aims to determine the relationship between the media exposure and the level of language proficiency of selected Grade 11 students of Malamig National High School. ◆ Specific Objectives Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the extent of Grade 11 students media exposure in terms of: 1.1 online reading resources; 1.2 print materials; 1.3 videos and television; and 1.4 social media/networking sites?
  • 3. 2. What is the level of language proficiency of the students in terms of: 2.1 Vocabulary; 2.2 Grammar; and 2.3 Comprehension skills? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the Grade 11 students extent of media exposure and language proficiency? 4. Based on the results of the study, what media-guided language development program could be proposed to enhance the language proficiency of the Grade 11 students of Malamig National High School? 3

  • 6. Research Design • This research is a descriptive-correlational study. • According to Aquino (1982) cited that descriptive research as a fact- finding method with reflective thinking and data gathered is reported from the point of view the objectives and the basic assumptions of the project underway. • The correlational method on the other hand, will be used to determine the relationship between the media exposure and language proficiency of the Grade 11 students in Malamig National High School.
  • 7. 7 Respondents of the Study The main respondents of this study were the incoming enrolled Senior High School students in Malamig National High School during the school year 2022-2023. Population Sample and Sampling Technique Total renumeration of the respondents will be utilized. No sampling was used.

Summary •Extent of Senior High School students media exposure in terms of: 1.online reading resources - An overall mean of 2.95 showed a slight extent of exposure in terms of online reading resources. 2.print materials - An overall mean of 3.25 indicated an average extent of media exposure in terms of print materials. 3.videos and television – there is a high media exposure among students with an overall mean of 3.53 in terms of videos and television. 4.social media/networking sites- An overall mean of 3.83 showed high extent of media exposure in social media or networking sites.
  • 17. •Level of language proficiency of the students in terms of: 1.Vocabulary- an overall mean of 2.62 shows that the students proficiency in vocabulary is approaching proficiency. 2.Grammar - the students proficiency in grammar is developing as evident by the an overall mean of 2.30 3.Comprehension skills - An overall mean of 2.46 indicates that the students are still developing their comprehension skills in language proficiency. This means that the students can read, talk and write but with poor comprehension.
  • 18. Is there a significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of media exposure and language proficiency? Results shows that in terms of media exposure in terms of online reading resources, and social media/networking sites has a high correlation to the level of language proficiency of students in terms of vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills. Whereas the print material has a low to moderate relationship to the level of language proficiency. The videos and television exposure of students showed a low relationship to the language proficiency level of students. Thus, the hypothesis is rejected. There is a significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of media exposure and language proficiency. Based on the results of the study, what media-guided language development program could be proposed to enhance the language proficiency of the Senior High School students of Malamig National High School? The proposed media-guided language development program consists of the strategies that are valuable tools for utilizing media as well to enhance and improve students language proficiency level.
  • 19. 19 Conclusions Based on the summary of findings, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. The students have a high media exposure in terms of print materials, videos and television and social media/networking sites and a slight level of exposure in online reading resources. 2. The level of language proficiency in terms of vocabulary is approaching proficiency but developing in grammar and comprehension skills. 3. There is a significant relationship between the Senior High School students extent of media exposure and language proficiency. 4. A proposed media-guided development program may be used to improve the language proficiency level among Senior high school students.
  • 20. 20 Recommendations The following are the recommendations made by the researcher. 1. Schools and the Department of Education may consider programs and projects that supports the need focuses on the media-guided development program for teachers that consider the teacher, school, and different levels within the education system. 2. School districts and educator preparation programs should consider periodically administering surveys of teachers’ knowledge and skills in language proficiency to ensure students are receiving high-quality instruction. 3. The results of this research support the idea that the field of education must engage students in development programs that encourages the use of media resources, provided with a practice that enables them to engage students in critical thinking process. 4. Social networking sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic instruction and proficiency of students. 5. This study highly suggests that monthly sessions like school learning action cells should be conducted to develop assessment tools and report the progress and development of students in language proficiency. 6. Future researchers, who may be interested in the same parameter of the study, may undertake similar study utilizing other variables that are not included in the study like teaching styles and preferences, job satisfaction, level of commitment and abstraction, social awareness, and other related variable to the teacher preparedness and utilization of online learning.
