TOPIC NUMBER 1 -
HORIZON-CL2-2022-DEMOCRACY-01-01: Artificial
intelligence, big data and democracy
Proposed Approach
We aim to investigate the perception of barriers / resources to participation in the social and
economical sphere, particularly in the workplace and institutional contexts, among persons exposed
to multiple discrimination (particularly, related to gender and disability).
We propose qualitative research approaches based on analysis of the representations of gender and
disabled identities through interviews, social media, and multimodal analysis of interactions in
'real-world’ situations at work and in institutions.
In line with the Scope, we aim to address socio-cultural aspects related particularly to gender and
disability that impact individual position and rights in society and social hierarchy, as well as
individual life and career choices.

05: Gender and social, economic and cultural
empowerment
Proposed Approach
I am a Labour law scholar and my approach is through case law and jurisprudence. I have nevertheless collaborated in the past with
economists and work organization experts.
I would support the team in discussing the rationale of decisions developed at national and international levels, by the EU Courts and by the
EHCR, the ILO’s boards of experts, and on the other side by collective agreements.
What part of the Scope do you want to address?
I am particularly interested on discriminations against people with disabilities and especially people with mental health issues, related or
unrelated to work place issues, and discrimination against people with behavioural borderline mental issues: the grey area between mental
pathologies and personal behaviours affected or affecting wellbeing in the workplace: of course protecting individual privacy. The aim is to
develop legal policies and contractual policies aimed at integrating people in society with a peculiar interest on work as a mean of personal
development not only as a tool meant at satisfying economic needs.
If you are looking for partners, what type of partners are you looking for?
Academic partners, organization of the Third sector, trade unions, employers’ associations
Organisational Capabilities
I work in Padova with a team of 8 people with a legal expertise. I have
agreed on the collaboration on the Horizon project with group of
scholars and activist who are interested in gender medicine
(http://www.centrostudinazionalesalutemedicinadigenere.it/).
I have also agreed on the collaboration on this possible project with the
CSV (the mains associations of services for the Third sector bodies).
The team of Bari University directed by professor Carla Spinelli would join
the Padova team
Experience
I have strong technical legal skills. My academic research has covered many topics and I consider it as a plus because I think I can work
having earned the sensibility for interpretation of the law base on a wider perspective.
I am able to attract big names in my field through the collaborations I have developed over the years in Italy and abroad (University of
Toronto, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Urbana-Champaing (IL), ColombiaUniversity).
I have strong links with the Italian judiciary bodies and the ILO.
For 6 years I have been Director of a philanthropic Italian Foundation worth 2billions Euros assets which supports the health public service
and Third sectors bodies also supporting social inclusion projects.
I am the president of the University of Padova’s legal course for Third Sector Legal Experts and I have strong links with private institutions in
the social economy. My aim is to collaborate with these entities over the Horizon program in order to study the best practice and their
legal/contractual background.

Call A sustainable future for Europe (HORIZON-CL2-2022-TRANSFORMATIONS-01)
Mental Health in a Sustainable Work Organization
Università degli Studi di
Padova
Proposed Approach
The Rule of law (RoL) is a set of principles under which persons, institutions, and powers are guided
by and accountable to, a pillar of the EU. Our proposal pivots on a horizontal innovative
understanding of the RoL (as opposed to the more traditional “vertical understanding”) and on an
understanding of rights as “empowerment”, impacting especially the marginalised and disadvantaged
youth.
We want to focus on the specific role played by the education to RoL in the wider domain of civic
education. Analysing the notion implied in the path of civic education according to the United
Nations, the European Union, and the Italian government. Constructing a frame for civic education
where the different kinds of knowledges and skills dealing with Rol, citizenship, and human rights are
clearly identified in different realms and linked according to an explicit path. Suggesting innovative
perspective that are effective in the face of the current challenges to social inclusiveness, democracy
and respect for human rights.
We are looking for partners who are established academics in the field of law and political sciences.
Organisational Capabilities
Our research group of philosophers of law offers
strong analytical and research skills, an innovative
approach to research, a dynamic and diverse
intellectual environment, international breadth,
advanced infrastructure in five major Universities
across Italy (Palermo, Padua, Enna, Bari).
Our organisation is academic. The project will have
the following theoretical and practical benefits:
reorganising and rearticulating the teaching of civic
education; theorising and testing an innovative
approach to RoL and human rights, bearing potential
strong social impact on the youth, countering
discrimination; supporting responsible behaviour
towards the environment; improvement of the
economic and social inclusion.
Experience
The members of our team are full professors and researchers in the field of Philosophy of Law and
Political Sciences, with outstanding publication record in the field of human rights, the rule of law.
Each of the members of our team conducted research in the context of EU research grants and
national research grants which proved to be ground-breaking.
Our project concept is innovative and has strong potential practical impact, our past experience
includes international cooperation with the leading academics in the field. Of the rule of law and
human rights, we established a large and international network ranging from academics,
practitioners, judges, high level officials that can be put to use in the project.
Administrative Information
We are planning on being the Coordinator of the
project.

HORIZON-CL2-2022-DEMOCRACY-01-04: Education for democracy
Proposed Approach
Classroom drama and applied theatre are new education and training formats that incorporate
creative approaches.
Research shows that these approaches can have an impact on e.g. bolstering democratic citizenship,

disability inclusiveness, a culture of peace and non-violence, environmental awareness,
appreciation of linguistic, ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, tackling radicalisation and
successful integration of migrants and refugees along with other aspects mentioned in the call.
We would like to develop novel curricula, educational material and innovative pedagogical practices
in different settings and assess the developed methods with experimental participatory research
and mixed method research to build robust evidence base for redesigning curricula.

  • 21. Proposed Approach The Rule of law (RoL) is a set of principles under which persons, institutions, and powers are guided by and accountable to, a pillar of the EU. Our proposal pivots on a horizontal innovative understanding of the RoL (as opposed to the more traditional “vertical understanding”) and on an understanding of rights as “empowerment”, impacting especially the marginalised and disadvantaged youth. We want to focus on the specific role played by the education to RoL in the wider domain of civic education. Analysing the notion implied in the path of civic education according to the United Nations, the European Union, and the Italian government. Constructing a frame for civic education where the different kinds of knowledges and skills dealing with Rol, citizenship, and human rights are clearly identified in different realms and linked according to an explicit path. • 23. Proposed Approach Classroom drama and applied theatre are new education and training formats that incorporate creative approaches. Research shows that these approaches can have an impact on e.g. bolstering democratic citizenship, promotion of core values like human rights and the rule of law, promotion of gender equality, disability inclusiveness, a culture of peace and non-violence, environmental awareness, appreciation of linguistic, ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, tackling radicalisation and successful integration of migrants and refugees along with other aspects mentioned in the call. We would like to develop novel curricula, educational material and innovative pedagogical practices in different settings and assess the developed methods with experimental participatory research and mixed method research to build robust evidence base for redesigning curricula. Organisational Capabilities Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is one of the largest educational institutions in Norway, with about 17,000 students. 5 campuses, 4 faculties. Drama section is part of the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports, located in Bergen. Experience This academic year marks the 50th anniversary of drama education both at HVL and in Norway.
