The 6th and 9th Commandment
1.
2.
3. 6th Commandment
Requirement
The Commandment seems simple and direct. It
forbids married persons from entering into sexual
union with someone other than their spouse. Its
aim was to protect the family, the absolutely
necessary basis for society. It also forbids all
impurity and immodesty.
4. What is Sexuality?
It is a fundamental component of personality, one of its modes of being,
of manifestation, of communicating with others, of feeling, of expressing and
of living human life.
Sexuality is today understood in a more complete and integral sense than
in the past when the focus was almost completely on the sexual act.
Today sexuality signifies an essential dimension of the whole person, by
which he/she enters into relationship with others.
5. Moral Duties
The Commandment enjoins a free and responsible
fidelity to a conjugal union that last for a lifetime.
A joining of a man and a woman in the fullness of
their personal lives, a real, complete communion at all
levels.
A Permanent enduring bond that is “for keeps”.
Loyalty
Faithfulness
Love
Mutual support for each other
6. Prohibitions
1. Incest – It is a crime of cohabitation or
sexual acts between persons with direct
blood relations and those related within
the fourth civil degree of consanguinity.
A person is guilty of incest when he or
she marries or engages in sexual
intercourse with a person whom he or she
knows to be related to him or her,
legitimately or out of wedlock, such as, an
ancestor, descendant, brother or sister of,
either, either the whole or the half blood,
uncle, aunt, nephew or niece.
7. 2. Extramarital Sex (Adultery)
Extramarital sex (Adultery) is a
violation of marriage covenant by
willful participation in sexual activity
with someone who is not married or
other than one’s spouse. This act
constitutes a grievous violation of the
law of chastity.
8. Examples of Adultery
1. Bigamy – a crime of being
simultaneously married twice. It is
the crime of marrying somebody
while being legally married to
somebody else.
9. 2. Polygamy – The practice of marriage to more than one
spouse simultaneously. It is the practice of having many
wives and many husbands at one time.
Forms of Polygamy
a. Polygyny – practice of
having multiple wives.
b. Polyandry – practice
of having multiple
husbands.
10. Divorce – judicial termination of
an existing marriage relationship
Annulment – judicial determination that although
a marriage relationship was attempted but that no
marriage existed from the very beginning or void
ab initio because of certain impediments.
Legal Separation – a separation of
spouses which does not involves
dissolution of the marriage but in which
Death Insanity Repeated physical violence

Already married Subsequent bigamous marriage
Desertion for a specified length of time Hidden pre-pregnancy Sexual infidelity
Attempt against life
Abandonment
11. Subsequent marriage due to divorce
and legal separation may lead one to
commit adultery. The couple is still
validly married even if granted
divorce and legal separation
according to Church teachings. The
Church recognizes subsequent
marriage only if after being granted
with annulment.
12. “Thou shall not covet your
neighbor’s wife”
(Ex 20:17; Dt 5:21)
13. Completes the 6th commandment by going to the interior root and source of the
flesh: covetousness of the heart.
Human covetousness has been the radical source of sin that alienates us from
God and our fellowmen.
It calls us to acknowledge our deep inbred lust for possessions and power and
to venture out in an “Exodus” away from the “fleshpots of Egypt”, the house of
slavery, toward the liberation of respect and solidarity with one another.
9th Commandment
14. St. Paul exhorted his converts: “Put to death whatever in
your nature is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil
desires and that lust which is idolatry” (Col 3:5)
To the Ephesians he wrote: “Make no mistake about this:
no fornicator: no unclean or lustful person-effect an
idolater- has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and
of God” (Eph 5:5)
9th Commandment
Requirement
15. Moral Duties
be pure in your thoughtsBe decent in your dress
Be pure in your acts
16. Prohibitions
1. Masturbation – It is the
deliberate stimulation of the genital
organs in order to derive sexual
pleasure. It is an abuse of our sexual
powers because it lacks sexuality’s
essential relationship, which is
ordered towards self-giving love and
the service of the life according to
God’s design. Often it is a result of
deficient affective growth, and/or a
symptom of much deeper personal
problems.
