make an
academic
appeal
What is an academic appeal?
How to challenge an academic decision:
You can appeal most academic decisions, including: n
• Confirmed academic marks
• Refusals of requests for time extensions
• Withdrawal from a course
• The first stage of appeal is called a Stage 1 appeal
• If you have appealed a decision before, you may need to make a
Stage 2 appeal. The Advice Service can advise you on how and
when to make a stage 2 appeal
Before you start
Is your appeal in time?
• You should submit your appeal within 10 working days
of receiving the decision you are appealing
• If you cannot appeal within that time limit you can ask for
a time extension if you have a good reason
• If you are unsure about the time limit, check with an
Advice Worker
Can I appeal?
You can appeal if:
Is your appeal in time?
• one of the following reasons (or “grounds” ) applies:
• you have reported extenuating circumstances (ECs) which
have not been fully and properly considered; or
• your performance was adversely affected by unreported ECs
AND you have UEA approval to submit late; or
• you have not received adequate or appropriate learning
support; or
Continued on next slide
Can I appeal?
More grounds of appeal :
• You have not received sufficient teaching, supervision or
research training; or
• Your result is not valid because correct procedure was not
followed; or
• Your result has been affected by prejudice and/or bias; or
• Significant changes made to a course were not properly
communicated and/or were not properly taken into account; or
• Natural Justice dictates that the appeal be upheld
What do I do next?
To prepare your appeal:
Complete an appeal form explaining
• What decision you are appealing
• Why you are appealing it – show which appeal ground you
are using (see previous slides)
• All the relevant facts about your appeal
• What outcome you are asking for
• Check UEA guidance on how to complete the form
• Gather your supporting evidence
• For tips on writing a good statement & guidance on what
evidence you will need see our handy guide
How do I submit my appeal?
This is what you need to do:
Is your appeal in time?
• You can submit your appeal by email or in person to your
LTS Hub.
• Make sure you quote your name and campus card number
• Make sure you keep a copy of your appeal statement,
