3. HEALTH LITERACY
•“Health literacy is the degree to which
individuals have the capacity to obtain, process,
and understand basic health information and
services needed to make appropriate health
decisions.”
• U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2000). Healthy people 2010. Retrieved from

6. AUDIENCE
ANALYSIS
Do not use “anyone” or “all
adults” as your audience.
Be very specific about the
needs of a busy nurse manager
and the needs of your
presentation audience
including: age, gender, level of
education and prior knowledge
of the topic, understanding of
language, patient or caregiver.
This week you will be doing a lot of reading that will be relevant to the rest of the course. Take notes as you read to enable you to find significant points from the readings over the next several weeks. Everything provided is to assist you to be successful in this course and may help in other courses in the BSN program. The notes you take now may be useful in other courses, too.
In addition to the readings, you will: become thoroughly familiar with the scenario that forms the basis for all of the assignments; begin understanding your role as a BSN in educating others; consider possible topics that relate to the scenario; learn about audiences OTHER than an instructor and classmates; and, begin the research process using academic databases on the ASU Library website for more robust, comprehensive academic research.
This week’s readings include articles about the concept of “health literacy.” You probably most often think of literacy as the ability to read and write. But, another definition of the word “literacy” is “competence or knowledge in a specific area.” In the digital age, the phrase “digital literacy” is often used, especially in referring to teaching children the proper ways to use the Internet. For our purposes, “health literacy” is what trained professionals must be able to provide to give their patients competence and knowledge to manage a condition or improve their health. That means using a manner and style that is understood by those patients – regardless of age, gender, level of education or socioeconomic status. As BSNs, it will be one of your responsibilities to be on the front line of provding health literacy.
We will use a “scenario” as the basis for all of the assignments. That scenario is provided in the course navigation area. Take the time to read it carefully. After doing that, if you haven’t done so, review all of the assignments in the course to see how they fit together and add the due dates to a calendar that you access everyday.
To help you come to a decision about a topic you will use for the scenario, you’ll throw out some ideas to your classmates and get their feedback on your them. Hopefully, with their suggestions, you’ll be able to narrow your topic down to a specific one AND you will also have a good sense of the audience needs for the Proposal (the nursing supervisor) and for the Presentation (a very specific audience from within the fictional community of ASU General Hospital).
Probably for the first time in your writing, you will be considering audiences other than your instructor and classmates in the manner in which you write. For this class, you are not merely writing more research papers. In fact, I do not want to see anything that comes close to a research paper. You will be researching your topic, but you will be presenting information from your selected sources in different ways after analyzing your audiences and determining what information each audience will need to know to get the response you want from them.
Something else that may be new to you is the use of a Research Log to keep a record of good keywords and search terms you think of and the best databases to use in your research. Having a Research Log helps you if, after starting the Proposal (for example) you find you need additional sources. It lists those keywords and search terms that yielded the most useful sources and those that did not so you do not have to waste time coming up with the best resources all over again.
Do not try to go forward in any of the assignments if you are feeling unsure or confused. Use the Hallway Conversations to ask a question that might benefit everyone. If you would prefer to do it privately, I’m available in several ways to help you. Just because this is an online course does not mean that you have to go it alone. And, do not wait until well into the course to bring your issues to me so we can work them through together!