17. 2. Homosexuality – refers to
relationships between men or
between women who
experience and exclusive or
predominant sexual attraction
towards person of the same
sex. It represents another
grave impediment to the
integral sexual growth of a
person. St. Paul Condemns
both male and female
homosexual acts as God’s
punishment for idolatry, the
worship of unnatural lust.
18. Pornography
“printed or visual material containing
the explicit description or display of
sexual organs or activity, intended to
stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic
or emotional feelings.” - Google
– Gives injury to the dignity of its
participants (actors, vendors, and the
public), since each one becomes an
object of base pleasure and illicit profit
for others. It immerses all who are
involved in the illusion of fantasy
world. It is a grave offense.
19. Sexual
HarassmentIt is a harassment or
unwelcome attention of
a sexual nature. It
includes a range of
behavior from mild
transgressions and
annoyances to serious
abuses, which can even
involve forced sexual
activities. Sexual
harassment is
considered any form of
sexual advancement
committed by a person.
20. Sex on
Phone/Sex on
TextIt is a type of virtual sex
that refers to sexually
explicit conversation
between two or more
persons via telephone,
especially when at least
one of the participants
masturbates or engages
in sexual fantasy.
21. Impure Touching
This is touching to
arouse the sexual
passion outside of the
proper use of sex. It
applies to touches done
individually or on
another person. Impure
touching is a mortal
sin.
22. Petting and Necking
Are always serious sins
when their purpose is to
arouse passion. Don’t
think that petting and
necking is an innocent
display of affection. They
are mortal sins and can
lead to immoral
consequences.
23. Kissing
Kissing for the purpose of arousing sexual
passion is a mortal sin. Kissing between parents
and children, relatives, and so forth, is not a sin
because it is not done to arouse the sexual
passion.
24. Indecent
DancingDecent dancing is good
recreation and is not sinful.
However, indecent dancing is
arouses sexual cravings. There
are several ways in which this
sin is committed: by “close”
dancing, by certain kinds of
slow dancing, and other forms
of indecent dancing, for
example, dancing in poorly
lighted rooms, “dirty dancing”
and so forth. Beware of
dangerous dance halls. Keep
your children out of such
places.
25. Indecent Dress
(Immodesty)
Indecent dress even it is
not a mortal sin at first, it
can easily become one. It
can lead people to sin.
Men’s passions are easily
aroused by low-cut
dresses, short skirts,
indecent sweaters and
bathing suits. Many rape
cases were induced by
wearing of skimpy suits.
26. Impure Shows/
X-rated Movies
In the modern world there
are varieties of impure
shows which can lead
people to sin. To watch
impure floor shows, stage
shows, movies or videos, or
to read books or magazines
with the deliberate intention
of arousing the sex passion
is always a mortal sin.
27. Impure
Thoughts and
DesiresImpure thoughts and desires
are not sins in themselves.
Even great Saints were
troubled with these
temptations St. Jerome
suffered by these temptations
for over 25 years. If the
person deliberately consents
to the thoughts and desires to
gain pleasure form them, they
then become mortal sins.
28. Mary, Mother most pure, and Joseph, chaste guardian of the
Virgin, to you I entrust the purity of my soul and body. I beg
you to plead with God for me that I may never for the
remainder of my life soil my soul by any sin of impurity. I
earnestly wish to be pure in thought, word and deed in
imitation of your own holy purity. Obtain for me a deep sense
of modesty, which will be reflected in my external conduct.
Protect my eyes, the windows of my soul, from anything that
might dim the luster of a heart that must mirror only Christ-
like purity. And when the “Bread of Angels” becomes my food
in Holy Communion, seal my heart forever against the
suggestions of sinful pleasures. Finally, may I be among the
number of those of whom Jesus spoke, “Blessed are the pure of
heart for they shall see God.” Amen.
