2. Introduction
After graduating with a BS and MS from Friends University in
Wichita, Kansas, Jeffery Scott Fraser became the CEO of the
software company NIC, Inc. Now the owner of Tsaina Lodge in
Valdez, Alaska, Jeffery S. Fraser enjoys bird dog field trialing
in his spare time.
Field trialing is a way of testing and evaluating the ability of
bird dogs to work effectively under competitive circumstances.
A trial is designed to mimic the conditions in a day of field
shooting. The dogs must show their competence with all types
of game, from rabbits to fowl.
Some of the most popular dog breeds were bred for their
prowess in hunting. Cocker spaniels were bred to be expert at
flushing out game and retrieving it after it is killed by the
hunter. Labrador and golden retrievers were named for their
ability to bring back a carcass, and pointers and setters were
known for identifying potential hunting targets.
