Fiction in the Post-
Human Age
UNIT 1:To Be Human and Humane
2. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
• distinguish the literary uses of language from the non-literary and
understand their uses as well as the formal features and
conventions of literature
• appreciate the cultural and aesthetic diversity of the literatures of
the world.
• situate the texts in the context of the region, nation, and the world
• examine the relationship between text and context
3. Let's Play a Game

35. • “Post-human age” means the period in our history which comes
after the era when human beings took center stage. Now, machines
or products of our technology have become more prominent.
36. Science Fiction
• is a genre of fiction in which the stories
often tell about science and technology of
the future.
• It evolved as a response to fantasy.
37. Science Fiction
• Plot creates situations different from those of
both the present day and the known past.
• Texts are often set in the future, in space, on a
different world, or in a different universe or
dimension.
38. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
• First novel in English to deal with the possibility that
science can create a monster that can destroy science, and
possibly mankind.
• The blend of Gothic materials and science in this novel
brought the tale of terror clearly into the stream of science
fiction and also gave it a more credible base.
39. Major Themes in Science Fiction
• Space travel to and from other planets
(ie: Star Wars, Star Trek)
• Time travel to the past and future
(ie: Back to the Future)
• Psychological/biological changes to man
brought about by scientific changes
(ie: The Incredible Hulk, Spider Man)
40. Major Themes in Science Fiction
• Supernormal powers/talents
(ie: Superman, Spiderman, Batman)
• Science applied to human relations for constructive or destructive purposes
(ie: Weird Science, Frankenstein)
• Battle with alien life forms
(ie: Signs, The Day the Earth Stood Still, District 9)
• Alternate Universe
(ie: Star Wars)
41. What is Extrapolation?
Extrapolation is when a writer takes a known scientific fact and imagines what
might happen if certain events or circumstances evolve.
For example:
1. Man can build space shuttles.
2. Let’s imagine, man can travel to faraway plan
42. Science Fiction VS. Fantasy
• Science fiction is really based on facts. On the contrary, fantasy is only
imaginary, and not based on facts.
• Fantasy involves things that do not exist in real life. On the other hand, science
fiction is almost related to real things, and based on technology and science.
• Science fiction has its groundings in science and is possible, whereas fantasy has
no grounding in reality, and so is not possible.
44. Jeffrey S. Kaplan
• is an expert in the young adult genre.
• author, editor, and contributor

46. 1. Biotechnology (noun)- the manipulation (as through genetic engineering) of living organisms or their
components to produce useful usually commercial products (such as pest resistant crops, new
bacterial strains, or novel pharmaceuticals). (Merriam-Webster Dictionary,2022)
Example:
US companies lead the world in biotechnology.
2. Cloning (noun)- the aggregate of genetically identical cells or organisms asexually produced by or
from a single progenitor cell or organism.) (Merriam-Webster Dictionary,2022)
Example:
A plant produced by cloning.
47. 3. Lurks-(noun) to be concealed but capable of being discovered. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary,2022)
Example:
What eveil lurks in the hearts of men?
4. Genetic engineering-(noun) the group of applied techniques of genetics and biotechnology used to cut
up and join together genetic material and especially DNA from one or more species of organism and to
introduce the result into organism in order to change one or more of its characteristics(Merriam-Webster
Dictionary,2022)
Example:
The crops were made resistant to disease by genetic engineering.
48. 5. Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) (noun)- the part of a living being that carries genetic information.
(English Dictionary, 2022)
Example:
The killer leaves nothing; no DNA, no fingerprints, no witnesses.
50. • an associate Professor of English at the state University of New
York Plattsburgh
• teaches children’s, young adult, and nineteenth-century literature.
• Fiction writer
Dr. Elaine Ostry
51. • In “Is He Still Human? Are You?’ Young Adult Science Fiction in the Post-human
Age,” researcher Elaine Ostry analyzes science fiction texts, written for young adults,
which deal with the tenets of our new biotechnology age: cloning, genetic
engineering, prolongation of life.
• Ostry concludes that most of these contemporary adolescent fictional texts place
“nurture above nature” and promote a safe and traditional vision of humanity.
• Ostry writes, the potential of biotechnology to change human form is ever present in
young adult literature that recently has seen science fiction come to life.
52. • The once time honored “stuff of science fiction novels”— cloning, genetic
engineering, etc., — is now the everyday realities of young people’s lives.
• Biotechnology can change the human form and mind, and machines can become a
reasonable part of the human body, then the term post-human body or “techno-body”
is a distinct entity.
• Scientific advances have changed the map of young adult literature.
• Science fiction for young adults attempt to mediate the post-human age to young
audiences
53. • Ostry insists, these are all intriguing questions and all indicative of how much young
adult literature has changed dramatically in the last twenty years.
*What are pros and cons of cloning?
*Of what value is the human versus the new,”improved” human?
*And how can young people really know what it means to be fully alive if all
they know are people who have been genitically engineered?
55. • To be specific, this an article review of Ostry’s paper.
• Young adult fiction is the main genre discussed in Ostry’s paper as reviewed by Kaplan.
• Paragraph one summarizes the findings of Ostry’s research.
• Paragraph two contains what Kaplan thinks should also be considered given the findings
of Ostry’s research.
• Paragraph three raises additional questions about the super-class of human beings in
stories young adults read today.
56. • Ostry’s research is about science-fiction which deals with cloning, genetic engineering,
and prolongation of life.
• Ostry raised and investigated these questions in her research:
a. How can young people know what it really means to be fully alive if all they
read in most science fiction are about super-people who were genetically engineered
(techno-humans)?
b. Of what value is the “human” versus the new “improved human”?
57. c. What are the pros and cons of cloning?
d. What does it mean to be human?
• Ostry’s conclusion is that even if fictional text that young people now read have a super-
class of human beings as heroes, most of the contemporary adolescent fictional texts still
place “nurture over nature” and promote a safe and traditional humanity. In other words,
what is important is that how one was brought up is what really matters.

