This song "God of This City" by Hello Love refers to God/Lord being the ruler of cities and people. However, the document raises several issues with the theology presented in the song. It argues that Satan is called the god of this world in the Bible, so it is not accurate to claim God rules cities or nations. Additionally, the song lacks clear references to God or Jesus from the Bible. The document urges believers to praise God with words and songs that are grounded in biblical truth and theology to avoid weak or false teachings.

CCM Song Alert God of This City
1. CCM Song Alert: “God of This City,” by Hello Love
You’re the God of this city
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are
You’re the light in this darkness
You’re the hope to the hopeless
You’re the peace to the restless
You are
There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
You’re the God of this city
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are
2. You’re the light in this darkness
You’re the hope to the hopeless
You’re the peace to the restless
You are
There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done here
There is no one like our God
There is no one like you God
We believe
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
We believe
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done here
3. We believe, we believe greater things
Greater things, greater things
Greater things, greater things
Question 1: The title of this song is “God of this City,” BUT
whichever city this song is sung, is that a TRUE statement? Is
EVERYONE in EVERY city this song is sung in “born again?”
Answer 1: No, it is clear that God is NOT the God of any city
because every city is rampant with sin and rejection of Christ;
not to mention, the DOCTRINE is off (take note, from the TITLE
ALONE, the doctrine is WRONG). The Bible tells us that:
2Corinthians 4:4, In whom the god of this world [Satan] hath
blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the
glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine
unto them.
This is why the Lord tells us to TEST all things:
1Thessalonians 5:21, …prove all things AND 1John 4:1, test
the spirits whether they be of God.
To PROTECT us FROM FALSE TEACHING
Question 2: How many “Yous” are there in this song?
Answer 2: I counted 17.
Question 3: How many “Gods” or “Lords” are there in this
song?
Answer 3: I counted 10.
Question 4: WHO is this SONG honoring?
4. Answer 4: “You,” “The Lord,” or “God,” but WHO is this “Lord”
or “God?” There is NO theological or scriptural basis to know
who they are.
Question 5: Does this song present truth or is it more on
feeling good with the beat and the repetition of words without
truth?
Answer 5: As we saw earlier, the TITLE is OFF as well as the
LYRICS:
“You’re the God of this city”
“You’re the King of these people”
“You’re the Lord of this nation”
Scripture AND common sense tell us that this is NOT the case.
Who is god of this world, god of the flesh, god of the nations? It
is the Devil. Shocked? Read what Satan was ready to give the
Lord during the Lord’s temptation:
Matthew 4:8-9, (8) Again, the devil taketh him up into an
exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of
the world, and the glory of them; (9) And saith unto him, All
these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship
me.
That’s right, Satan was going to give the Lord the kingdoms of
this world because he possessed them. Remember, the Lord’s
kingdom is not an earthly kingdom, a spiritual kingdom:
John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if
my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight,
that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my
kingdom not from hence.
5. This is why we need to be edified in church so that we can go
out and share the Gospel of Christ with others whether by
lifestyle, word, or deed:
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the
Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not
their lives unto the death.
Therefore, since right doctrine is ABSENT from this song, it
must be more on FEELING GOOD, especially when you
consider the rhythm or beat of this song.
Question 6: How do I know this song exalts the GOD of the
Bible and CHRIST His Son?
Answer 6: I don’t know WHO it is exalting. It is unclear. The
“exaltee” can be any “God” or “Lord” that I IMAGINE it to be.
Additionally, as we saw in question 5, this song is not a song
based on TRUTH which is what God desires (John 4:23).
FEEDBACK: As believers, we must understand that we are to
praise the NAME of the LORD:
2Thessalonians 1:12, That the NAME of our Lord Jesus Christ
may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of
our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1Corinthians 1:2, Unto the church of God which is at Corinth,
to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints,
with all that in every place call upon the NAME of Jesus Christ
our Lord, both theirs and ours
6. We are to PRAISE Him according to His WORKS and praise
HIS GLORIES:
Psalm 40:5, Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works
which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward:
they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would
declare and speak of them, they are more than can be
numbered.
Psalm 107:22, And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of
thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
We are to PRAISE Him in TRUTH, praise HIM with SPECIFIC
words, BIBLE words, according to HIS revealed truth:
John 4:23, … the true worshippers shall worship the Father in
spirit and in TRUTH: for the Father SEEKETH such to worship
him.
1Corinthians 14:8, 15 For if the trumpet give an uncertain
sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? … (15) I will sing
with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
As you can see, the THEOLOGY of “Blessed Be Your Name” is
weak and cause for every believer to be alert (sober [1Peter
5:8], vigilant [1Peter 5:8], watch [1Peter 4:7], stand fast
[2Thessalonians 2:15]):
Romans 13:11, And that, knowing the time, that now it is high
time to AWAKE out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer
than when we believed.
7. I BESEECH you DEAR READER take the time to READ the
SCRIPTURES quoted above, LEARN to WALK in TRUTH
before GOD, “prove all things” (1Thessalonians 5:21), “test the
spirits whether they be of God” (1John 4:1), and “study to show
yourself approved unto God” (2Timothy 2:15). PROTECT
yourself from fallacy!
