My Philosophy:
To me,the conceptsof Elegance andVersatilityare traitsthatpeople needinaprofessionalengineer:
Elegance: A greatconcept exhibitsthe characteristicsof being pleasinglyandofteningeniouslyneat,
simple,concise,graceful,andrefined –anelegantsolution. I lookfor elegantsolutionswhilebeing
mindful of cost,scope,andschedule. Inmyexperience,anelegantsolutionoftenwilloftenbe the least
expensive solution,andisalsolesslikelytoneedsubsequentimprovementtocompletelyfulfill the
original need.
Be Versatile: The SwissArmyknife isasurvival multi-tool thathasa verysharp blade and various other
toolsstowedinside the handle. Similarly,Iama “SwissArmyKnife”engineer–not necessarilythe
expertoneverysubject,butwell abletosuccessfullylearn,understand,bringsufficientknowledgeto
bearand proactivelyaddressthe client’srequirement. The goal isto preventclientanxietyandreduce
cost throughtimelyaction. The challenge inthis life approachistoknow whenitistime to ask forhelp.
My Background:
Energy UtilizationandAuditing: In response tothe worldwideincreasingdemandforenergyresources,
I have intentionallyrefocusedmyprofessional attentiononenergyutilization. Myexperience includes
workwithrefuse derivedfuels, renewable fuel processingimprovement, evaluatingthe practical
industrial use of powerplantsteam;processplant, gasboilerplant,andsmall buildingenergyaudits;
some pipeline design, andenergyconservation.
WebConverting,SpecialtyCoatingand Extrusion: The earlypart of mycareer wasdominatedbywork
inthe paperand webconvertingindustries. Myexperience includesarange of specialtycoating
processes(adhesive,release,mineral, hotmelt,extrusion;flexographicandgravure printing) including
solidification(drying,hardeningorcuring) systems;webhandling,unwinding,andwinding. Iam
particularlyfamiliarwithplasticextrusion,havinghadexperiencewith flatdie andprofileextrusion,flat
die extrusionprofilecontrol,single screw andtwinscrew extruders,co-extrusion,castfilmextrusion,
and extrusioncoating. OtherconvertingprocessesIhave experience withinclude slitting,calendaring,
embossing,andwateradditiontopaperwebs.
Front End Engineering: Usingthe methodspioneeredbyPMIand AACEI,I believe thatIam particularly
strongat projectfrontendengineering. Mypast workincludesconceptual processdevelopment,scope
definition,costestimating, andinitial schedule development;developmentof contractingand
procurementplans;andprojectriskidentification. Iam a strong believerin developingprocess
instrumentationandcontrol diagramsasearlyinthe projectaspossible,andcoordinatingthe
annotationonthose drawingswithotherprojectdocumentstoassure clarityincommunication.

2. Processand EquipmentSafety: Many of my projectshave hadsome level of fire hazardassociatedwith
them,and properapplicationarange of code requirements hasbeencritical. Iam familiarwith
machinerysafetysystems andtechniques. AsatrainedPHA facilitator,Ihave participatedinandlead
processhazard analysisprograms ona range of chemical facilities,includingClassI/ClassIIelectrical
hazardous area classification. Ihave taughtGlobal Harmonized SystemforChemical Hazard
Identificationand industrial safetyatthe college level,andama current OSHA 10/30 hour Outreach
Trainer.
Project Management: I have managedprojectsrangingincost froma $1000 one-daystudyto a new
$30,000,000 productionfacility,workinginthe rolesasthe Owner’sprojectengineer/projectmanager,
Engineer’sprojectmanager,technical lead/consultant,andprojectcontrolslead. Myprojectteams
have rangedinsize fromjust me to as manyas 40 people. Ihave studiedthe PMBOK techniques
developedbythe Project ManagementInstitute,andactivelyuse thesetoolsinmypractice.
Plant Designand Utilities: My career has centered onthe designandimplementationof manufacturing
plantfacilities. Thisplantdesignefforthasincludedprocessequipmentlayout,basicengineering,main
equipmentspecification,utilitysystemdimensioning,anddetaileddesignof mechanical utilities.
Specificmechanical systemsIhave leadthe designof include steamandcondensate,chilledwater,
natural gas, compressedair,plantandprocessheatingandventilating systems,dust&fume collection,
plantplumbing,processpiping,andemissionscontrol systems.
Machine Design: Oftenmanufacturingsystemprojectsrequire some unique device ormodificationto
accomplishthe manufacturingpurpose. Ihave leadthe mechanical designof equipmentfromsimple
bracketengineering,throughmore complex machinemodifications, tocustomdesignedmachinesand
complete manufacturingsystems. These designs usually include ahighlevel of participationinthe
instrumentationandcontrol systemdevelopment.