Good morning/afternoon class!
How do you do?
It is nice to hear that you are doing great.
Anyway, last Monday/Tuesday we discussed the short story “Dead Stars” by Paz Marquez Benitez as well as the poem “Dead Stars in response to the short story .My question is that, what have you learned / realized regarding the topics we discussed?
In our previous lesson we traced the development of the Philippine literature from the pre-colonial era to contemporary times. Today we're going to move on to the 21st century literature from the world. The first unit in this chapter, To Be Human and Humane, showcase literary pieces that seek to answer the fundamental question ," What does it mean to be human?"
I prepared 3 games this morning/afternoon ..the logo quiz, 4 pics 1 word, guess the movie
Let’s play the first game!
Game mechanics:
A logo of a gadget/automobile will be shown and you are going to guess the name of the gadget/automobile. Are you now ready?
Let’s now procced to the second game!
Game mechanics:
I will present four pictures and then your are going to guess what specific word fits with the theme of the photos presented.
Let’s move to the third game!
Game mechanics:
I will present a poster of a sci-fi movies. The players are going to guess the title of the movie.

a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name.
How’s the game?
What is the impact of technology in our lives? Anyone?
Why do you suppose our age of technology is referred to as a post-human age?
1. Whereas we relied mainly on human beings to get things done before, we now have machines that can accomplish task faster and better with little effort.
2. We produce and use mechanical replacements of some parts of the human body like legs and arms for amputees.
3. Popular now in entertainment and literary texts are characters with super powers.
Let’s talk about science fiction .How would YOU define science fiction?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCI MOVIE?
WHAT ARE THE TRENDS THEME OF MOVIES NOW A DAYS?

I would like to give you enough time to read the featured text and answer the seatwork that I prepared. I will give you 30 minutes to read the text and answer the seatwork. This seatwork is worth 25 points. I will send a copy of your seatwork in our Fb messenger. Download the file. After you finished your seatwork submit it on the canvas >assignment. After 30 minutes I will resume the discussion. Please go back to the zoom meeting because I will check the attendance at the latter part of our class. It is clear class? Any questions? If none, the time starts now. If you have questions send me a message right away. Thank you
In this section , let’s get to know Jeffrey s. Kaplan the author of the featured text.
We have here vocabulary words that were taken in the literary selection. I will read first the word with its meaning and then afterwards I will ask a volunteer to read thegiven example .
The advancements in technology throughout the years have seen changes in the form and content of literature. In this lesson, the selection tackles an issue in genre which was reborn in the 21st century.
SA NOTES...
Who is Dr. Elaine Ostry?
Biotechnology- is the integration of natural sciences and engineering sciences in order to achieve the application of organisms, cells, parts thereof and molecular analogues for products and services. It was used by Karoly Ereky in 1919, meaning the production of products from raw materials with the aid of living organisms.
Cloning- a technique scientist use to make exact genetic copies of living things. Scientists make clones in the lab. They often clone genes in order to study and better understand them. To clone a gene, researcher take DNA from a living creature and insert it into a carrier like bacteria or yeast. Every time that carrier reproduces, a new copy of gene is made .
In 1996, Scottish scientist cloned the first animal, sheep they named Dolly. She was cloned using an under cell taken from an adult sheep.
Genetic engineering- is the process of using recombinant DNA technology to alter the genetic make up of an organism. Traditionally, humans have manipulated genomes indirectly by controlling breeding and selecting offspring with desired traits.
Prolongation of life-means any medical procedure, treatment or intervention including artificially provided sustenance and hydration , which sustains, restores, or supplants a spontaneous vital function.
What is the difference between nurture and nature ?
nature -inborm
nurture-how one was raised
How would describe the characters and superheroes in young adult literature nowadays?
The characters or superheroes presented in young adult literature are not composed of tissues that grow, mature, and eventually die. They make look like human beings but they are composed of metals and mechanical parts that stay as is.
Every thing from artificially created limbs to designer babies is very real for today’s adolescent.
This means that the term “biotechnology ...“bio” refers to life and “technology” refers to the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Hence, the terms “post-human body,” “techno-body”, and “new improved human body” are used to refer to scientifically produced machines that may look like and can do what human beings do.
The other problem Kaplan sees in the fictional texts young people read is the desperate need to truly understand ourselves in the light of our newfound technology.
Today , thanks to advances in DNA labeling, we can determine much of a person before he or she is even born, or created by other means
Mostly the target audience of science fiction movies/literarry text are children...teenagers and young at heart
