Introduction
A construction site visit is organized by Sr.Ang Fuey Lin on 19th
of November 2015
which located at Antara Gapi ,Hulu Selangor.This project was started in 6th
July 2014 and
will be completed in 4th
July 2016.
First of all, we are required to produce a report that combined with Measurement I ,
Construction Technology and Building Material. The main content of this report is about

the pad footing which assigned by the lecturers.
From what I saw in the notice board ,the entire architect is from Zain Hamzah
Architect film , the main contractor is from AJ-CORP Sdn Bhd ,the supplier of the
materials is from MCM Associates Sdn Bhd and the property developer is from
Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS).

Technical Observation
Before going to the site , we are required to pass up the idemnity form and each of us
need to pay RM15 for the bus fares. In the early morning, we gathered at the bus waiting
area which located at Block B. However, we also need to buy a safety helmet in order to
protect us against the impact by falling objects and struck by swinging objects.We
separated into 2 buses and we took about one hour to reach the destination.
When we reached at the construction site , I felt like very excited because this is my

first time to enter the site.In order to take time,the safety officer gave us a very short
briefing about the safety precautions to ensure that we can visit the construction site
safely.The project manager also explained to us about the whole construction process and
which company is involved into this project.
The first thing that I observed from site is pile. It is used to build the multi storey of
building. At the top of the pile is connected with the pile caps.Pile usually forced into the
ground to transfer the load to underlying soil or rock layers when the surface soils at a
proposal site are too weak or to provide enough support.
Next is the pad footing.I have a clearer vision of how pad footing look like and also
how to remove the formwork when the concrete had gained in sufficient strength.Pad
footing is suitable for all types of soil and it supported individual point load.The
advantages of it are requires little excavation , easy to construct ,minimize the cost of the
concrete and add the reinforcement bar according to the load.On the other hand , pad
footing is more expensive than strip and trench foundation.

Objective of the assignment
 To understand the basics of the construction process.
 To witness the usage of construction equipment on site including mechanical plants.
 To explore and identify various types of building materials and technology on site.
 To explain the construction of buildings and the scientific principles that underpin the
design and construction.
 To give awareness and the importance of safety in the construction site.
 Ability to communicate with construction team members and to get more
understanding about the importance of teamwork.

How a pad footing being constructed ?
1) We need to do site clearance such as removal of soil to reduce level, removal of
trees,bushes,stump of the tree and so on)
2) Next stage is site setting
out .The position of the pad
footings are being set out
according to the layout plan and normally they measured by a steel tape.

3) After finished marking and setting out of the site , the workers use the cement powder
to mark the size of the pad footing and to make it more easy to identify.
4) Excavation is now required and excavate from the earth’s surface to the specific depth
by using a excavator.
5) Hardcore is now placed at the
top of the surface.The purpose of
the hardcore is to fill hollows and to raise the finished level of an over-site concrete slab
after removal of turf. However ,it should be used in a layer which at least 150mm thick.
After placed the hardcore ,we need to compact down to a layer with a plate compactor.

6) Next is to build the formwork. To build a formwork , we need to follow a specific size
that have been measured in the plan such as adjust to fit the position and size. After that ,
we need to have two stages that to prevent the formwork falling down and to ensure that
the formwork is strong enough to support the horizontal forces of the concrete when it
poured which are to add studs and bracing.
7) After finished to build a formwork , we are required to pour a lean concrete inside the
formwork because it used to prevent direct contact of foundation concrete from the soils
and provide a uniform surface to the foundation concrete.
8) Next is to place the reinforcement bar inside the formwork. Before laying the
reinforcement bar , we need to have some spacer blocks which used to maintain
reinforcement . Hence , it also can help to protect from the fire and prevent from the

corrosion of reinforcement bar.
10) Therefore , we need to have some tiles while install the reinforcement for stump as it
has a weak tension strength even though there was a good compression strength for
concrete. Next is placing the starter bar.The reason that we need to place starter bar is
because starter bars are the reinforcement bar that cast into a member to give a lapped
connection to further reinforcement in another concrete element to be cast against it.
11) Last ,the concrete is being poured into the formwork. At this stage ,the vibrator
compactor is required as it allows for compaction in confined spaces and remove it when
the concrete had gained in sufficient strength.
What are the materials that involved in constructing a pad footing?
Concrete , steel and timber are the materials that used to construct a pad footing.
 Timber normally is for temporary work and the construction site always use it to
build formwork is because it is cheap & light weight , economical , easy to handling ,
damage part can easy to repair , reusable , doesn’t need any special equipment &
tools and also available in different size.
 Steel is permanent work. The advantages of it are strong building material for

superstructure , high melting point , recyclable , durability and high performance.
 Concrete is the world’s widely used building material.It produced from local
resources which with many grades of fine and coarse aggregate to meet standard &
special mix needs. Therefore the key ingredient of the concrete is cement which
made by limestone , shale and clay.

The contractors are introducing the entire site to us so that we can get more information for the
whole construction process and they also told us about the safety precautions to ensure that we
can visit the site safely.

Reinforcement bars and stirrups are being used to build the column and pad footing.
This is independent scaffolding which doesn’t require any buildings to support it.
Base plates and cross braces are made by the timber,steel and tubular aluminium.

resistant, does not burn and will not
contribute fuel to the spread of fire.
This is the only pad footing area from
site. As you can see,some of the
formwork have already been removed
by workers.
Workers are adding links to the bar.
This is common brick which used
widely and it also available in
many sizes and finishes

Conclusion
After visiting the construction site, I realized that working at the site is much more
laborious when compare to the person who working in the office because of the existing
risks and weather condition. However , I also gained a lot of new experiences and extra
knowledge about the pad footing that I had never ever learn in class.
Throughout this project, I found out that communication between workers and project
manager are very important because it is the only way to ensure that they can overcome
the problems together and make the process of construction more efficiency. Beside that,
I also have a better understanding and clearer vision of what I had never seem before
such as pad footing , pilecap , stirrups , reinforcement bars and so forth.
Besides that , I also get better understanding about the safety in the construction site
because it is really important and that is we need a safety helmet.Other than that , there
are also some obvious dangerous things surrounding us which is not easily to find such as
nails , fragment ,holes and so forth.
Last but not least , I would like to say millions of thanks to our lecturers because this
site visit had given me a better understanding about the construction process which may
