The Paris painting gallery is one of the biggest in the France. It is possibility the secondary most important painting gallery in Paris after the Louvre. It contains most French paintings in the 18C and 19C. It is the gallery for French Impressionism. However it does not include French modern art, which is housed in Musee d’Art Moderne. Among its collection, it included such painters as Millet, Courbet, Corot, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, VanGogh etc. It is well worth a visit.

6. Cordie 1857-1861
The three beautifully made busts by Charles Cordie (1827-1906). It was made around 1857-1861, with bronze and onyx for
display, in the Salon in 1861. He travelled to Algeria and Egypt among other places. His works were created during the rising of
Orientalism in France in the 19C.
8. Millet 1866
This is a self-portrait of the artist.
Gustave Courbet led the 19C Realism
movement in France. He is politically
very active and had to free the country
several times.
10. Millet 1857
Millet is noted for his
paintings of rural life in
19C France. He was
also part of the Realism
art movement.
11. Delacroix 1858
Delacroix is a major French painter of the
Romantic movement. Delacroix was
influenced by Gericault probably due to
his interest in English art and in animal
painting. He also admired Gros, studied
Rubens and Veronese. He was an
admirer of Constable.
12. Daumier 1860s
Honere-Victorin Daumier was
much well known for it
caricatures and political cartoons
and satirizing the behaviour of
his countrymen in newspapers
and periodicals.

Manet 1873
In the second half of 19C. European
society became richer. There were
spare times for the well to do families.
At the same, railways were being built
across Europe, giving access to places
like beaches and the coasts. A number
artists took advantage of the new
found freedom and painted beaches,
coastal cliffs, fishing boats etc.
Manet painting technique is based on
his opposition to light and shadow,
with as little half-tone as possible.
With a restricted palette, black is very
important to his paintings.
20. Monet was the leading member of
the Impressionist movement. He a
very long career and his style
changes throughout his career. He
prefer painting out door.
Monet 1886 & 1893
Monet met most of the major
artists of his time, including
Manet, Sisley, Renoir, Courbet,
Cezanne, Whistler, Pissarro etc.
To escape the Franco-Prussian
War, he moved to London, where
he studied in th National Gallery
paintings of Turner and Constable.
31. Tissot 1878
James Tissot was born in Nantes but settled in England after the Franco-
Prussian War of 1870. He spent 10 years in Palestine, working on the
pictures of the Life of Christ, but he is now remembered as the most
charming illustrator of Victorian life (as in this painting).

35. Van Gogh 1888.
Vincent van Gogh was Dutch, son of a
pastor. He worked in the Hague, London
and Paris as picture dealer. Vincent was
very closed to his brother Theo, such that
they were buried together side by side.
In 1886 he joined Theo in Paris and came
into contact with Impressionists. He met
Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarro, Degas,
Seurat, and Gauguin. In 1888 he went to
Arles where he was later joined by
Gauguin. .
In 1886 he became insane, and from then
until his death suffered intermittent attacks
of mental trouble. He was moved from
asylum to asylums. In July 1890 he shot
himself. His brother Theo died six months
later.
43. Sargent 1890

Sargent was the greatest and most
successful society portraitist of his time,
painting the rich and famous with an
elegance and flair that no contemporary
artist could match.
An essentially shy and private man, he
was charming and accomplished and,
although he never married, was devoted
to his family and circle of friends.
His natural fluency and the brilliant
accuracy of his portraits brought him
outstanding success in America and
England.
44. France like many other countries in
Europe was undergoing tremendous
changes, as industrial revolution
began to transform their economies.
Yet not many paintings like this one
painted the industrial progress made.
Cormon 1893 1895-97
46. Bernard 1908.
Emile Bernard was the friend of van
Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne. He
experimented with Signac’s
Pointillism c1886, but subsequently
quarrelled with Signac and destroyed
all the works of this type.
He then went to Brittany, where he
met Gauguin. In 1886, and he
evolved a style known as
Cloisonnisme from its resemblances
to cloisonne enamels.
Bernard travelled in Egypt, Spain and
Italy. His later works are reactionary
in style and often vitiated by a
sentimental religiosity.
48. The railway station was built between 1898 and 1900. It was converted to Musee d’Orsay in 1986.
