2. • God knows our hearts and everything about us,
but often get so busy and so stressed that we
don’t take time listen to or look at our own
hearts. God knows us but sometimes it seems like
we don’t even know ourselves.
1 O LORD, you have searched me and known me!
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
–Psalm 139:1-2
HEART CHECK
3. • Our hearts are critical to everything we do in
life…
23Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life. – Proverbs 4:23
HEART CHECK
4. • …and yet they easily get off track.
9 The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it? –Jeremiah 17:9
HEART CHECK
5. • Even though he knows that God knows
everything about us, David prays this:
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. – Psalm
139:23-24
HEART CHECK
6. HEART CHECK
• David is asking God to search his heart not so
God can learn something new, but so God can
show David what’s in his heart.
• Let’s take some time and ask God to search
our hearts and show us if there is anything
that is getting in the way of our relationship
with God.
7. HEART CHECK
• Our Relationships with others –
– Do I need to forgive anyone?
– Do I need to apologize to anyone?
– Is there anything that doesn’t feel right in my
relationships with others?
8. HEART CHECK
• Our Relationship with God –
– Are there things in my life that I am making more
important than God? (Idols)
– Is there sin in my life I am not letting go of?
– Am I neglecting my relationship with God?
– Why?
– Have I surrendered my life to Christ is King?
9. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Growing in our relationship with God isn’t
something that will just happen by accident. It
involves wanting and seeking for God to work
in our lives.
10. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Let’s pray for God to humble our hearts as we draw near
to Him.
• 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture
says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made
to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it
says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the
humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and
he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners,
and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched
and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to
mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves
before the Lord, and he will exalt you. –James 4:5-10
11. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Let’s Look at Psalm 119 and see David’s Prayer for
God to bring him deeper in his walk with God.
• Let’s pray for God to help us grow in our love and
knowledge of His Word.
33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes;
and I will keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart. –Psalm 119:33-34
12. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Let’s Pray for God to help us live out His Word
35 Lead me in the path of your
commandments,
for I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to selfish gain! -Psalm 119:35-36
13. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Pray for God to turn our eyes from being
obsessed with this world and instead focus
on the promises of our loving God.
37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless
things;
and give me life in your ways.
38 Confirm to your servant your promise,
that you may be feared. –Psalm 119:37-38
14. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE KING
• Pray for God to bless our lives as we obey
and follow his Word.
39 Turn away the reproach that I dread,
for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I long for your precepts;
in your righteousness give me life!
15. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE MISSION
• Pray for our Nation
13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is
no rain, or command the locust to devour the
land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if
my people who are called by my name humble
themselves, and pray and seek my face and
turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal
their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:13-14
16. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE MISSION
• Pray for God to empower us to reach the lost
29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant
to your servants to continue to speak your word
with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your
hand to heal, and signs and wonders are
performed through the name of your holy servant
Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in
which they were gathered together was shaken,
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
–Acts 4:29-31
17. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE MISSION
• Pray lastly for the nations
1Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!
2 Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples! –
Psalm 96:1-3
18. SETTING OUR EYES ON THE MISSION
9 After this I looked, and behold, a great
multitude that no one could number, from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and
languages, standing before the throne and
before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with
palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out
with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our
God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
–Revelations 7:9-10
