World War II was won through blood, bullets, and strategy. Unfortunately, a lot of strategies required land forces to be entrenched in key areas as the troops advanced. Soldiers would often spend days or even weeks down in the trenches. And with manpower a key resource during the war, keeping the soldiers healthy was one of the military’s top priority. Here is how soldiers stayed healthy in the trenches. John Eilerman.

How did soldiers stay

World War II was won through blood, bullets, and
strategy. Unfortunately, a lot of strategies
required land forces to be entrenched in key
areas as the troops advanced. Soldiers would
often spend days or even weeks down in the
trenches. And with manpower a key resource
during the war, keeping the soldiers healthy was
one of the military’s top priority. Here is how
soldiers stayed healthy in the trenches. John
Eilerman.
Clean drinking water is always vital when it comes
to health, more so for the allied forces stuck in the
trenches. At the time, water was transported to
the trenches in petrol cans since resources were
scarce. The water was then cleaned with
chemicals. Because this left an aftertaste, this was
often consumed as tea when transferred to
individual soldier’s water bottles. John Eilermann.
Getting sick in the trenches was fairly common.

LITERATURE: A QUICK
OVERVIEW
Soldiers often su er from exhaustion, the u,
vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, rashes, and
sores. Soldiers often brought with them medicine
in the form of gelatin lamels that didn’t require
water during intake. One ailment that doesn’t get
cured by medicine was trench foot. This condition
occurs when a soldier’s foot swells up and begins
to decay. It was caused by damp and cold
conditions that cut the circulation of blood in the
lower extremities. Soldiers’ feet were often
inspected to check up on their feet. Soldiers were
asked to change into dry socks regularly to avoid
getting trench foot. John Eilermann.
Lastly, soldiers also had to take care of their
hygiene to stay healthy. Those who can leave their
trenches would wash their clothes in designated
areas. Soldiers who weren’t in front-line duty were
often given chances to take a bath in makeshift
communal bathing areas. John Eilermann.
