This document provides an agenda and instructions for a webinar on building consortia for the Farming Innovation Pathways competition. The webinar will include presentations on the competition overview and guidance, followed by pre-recorded presentations on selected industry challenges. Participants will then break into virtual rooms to discuss challenges and develop ideas, guided by facilitators. They will switch rooms periodically. The goal is to connect farmers, innovators, researchers and businesses to develop solutions to farming challenges.

14. Farming Innovation Pathways
• Defra has developed Farming Innovation Pathways in partnership with UKRI to help drive
sustainable productivity and profitability in agriculture during the Agricultural Transition.
• We want to encourage farmers, growers and producers to get involved in R&D, working in
collaboration with industry and researchers to tackle their on-farm challenges.
• This competition will help to bridge the gap between the closing stages of Transforming Food
Production and the launch of Defra’s Innovation R&D Package in 2022, where there will be
further opportunities for ambitious and promising innovation.

17. Your project must
• Engage with farmers, growers or producers to develop farm-focused solutions.
• Focus on innovative solutions that can be easily integrated, taken-up and widely adopted
• Address at least one of the four industry subsectors:
• Livestock (for example: beef, dairy, sheep, pigs, poultry)
• Plant (for example: arable, horticulture, vegetable production)
• Novel food production systems
• Bioeconomy and agroforestry
• Focus on one or more of the high priority areas for the relevant industry subsector – see
competition brief and contact us if you are unsure if your project falls within scope.
• Your project can be based anywhere in the UK but must benefit the English farming sector

19. Meeting the Brief
Projects must:
• Address problems identified by farmer and industry needs
• Have clear links to farmers, growers, agri-businesses, and other potential end users
• Focus on innovative solutions that can be integrated into the sector with the potential to be
taken up and widely adopted

24. Approach
• Presenters will provide a brief overview of selected industry challenges
• Attendees will then be split into break-out rooms to discuss challenges and develop ideas
• Each room will be guided by an ‘issue holder’ (one of the presenters) and a KTN facilitator
• After 30 min, the issue holders and KTN facilitators will switch rooms
• After a further 20 min, the issue holders and KTN facilitators will again switch rooms
• After another 10 min, attendees will be brought back together for closing remarks
