3. The Athletic Trend
Sport Provides Style Inspiration
Key Direction For The Athletic Trend
The key sports that designers have focused on were tennis and football. Modern interpretations of the timeless
tennis dress were on display at Victoria Beckham and Louise Goldin RTW. This item is a natural for Spring and both
dresses and separates were highlighted in their collections. Varsity looks that incorporate numbers or letters are
also a key graphic element of the athletic trend and continue to prove popular at retail.
The classic football jersey has been seen before but this season there are new upscale versions and this item has
already been spotted on the streets of major fashion capitals around the world. This is a great piece that can be
dressed up to enhance a casual look. It can be worn with a pair of boyfriend jeans and there are some longer
length football jersey dresses that look great with a motorcycle jacket and a pair of leggings.
Most of the collections seem to incorporate key items or details that are sports-inspired. At Prada, striped rib or
flat knit trim gave the styles a retro 70's basketball edge. The hoody was showcased at DKNY and Milly while polo
shirt detailing popped up at Tommy Hilfiger.

The bomber jacket and gym shorts were updated both in fabric and color at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Sheer and
cropped variations of the bomber popped up at Vera Wang and athletic powerhouse Lacoste. Rebecca Minkoff
combined athletic stripes and bright active colors with bold graphics and contrast prints for an eclectic version of
this trend. Some brands are playing it a bit safer by simply adding a contrast side stripe to trousers to give them a
track pant feel.

4. The Biker Trend For Women
The Biker Trend Hits The Runway Road
The motorcycle jacket has been cool item for decades and in recent season, this item was embraced by
designers as an important look for both their men’s and women’s collections. Designers such as Belstaff, Fausto
Puglisi, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Burberry Brit and Richard Nicoll included this look in their Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer
runway collections.
For women there are even more choices and biker jackets are available in every color and a plethora of fabrics.
Updated styling details include all manner of studs, printed options and new piecing designs. The biker trend
even extends to denim and pants to incorporate a total look. No longer satisfied with the traditional black
leather staple, designers have embraced bright pop colors such as red, pink and orange and embellished this
item with metal studs, buckles and zippers. Quilted design details are also important and the newest
incarnations are the various printed designs that reflect the current print-driven trend cycle.

5. Women’s Print Trends
The Print Trend Conquers The Runways
There has been an explosion of the print trend recently at every level of fashion. Designers such as Anna Sui,
Thakoon, Peter Pilotto, Prada, Alice Temperley, Etro and Just Cavalli experimented with every print theme and in
many instances combined several of them in one pattern.
Some new and interesting print trends are:
Galactic- space/science fiction inspired prints
Retro Hawaiian florals with an old-school twist
Floral Stripes- floral patterns combined with bold nautical stripes
Black & white geometrics- bold squares, zig-zags and abstract motifs
Grid or window pane prints- graphic update on monochromatic plaids
Animal prints mixed with floral, stripes or geometric prints

These are just a few of the newest print trends currently in vogue. There is so much print direction this year that
every woman should experiment with a few patterns that suits her style. My favorite key item is the print dress of
which there are many beautiful variations for both day and evening wear.
New Print Trend Interpretations
The most progressive designers are showing styles that combine several prints in one garment. Often the prints
are completely different and in past seasons would have been considered clashing. London designer Duro
Olowu is a master of this new mixed-print mashup trend. Another favorite combination are the floral-animal
print hybrid patterns like those from Australian designers India and Scout. This trend continues to inspire
designers and was front and center in their recent Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections.

6. Women’s Denim Trends
Designer Collections Embrace Denim Styling
Denim has become the key category for casual sportswear in the last twenty years. Today, denim can be found at
every retail tier from mass to couture. There are brands that specialize in developing styles with the latest washes
and embellishments and the premium denim category has emerged as an important asset for every collection.
Denim styles are not limited only to jeans. Today, this versatile fabric can be found in every category from dresses
to outerwear as well as accessories from shoes to handbags. In womenswear there are a variety of options available
to women today. No longer considered a casual fabrication, the rise of premium denim fabrics and styling
has increased the popularity and exposure for this fabric that has its roots in workwear.

