PHRASES
OBJECTIVES:
Identify noun and verb phrases
Use noun and verb phrases
appropriately and meaningfully.
A phrase is a group of related words (within a
sentence) without both subject and verb.
Example:
 They are clapping for the pope.
 They are clapping for the pope.
A noun phrase consists of a noun and other
related words usually modifiers (happy, young)
or determiners (a, an, the) which modify the
noun. It functions like a noun in a sentence.
Example:
 Delia had a weak heart.
 Delia had a weak heart.
A verb phrase is a combination of main verb and
its auxiliary (helping verb) in a sentence.
Some examples of helping verbs are the following;
am is are be
has have do does
did may might must
can shall will
Example:
The shot did not scare Biryuk.
The shot did not scare Biryuk.
Ex: Father had told me that hunters always spat for
luck. VP
Identify the phrase in each sentence and tell if it is a
noun phrase or a verb phrase.

  • 3. OBJECTIVES: Identify noun and verb phrases Use noun and verb phrases appropriately and meaningfully.
  • 4. A phrase is a group of related words (within a sentence) without both subject and verb. Example:  They are clapping for the pope.  They are clapping for the pope.
  • 5. A noun phrase consists of a noun and other related words usually modifiers (happy, young) or determiners (a, an, the) which modify the noun. It functions like a noun in a sentence. Example:  Delia had a weak heart.  Delia had a weak heart.
  • 6. A verb phrase is a combination of main verb and its auxiliary (helping verb) in a sentence. Some examples of helping verbs are the following; am is are be has have do does did may might must can shall will
