This presentation is on a brief case study that I conducted on tribal gaming within six tribal casinos. Through the 1998 Gaming Regulatory Act there are strict guidelines as to where revenue from casinos can share their profit.
The 1998 Gaming Regulatory Act gave strict guidelines to casinos run by tribes as to where a portion of their money would go. All of the money that was donated must be for enrichment purposes on the reservation and the surrounding community. Some examples from general donations would be medical clinics, nonprofit organizations, educating people about Native American heritage, and advancement opportunities.
The Saginaw tribe features a community college on their reservation that is available to all members of the tribe. They also feature a youth program, a center for Native American enrichment, and outreach programs for members of the tribe to serve the greater community.
The San Manuel tribe prides themselves in investing in the future. They have combine businesses off the reservation such as a hotel and casino with other allied partners. They have numerous business opportunities for tribe members who live on and off the reservation as well. The San Maunel’s also have an extensive list of charities and organizations that they contribute funds to.
The Mohegan tribe was the most direct, transparent, and consternated within the information they release to the public about their CSR (Corporate and Social Responsibility). They have very specific projects that they have been working on, such as restoring an old church that dates back to their ancestors and is a vital part of their heritage. The Mohegan’s are also known for their education about their tribe to surrounding community members.
Nature and Environment was the main focus of this tribe. Their casino is featured in a rural area with a limited amount of houses, however they decided to use anti-light pollution technology to combat their negative impact on the environment. They also team up with a local winery to advertise and exclusively carry their products.
When researching this tribe they were very transparent as to the programs and services that they made available to their members.
