Please write clearly and in capital letters. • Use black ink. • Read each question carefully. Make sure you know what you have to do before starting your answer. • Answer all the questions. • Write your answers in the answer booklet. • You are allowed 30 minutes preparation time at the start of the examination to read questions, view the extract and make notes. • You may make notes in your answer booklet. • You should put a diagonal line through the notes in your answer booklet at the end of the examination. • You are allocated 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer the questions. • Do not write in the bar codes. Section A Textual Analysis ADVICE TO CANDIDATES • You have three minutes to read all the questions before the extract begins • The extract will be played four times • First screening: watch the extract; no notes are to be made this time • Second screening: watch the extract and make notes • There will be a break for you to make notes on the answers to the questions • Third screening: watch the extract and make notes • There will be another short break to make notes • Fourth and final screening: watch the extract and make notes The extract is from the film ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’ (Director: Peter Weir, 2003). The year is 1805. Britain is at war with France. Captain Jack Aubrey commands HMS Surprise. He has orders to stop a French ship attacking British ships in the Caribbean. We join the ship while most of the crew sleep. A young officer thinks he sees something in the fog. Answer all three questions. 1 Explain two ways the characters and/or events in the extract fit the action adventure genre. Use examples from the extract. [10] 2 Explain how each of the following is used to create effects that fit the action adventure genre: • soundtrack • camerawork • editing • mise-en-scène. Use examples from the extract.
