1. Taj Mahal The Epitome Of Love
As quoted by Rabindranath Tagore, “The Taj Mahal rises above the banks of the river
like a solitary tear suspended on the cheek of time.” I am sure many agree with the
words said in the praise of the marble-clad mausoleum. A shrine dedicated to eternal
love, it is almost impossible to skip one day Agra trip from Delhi for those who are
visiting the capital city. The pinnacle of Mughal architecture, it took about 20 years to
build the complex. A perfect combination of India, Islamic and Persian design, the Taj
Mahal is a craftsman masterpiece.
History of Taj Mahal
As Shah Jahan became the Emperor of the kingdom, he delegated his wife, Arjumand
Banu with the royal seat. He was so impressed by her intelligence, and beauty he also
bestowed her with the title of Mumtaz Mahal, which means the "Jewel of the Palace".
She was his favorite wife among others and she escorted him everywhere. In 1631
Mumtaz passed away while delivering her 14th
child and grieving Shah Jahna decided
to build a monument across Yamuna River in her memory.
2. The Construction Details Of Taj Mahal
Construction began around 1632 and the chief architect was Ustad Ahmad Lahore.
Made up of white marble it was embedded with semi-precious stones in a technique
which is known as pietra dura. The monument's central dome, which is 73 meters in
height, is surrounded by four smaller domes. The arched entrance of the mausoleum
was inscribed with verses from the Quran in calligraphy. The monument's interior
comprises an octagonal marble chamber, which was bedecked with semi-precious
stones as it houses a false tomb, of Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal complex main gateway
was made up of red sandstone to complete the look.
