2. What Are Sexually
Transmitted Infections???
 Sexually Transmitted Infections or STIs
(also known as Sexually Transmitted
Diseases STDs) are caught by having
unprotected sex with someone who has an
STI.
 You can get an STI from all forms of sex.
 Vaginal Sex
 Anal Sex
 And yes you can get an STI from Oral Sex

3. Just How Serious are STIs???
• STIs can cause sterility, infertility and
numerous health related complications.
• STIs are very serious especially when left
untreated.
• 1 in 4 teens between the ages of 13-24 will
contract an STI within a year.
• Certain STIs can be spread from an
infected mother to her unborn baby or
infant.

4. How Will I Know if I Have an
Sexually Transmitted Infection???
• Most STIs have No Symptoms.
• Sores or irritation to the penis,
vagina, anus, mouth or throat.
• Unusual discharge
• Painful or burning urination
• Itching, rashes, warts, etc.

• Gonorrhea is the
oldest of all STIs.

• Some strands of
Gonorrhea are
resistant to
antibiotics.
• It is also know as the
drip and the clap.
• It is usually curable
with antibiotics.

14. Symptoms of Gonorrhea
• Thick white,
yellowish, or
yellow-green pus
like discharge from
the penis or vagina.
• Itching or burning
during urination.
• Gonorrhea can be
asymptomatic.

effect the eyes
and throat.
• Mothers can pass
Gonorrhea to the
baby during birth.

17. Syphilis
• Syphilis is the 3rd
bacterial STI.
• It is also known as
“The Great
Imitator.”
– it mimics the
symptoms of other
STIs
• It is curable with
antibiotics.
• Syphilis occurs in 3
stages.

• Painless sores on
the genitals called
chancre sores.
• Rash over the body.
• Syphilis can cause
sterility and death
if it is left
untreated.

21. Trichomoniasis
• Trich is a common
parasitic STI that
affects both men and
women.
• Trich is caused by the
protozoan parasite
Trichomonas vaginalis.
• Trich is curable with
medication.

22. Symptoms of Trichomoniasis
• Unusual discharge
from the penis or
vagina.
• Discharge with a
strange odor.
• Slight burning
sensation after
urinating or
ejaculating (males).
• Damage to the cervix

Trichomoniasis
• If left untreated, Trichomoniasis can
cause:
An increase in a woman's susceptibility
to HIV infection if she is exposed to the
virus.
An increased chance of an HIV-infected
woman passing HIV to her sex partner(s).

24. Pubic Lice
• Pubic lice or crab lice
are small, light brown,
flat insects that cling
to pubic hair.
• Pubic lice suck blood
for nourishment, and
fix their eggs (nits) to
the pubic hairs.
• Pubic Lice are curable.

• Little red sores in
your pubic area
and/or lower
abdomen.
• Itching in the pubic
area.
• Visible nits
• Crawling lice

• Scabies can be
transmitted
through sexual
contact.
• Anyone can get
Scabies.
• Scabies is curable.

• Intense itching,
especially at night
• Red rash
• Crusty and scaly

• Little red bumps

• Tiny bites

• Genital Herpes is
caused by the
Herpes Simplex II
Virus.
• 1 out of 5 teen and
adults in the U.S.
has genital herpes.
• There is NO cure
for Herpes.

tiny blister to appear
around your mouth.
• Genital Herpes causes
tiny blisters to appear
on your genitals.
• Fever
• Painful urination
• Headaches

Reoccurring outbreaks
Suppressed immune system
More susceptible to HIV infection.

• HPV is the virus that
causes genital warts.
• Certain strands of
HPV causes cervical
cancer and penile
cancer.
• Most HPV infections
are asymptomatic.
• There is NO cure
available for HPV.
• The new HPV Vaccine.

• Warts, small fleshy
bumps on the penis or
vaginal area.
• White patches on the
labia, inside the vagina,
on the penis or around
the anus.
• Not everyone with
HPV will have genital
warts.

people from
contracting HBV.
