Talk given at the BOBCATSSS 2015 conference - http://www.bobcatsss2015.com/.
This paper addresses the problem of open access, with special reference to scientific papers. Scientific communication is the most important for the development and progress of science; it allows scientists to exchange information and experiences. The paper will present results of a study conducted in order to determine how many scientists in the field of information sciences in Croatia are ready to give their papers in open access. The results consist of a quantiative data from analyzing Croatian National Bibliography, and of qualitative data from a survey which provides better understanding of attitudes towards the open access.

2. Open Access
• immediate, free and unlimited online access
to scientific work in digital form
• Two main roads in Open Access:
– Green road
– Gold road
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
3. Research
• Main goal: to determine to what extent are
the scientists in the field of information
sciences in Croatia ready to provide their
papers in open access
• Two parts of the research:
– the availability of papers
– attitudes of the respondents
• 64 scientists in the field of information sciences in
Croatia (Osijek, Zadar, Zagreb)
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
4. Research
• Methodology
– First part of the study: Croatian Scientific
Bibliography (CROSBI)
• Analysis of the electronic papers available in open
access
• categories: original research and review articles in
peer reviewed journals, other publications in peer
reviewed journals, scientific papers in other journals,
other papers in other journals, scientific papers in
conference proceedings with international review
and other refereed conference papers

7. Research
• Methodology
– Second part of the study: a survey
• Questionnaire of eight close-ended questions
• Main goal: to determine the attitudes towards
publishing in open access
• 34 respondents (53%)
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
10. Results: survey
• Personal experience with publishing in OA
– 70.5% always publish a full-text document along
with bibliographic data
– 26.5% occasionally publish bibliographic data
and a full-text document
– One respondent publishes only bibliographic
data, and never a full-text document
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
11. Results: survey
• Reasons for not publishing in OA
– Publisher does not allow (82.4%)
– Coauthors do not want to publish in OA (one
respondent)
– Other reasons:
• The paper won’t be accepted in scientific society if
it’s not published in a journal with high impact factor
– Not one respondent answered that they don’t
want to publish in OA
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
12. Results: survey
• Personal experience with publishing in OA
– 70.5% always publish a full-text document along
with bibliographic data
– 26.5% occasionally publish bibliographic data
and a full-text document
– One respondent publishes only bibliographic
data, and never a full-text document
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
13. Results: survey
• Self-archiving
– Institutional repositories (85.3%)
– CROSBI (67.6%)
– Other services:
• Research Gate, Academia.edu, Slide Share,
Mendeley, Zenodo
• One respondent publishes his papers on his own
website
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
14. Results: survey
• Embargo period
• Protects the revenue of publisher
– 55.9% of respondents answered that it is
important to them
– 8.8% said that it is of great importance
– 17.6% said that it is not important
– 17.6% said that they are not familiar with
embargo
Antun Matanović & Ivana Manojlović
15. Conclusion
• Most of the papers in the field of Information
Sciences in Croatia are available in OA
• The percentage of the papers published in OA
per a professor is very high
• Most positive results from analyzing CROSBI
were those from the University in Zagreb
• Croatian scientist in the field of Information
Sciences are fully aware of benefits of
publishing in OA and support the Open Access
Initiative