Key Women's Denim Trends
Some of the key trends include raw denim and styles with raw edges or unfinished edges as seen in the collections
of Jen Kao, Marques Almeida and Jill Stuart. Another trend are patchwork styles like those on display at Desigual
and Junya Watanabe. These can be color or fabric blocked with other shades of denim or with contrast fabrics such
as yarn-dyed plaids or metallics.
The boyfriend jean continues to be an important fit and overalls have made a comeback and are being dressed-up
to wear to work or for a night out on the town. Also important are boxy-shaped jean jackets and denim vests.
Another trend is head to toe denim. This look works well when different washes are worn together to give a tonal
blue effect. Flared denim trousers are also trending. Not quite bell-bottoms, most of these styles come in darker
washes and are a dressier option.
Lighter washes are becoming more popular for womenswear and the return of acid wash styles brings back
memories of the eighties! Shredded and destroyed effects seem to be increasing in importance even though it
seems counterintuitive to pay top dollar for jeans that have extreme rips and tears. Another important denim-like
fabric for spring is chambray. This lighter weight fabrication has a more comfortable hand and works well on
dresses and shirts and can be printed or embellished.

7. The Color-Block Trend
The Color-Block Trend: How To Dress Colorfully
The Color-block trend has always been a popular one for both men and women. Recently designers experimented
with new combinations of color with dazzling results. Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, Michael Kors, Emporio
Armani and a host of others all incorporated a bevy of color-blocked looks in their collections.
The Color-Block Trend For Women
The easiest and most popular of the color-blocking combinations is black and white. This is one of the key color
trends in recent seasons and was expanded on by including all manner of geometric, floral and abstract prints for
both men and women. To see some amazing black and white ensembles, visit my Pinterest board Black & White
Color Direction.

Another easy way to pull off this trend is by simply mixing two or more contrasting pieces, like a knit top and
colored denim jeans for a cleaner, simpler version of this look. You can take some of the color inspiration from
color-blocked styles like those pictured above, and make your own with pieces that mimic these colors.
This season there seems to be an emphasis on retro 70’s inspired color combinations. These colorways have been
updated with bright pop or neon colors to make them more current and appealing than some of their more
muted 70’s versions.
Color blocking can now be found in every item imaginable. Accessories are especially popular and there is a great
assorment of stylish color-blocked styles in shoes, bags and multi-colored bangles.

plunge and experiment with the color-block trend?
8. The Sheer Trend
The Sheer Trend Envelops Fashion Runways
Sheer, diaphanous designs were everywhere on the ready-to-wear runways. The sheer trend has always been a
popular one and this season expect to see even more beautiful designs that elevate this look to new heights.
Barely there looks were embraced by a multitude of designer collections such as Balenciaga, Rebecca Minkoff,
Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Temperley London and Alberta Ferretti.
Every category was represented including beautiful sheer dresses, blouses, skirts and even pants. The styles were
solid, printed and embellished with lace, jewels, crystals and appliqués of every conceivable kind. This trend is so
broad that it encompasses all items of clothing and can be adopted very easily as there is no minimum of
garments to choose from. The versatility of this look allows it to be combined with any of the other current styling,
color and print trends.

Sheer Trend Fabrications
Key fabrications include voile, tulle, organza, batiste and chiffon. An important design element are layered looks
where the sheer fabric is draped or covers another more opaque fabric. This is an important detail as most women
will defer to modesty and not want to expose too much skin for the sake of fashion. For those brave women with
killer gym bodies, this trend is a new way to show off all their hard work to the world.
Other high-tech fabrications like mesh, plastic and sheer metallics were also presented to give this look an edgier
more modern or athletic feel. Women have the option to choose from classic, romantic styles that evoke images
of yesteryear or from more modern interpretations that look to the future for inspiration. Cédric Charlier,
Giambattista Valli, Burberry Prorsum and Milly embraced this sleek, futuristic take in their recent collections.

9. The Cut-Out Trend
Cut-Out Trend Floods Runways And Red Carpets
If you were paying attention to the runways and red carpets during awards season earlier this year, the
cut-out trend was in full view on all the A-list celebrities and super models. Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna,
Lucy Liu, Miley Cyrus as well as models Irina Shayk and Alessandra Ambrosio were seen showcasing their
perfect physiques in daring cut-out dresses.

