2. Discipline …
• The term discipline originates from the Latin words ‘discipulus’ which means ‘pupil’ and
‘disciplina’ which means ‘teaching’.
ਅਧਿਐਨ ਖੇਤਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਾਂ 'ਡਿਡਿਪੁਲਿ' ਤੋਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਡਿਿਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ 'ਡਿਡਦਆਰਥੀ' ਅਤੇ ' ਅਡਿਐਨ ' ਡਿਿਦਾ

• Oxford English Dictionary defines the term discipline as "a branch of learning or knowledge".

• Refers to a branch of academic study and socially acknowledged name. It is the fields of human
knowledge which students study at university and colleges.

3. Discipline …
• It is inscribed in, the national and international networks of research, university departments,
research institutes and scientific journals that produces, certifies, and rewards, that which is
called as the discipline.

• John Walton states, “By discipline I mean a body of subject matter made up of concepts, facts,
and theories, so ordered that can be deliberately and systematically taught.”

• Commonly defined by the university facilities and learned societies, to which they belong and
the academic journals in which they publish.

9. Types of Academic Disciplines
• Biglan (1973) gave a concept on three dimensions of academic discipline-
1. Pure/Applied: the extent to which the subject matter is practically applied

2. Life/Non-life: involvement with living or organic matter

3. Hard/Soft: The natural and physical sciences are considered to possess more clearly delineated paradigms are
“hard”. Those having less-developed paradigms and low consensus on knowledge bases and modes of inquiry
(e.g., the social sciences and humanities) are considered "soft"
