The main objective of the Grand Valley State University
Farmers Market is to create an atmosphere where local
food vendors can collaborate with GVSU in delivering
fresh and wholesome food for staff, faculty, students
and surrounding community members. Generating
profits for local farms while also providing the
community nutritional food options. We can make a
difference, and have fun doing it. Together we can plant
the seed to LIVE BETTER BY CHOICE.

GVSU FARMERS MARKET OPENING DAY:
SUMMER GRILL CHALLENGE
June 3, 11:00am to 1:00pm
LOCATION??
Attend opening day of market and vote for your favorite
grill recipe! Facilities Services staff guest grillers grill off
for public vote! Taste test each recipe for a $6 donation.
All proceeds go to a selected organization in need.
In the event of inclement weather, the challenge will
move to the following week.
COMPETITION NUTRITION (W)
May 4 through June 15
Register starting April 27
Competition Nutrition is a six-week program that
encourages you to eat healthier. You’ll earn points for
eating fruits and vegetables while receiving educational
tips and healthy recipes along the way. Whether you want
to lose weight, improve your health or have some friendly
competition with your co-workers, this challenge is for you!
Participants will choose a produce level for how many
servings of fruits and vegetables they want to aim to
eat each day:

Track your active commutes to work using the West
Michigan Rideshare tool through The Rapid and help
GVSU beat other area Universities and organizations by
accumulating the most trips. Daily prize drawings for
participants who track trips! Overall winners will be
announced during a Handlebar Happy Hour-Special
Edition hosted by the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle
Coalition.
Start at www.acwgr.org. Register for the challenge through
the West Michigan Ride Share link and select Grand Valley
State University from the drop down to make it count for
GVSU’s team and to qualify for prizes!

Ever wanted to try SPINNING, Yoga or strength training?
A variety of fitness classes are open to GVSU faculty, staff
and family members each Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer.
Two sessions are offered each semester.
SMALL GROUP FITNESS (W)
Spring/Summer Session is May 11-July 31
Cost is $60; opportunity to carry over payment
into the next series!
Are you ready to take your fitness level to the next step?
Small group instruction is an alternative to one-on-one
training. Whether it be for fat loss, general conditioning, or
elite level athletics, the added motivation of having others
working out in the same room with you, pushes you to a
new effort level. You will receive accountability, motivation,
support, experience and expert guidance to reach your
fitness goals at an economical rate. Class size is limited to
8 people.
INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI (W)
May 13 from 12:00pm-1:00pm
Winter Hall 205
Calm your mind, enliven your spirit and strengthen and relax
your entire body through the practice of Tai Chi. Participants
in this beginners workshop will learn the full form of Thai Chi
moments, proper form and specific breathing techniques.

MINDFUL EATING

In this 60-minute class you will learn why diets often don’t
work, tips for eating mindfully and how to use the hunger
scale to better identify your feelings of true hunger and
fullness.

Registered Dietician, Jody Vogelzang presents recipe tips
and tricks for fresh and healthy cooking using ingredients

When it comes to college planning, it may seem like
there are a million things to think about, but don’t worry
we are providing you, as the parent of a college-bound
student, an opportunity to ask the experts here at GVSU
about college planning. If you havea junior high or
early high school student, then the time to find out about
college admission is now. Please join us for a presentation
by Jodi Chycinski, Admissions and Erika Wallace, Financial
Aid to answer your questions regarding college admission.
Light refreshments will be served.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING (WL)
May 19 and May 21 from 8:00am-12:00pm

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based, innovative
8-hour course designed to give you the tools to recognize
a range of mental health problems and the skills and
confidence to help someone in a mental health crisis. The
training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs
of addictions and mental illnesses. The course trains
participants to help people who may be experiencing a
mental health problem or crisis. You can expect to learn:
Risk factors and warning signs of mental health
problems
Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis
and addicition disorders
A 5-step action plan to help someone developing a
mental health problem or in crisis
Where to turn for help - professional, peer and
self-help resources
The training is provided by the Mental Health Foundation of
West Michigan.

Being a mom is the hardest and best job that you will ever
do! Working Mothers today confront not only conflicting
demands on their time and energy, but also conflicting
ideas about how they are to behave: they must be
nurturing and unselfish while engaged in child rearing, but
competitive and ambitious at work. Meet with other GVSU
Moms around interesting topics of discussion to both
young moms and more experienced moms. Faculty, staff
and students are all welcome.
ENCOMPASS, GVSU’S EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE
SERVICE (WL)
Offered through GVSU Work Life Connections, Encompass
is GVSU’s employee assistance program. Faculty, staff and their
dependents have access to 5 free counseling session with a
trained and licensed professional counselor. All visits are stictly
confidential and can be set up by calling Encompass directly at
1.800.952.3586. Encompass is available to help with life’s
stressor’s including marriage counseling, relationship
challenges, parenting, anxiety, depression and more.

Want to go to the gym but afraid you’ll get lost inside? Every
third Monday of the month tour the highlights of the GVSU

1:00pm.

Healthcare Bluebook tool from Priority Health makes health
care comparison shopping easy by showing a range of
prices, along with what is considered a Fair Price, for more
than 200 common procedures, including surgery, labs and
imaging tests. The price ranges displayed come directly from
what providers in the Priority Health network charge for the
procedures. Log into www.priorityhealth.com and click on the
Health Care Blue Book button on the homepage.
PRIORITY HEALTH COST ESTIMATOR (B)
Priority Health’s newest tool, the Cost Estimator, combines
doctor and facility pricing information with your personal
benefit and deductible balances to give a close estimate of
your out-of-pocket costs. Giving you a say in how you spend
your health dollars. Log into www.priorityhealth.com and click
on the Cost Estimator button in the center of the homepage.

COMPETITION NUTRITION (W) May 4 through June 15 Register starting April 27 Competition Nutrition is a six-week program that encourages you to eat healthier. You’ll earn points for eating fruits and vegetables while receiving educational tips and healthy recipes along the way. Whether you want to lose weight, improve your health or have some friendly competition with your co-workers, this challenge is for you! Daily prize drawings for participants who track trips! Overall winners will be announced during a Handlebar Happy Hour-Special Edition hosted by the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition. The course trains participants to help people who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