Cut-Out Trend Options
This look is not for everyone, but if you have a gym-toned body, then this is the trend for you! Designers like
Jason Wu, Emilio Pucci, Alexander Wang, BCBG Max Azria and Cushine et Ochs seem to have taken their
inspiration from swimwear and incorporated it into these architectural designs. The look works best when the
cut-outs are strategically placed to highlight a specific part of the body, whether it is the shoulders, midriff,
back or sides.
Some designs have multiple cut-outs while the more sophisticated versions have one or two cut-out details
that give just a glimpse of skin. This is a much more wearable and desirable way to pull-off this look, especially
if you are body-conscience or just more conservative with your style.

10. Women’s Statement Graphics
Fun Ideas On How To Wear Women's Statement Graphics
Women's statement graphics are a popular design category for women. In the past few seasons they have
started to be embraced at the highest levels as seen in the recent ready-to wear collections by such designers
as Moschino Cheap And Chic, Phillip Lim and Lanvin.
The themes can be inspirational, motivational, conversational or just humorous as shown in the plethora of
designs available at retail. Statement tees can even be dressed up if the saying is witty enough or inspires
a conversation. Since tee shirts are a versatile item in any woman's closet, spicing up your outfits with an
amusing or comical top that showcases your personality is always a fun option.

Statement graphics are so popular that they are showing up on other items such as dresses and accessories.
They can also be a fun way to make a political statement without being too serious or confrontational. My
favorites are those that are a bit tongue n' cheek and that inspire a common sense of acknowledgement or
empathy.
Women's statement graphics can be bold or subtle affirmations that give the viewer some insight into the
wearer's personality while keeping a bit of mystery. So if you want to make a statement and let others know
how you feel about a topic, slogan tees are a perfect fit!

11. The Plaid Trend
Designers Go Mad For The Plaid Trend
Plaids have been popular for centuries and a perennial favorite for Fall. Today, consumers can wear plaids in just
about every category available. Last Fall the plaid trend was clearly on display in the ready-to-wear collections of
designers such as Moschino, Versace, Junya Watanabe, Celine and Tommy Hilfiger.
The Plaid Trend For Women
In womenswear there seems to be no limit as to the variety of plaid patterns and styles that are available this
season. From oversized checks to houndstooth and tartans, designers embraced every plaid variation this year.
Especially strong were the plaids shown in outerwear with an assortment of patterns to choose from.
Chanel F/W 2015 DESIGN OPTIONS New York Fashion Week F/W 2015 Plaid Coat
The recent Fall/Winter 2015 were full of amazing plaid patterns in every shade and scale. Especially important
was the plaid coat. Always a staple in every woman’s closet, this year it is particularly relevent and on trend.
There have also been a plethora of printed plaid patterns, many mixed with other print motifs such as geo-
metrics and florals. I especially like the plaid mix trend where different plaids are combined to make a fresh new
look. There was also a Punk revival with many designers such as Vivienne Westwood updating signature patterns
in bold new ways.

Plaid!. There you can see how the plaid trend is being worn on the street by stylish women everywhere and

12. Women’s Knit Tops
Knit Tops Trends For Every Look
There are so many styles of women's knit tops available at retail that sometimes the choices can be
overwhelming. Styling options cover a wide variety of silhouettes and fabrications and are constantly
evolving to include the latest trend details such as cut-outs, all-over prints and color-blocking. Knit tops
looks can start with a basic tee and transform into intricate styles that include ruffles, bows, ties, shirring
and every type of embellishment.
I will focus on some of the more feminine knit tops that will enrich any woman's closet. Some of my favorite
details for women's knit tops include lace trim, color-blocking, fabric-mixing, cut-out detailing and rhinestoned
beaded tops. Even a simple style can be made into a luxurious item by adding a fabric such as lace or tulle
and embellishing it with trims such as embroidery or sequins.
Carolina Herrera Beaded Knit Top Marc Jacobs Sequin Cashmere Top Donna Karan Stretch Knit Top
Fabrications such as jersey and stretch knits provide a comfortable option to woven shirts and conform and
shape to a women's body. Styles are generally easy to care for and can be worn casually or dressed up depending
on the occasion. Even a graphic tee with a novelty screen print or appliqué can be worn as a statement piece. In
addition to tees, tanks and polos, knit tops come in a wide assortment that includes different lengths, hemlines
and sleeve and collar styles.
Some of the current design elements that were highlighted in the recently unveiled Fashion Week collections
included sheer looks, ruffles, pleating and metallic fabrications. Cropped tops and athletic influences were also
on display in collections from Balenciaga, Jill Sander, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Versace and Prada.
