Hello All, Today I will talk about the costume
of a river valley in the south of Carinthia,
koroska (Slovene), Karnten (German). Most the
German speakers are Slovenes which have lost
their language. Those who identity themselves
as Slovene see this costume as an important
part of their culture identity. Those who speak
German also wear this costume, seeing it as part
of the heritage of their area. This region is
entirely within the present borders of Austria,
although barely; the mountain ridge on the
south side of the valley forms the border of
Austria with Italy and Slovenia.

 Franz Kafka was a German-
speaking Bohemian novelist and short-story
writer, widely regarded as one of the major
figures of 20th-century literature. His work
fuses elements of realism and the fantastic.
 Metamorphosis(German- Die Verwandlung) is a
novella written by Franz Kafka which was
first published in 1915. Metamorphosis tells the
story of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes
one morning to find himself inexplicably
transformed into a huge insect and
subsequently struggles to adjust to this new
condition. The novella has been widely
discussed among literary critics, with differing
interpretations being offered.

THEWORLDOFYESTERDAY
BY STEFANZWEIG
 Stefan Zweig was an Austrian novelist, playwright,
journalist, and biographer. At the height of his literary
career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the
most widely translated and popular writers in the
world.
 It has been called the most famous book on
the Habsburg Empire. He started writing it in 1934
when, anticipating Anschluss and Nazi persecution,
he uprooted himself from Austria to England and later
to Brazil. He posted the manuscript, typed by his
second wife Lotte Altmann, to the publisher the day
before they both committed suicide in February 1942.
The book describes life in Vienna at the start of the
20th century with detailed anecdotes. It depicts the
dying days of Austria-Hungary under Emperor Franz
Joseph I of Austria, including the system of education
and the sexual ethics prevalent at the time, the same
that provided the backdrop to the emergence
of psychoanalysis. Zweig also describes the stability
of Viennese society after centuries of Habsburg rule.

DerTheatermacher
By thomas
 Nicolaas Thomas Bernhard was an
Austrian novelist, playwright and poet who
explored death, social injustice, and human misery
in controversial literature that was deeply
pessimistic about modern civilization in general
and Austrian culture in particular.Bernhard's body
of work has been called "the most significant
literary achievement since World War II."He is
widely considered to be one of the most important
German-language authors of the postwar era.
 Der Theatermacher is a wonderful paradox: an
endless hate monologue on theater by someone
who lives for and from theater. Deep down, it’s a
great declaration of love for all these ridiculously
desperate theater people and unweavering belief
in the necessity of art. Because no matter how
hopeless then situation is the certain must go up,
THE WHEEL OF HISTORY must keep turning.

He involves his whole family in the
production as actors- wife, daughter and
son. The Bruscons heavy mood swings.
He turns out as a tyrant, dissatisfied with
every detail- from stage to room
temperature- and declares that the
village is too small for his outstanding
piece anyway. During rehearsals he
constantly knocks the other down,
highlighting himself as the important

DiunoElegies
By rainermariarilke
 René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was
an Austrian poet and novelist. He is "widely recognized as
one of the most lyrically intense German-language
poets". He wrote both verse and highly lyrical
prose.Several critics have described Rilke's work as
"mystical".
 The Duino Elegies are intensely religious, mystical poems
that employ the symbolism of angels and salvation, but in a
manner atypical with Christian interpretations. Rilke
begins the first elegy in an invocation of philosophical
despair, asking: "Who, if I cried out, would hear me among
the angelic orders?“ the Duino Elegies are described as a
metamorphosis of Rilke's "ontological torment" and an
"impassioned monologue about coming to terms with
human existence", discussing themes of "the limitations
and insufficiency of the human condition and fractured
human consciousness ... man's loneliness, the perfection
of the angels, life and death, love and lovers, and the task
of the poet".

Thus, Notably within the last three quarters of a century, the work of Austrian
writers has provided the body of literature written in the german language with
much the same creative impetus exercised within the past three centuries by
Anglo- Irish writing upon literature in English and, in a period roughly delimited by
gthe years 1935 and 1955, by Southern writing upon the literature of the United
States. Worst yet, by no means all literary critics in Austria itself are agreed that
the country has a literature. What can be labelled as the “Literary establishment”
in the Austrian universities. These scholars, with exceptions, tend to cultivate a
literary pan Germanism coupled with hostility toward living writers on native
ground. They usually buttress their arguments for Austrian writing.
