The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf(CBTL), Business strategy case study
Looking back at your preliminary task,
1. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
Cover Progression
2. My preliminary task
As you can see my
preliminary task is very
basic in design and skill
with basic layout and
text also on the cover
the cover lines overlap
onto my character this
makes the magazine
untidy and basic
3. Preliminary to One
The first version of my cover has more advanced fonts than my preliminary task and uses
the text effect drop shadow which is something I had no knowledge of during my
preliminary task. However the cover lines still go over characters faces and the colour
scheme makes it hard to read them against the background and the cover lines too long
4. One to Two
The second version of my cover has shorter cover lines and now
nothing cover any characters face I also changed the colour of the
cover lines to make them easier to read but because of where they
are positioned they are still harder to read, also I have added a main
cover line that has it’s own box to make it stand out more.
5. Two to Three
On my third cover I have changed the picture so now there is only one character which is
used more often than group photos in music magazines similar to mine and it makes it
easier to fit the cover lines around the character, I also changes the masthead because I
thought this colour would be more appropriate for my genre also I used stroke on this
masthead as well as drop shadow. The picture is not very good as the character looks
squashed and the background changes i.e. It isn’t all one colour which would make it easier
to read cover lines, and the entire thing is really dull
6. Three to Four
On my fourth cover I have made the picture brighter made the character look a little more human and less
squashed in as well as cropping out the bits of the background that looked different so now it all looks the
same, I also changed the main cover line by making it bigger and have it’s own banner, this is something done
often by Kerrang! so it fits into the conventions of my magazine as well as making it grab the consumers
attention much better, I moved the “posters” to the bottom as this is a convention in other magazines also
this leaves room for my banner I put a red border around the “posters” to make them stand out much more
and grab attention another small change I made was making the word “posters” red so it is easily recognised
as a heading as well as grabbing consumer attention, I want to draw attention to the posters more because
they are freebies and if the consumers know of the freebies they are much more likely to buy my magazine
7. Four to Five
On my fifth cover I didn’t change much, I added the text effect stroke to all my
cover lines to make them stand out more this also makes them much easier to read
8. Five to Six
On my sixth cover all I have done is added a barcode to my magazine this is
important as it is a code for all magazines and needed to be on there
9. Six to Seven
On my seventh cover I changed my picture because the character I had was not very appropriate for
the genre (not appropriate enough for my front cover). My new character is much more relatable to
my audience and more appropriate for the genre because he is in all black even his hair and he looks
angry which is a stereotype for my genre. I also rearranged my cover lines to fit around the new
character but they still touch him also I changed the colour of the banner behind “exclusive
interview” and the colour of the text to draw more attention to the main cover line
10. Seven to Eight
In my eighth cover I have neatened up the picture to make look
brighter and clearer I have also rearranged the cover lines of my
magazine so they no longer touch my character at all, I also made the
“exclusive interview” upper case so it would stand out more and grab
attention better as it is part of the main cover line
11. Eight to Nine/Final product
On my final product I have added a price, date and issue number as these are codes of
magazines. I have also moved my cover lines away from the edge of the page so nothing would
get lost if the magazine were printed and I deleted the “on page 16” part of the “AWESOME
PRIZES” cover line to make it as short as possible and so it would have more space making it
look cleaner an additional note the cover line “AWESOME PRIZES” is in upper case because it
is advertising freebies so it needs to stand out because a consumer is more likely to buy a
magazine if there are freebies as I found out in my audience research
12. What I have learned
Throughout the creation of this product I have learnt a lot about
Photoshop like how to change the levels of photos, how to apply
effects to text and crop pictures,
