2. MEANING OF CORRECT POSTURE
Correct posture means the balancing of the body in accurate and proper manner while sitting,
standing, reading, writing or during any other action of body. The foremost impression of an
individual is gathered from how he stands, sits and walks. In a proper posture , the whole body
weight falls on the both feet without any effort and the entire body appears to be in a vertical
line. In this position all the limbs of the body perform their functions efficiently. Posture is
dynamic and changes according to the activity.
Avery
“good posture is one in which the body is so balanced as to produce least fatigue.”
Correct posture may also be defined as that assumed position which enable the body to
performe of function effectively.
3. CORRECT POSTURE OF STANDING
In standing both the heel of the feet should
meet each other. Toes of the feet should be 3
inches to 4 inches apart. The whole body
should be erect, straight knees, chin inside,
chest forward, belly backward and pressed
inside with equal body weight on the both feet.
In this position, the complete body should be
balanced. From the side line of the center of
gravity must pass through the ear. Shoulder,
hip, knee and ankle. In such a position the
muscles and ligaments remain free of stress.
4. CORRECT POSTURE OF SITTING
When we sit in chair our hips should be as far
back in the chair as possible. Head, spinal
column, shoulder and hips should be in straight
line and erect. Legs should touch the ground
and not in hanged position. Thighs should be in
horizontal position. While we read, the book
should be on the table but the book should not
be too away or near the eyes. The approximate
distance between book and eyes should be at
least 30cms. If we do not follow this rule than
eye sight problem may occur.
5. CORRECT POSTURE OF WALKING
Correct posture of walking is always commended
everywhere and everyone. It reflects the personality
of an individual. It indicates inferiority complex if an
individual walks with dropped neck and imbalanced
steps. If someone walks with imbalanced steps. If
someone walks with erect neck and chest out, it is
an example of superiority complex. In fact, the best
posture of walking is that the lines of the feet
should be parallel to the line of the direction. The
heel of the foot should touch the ground and then
weight should be transferred to the toes. It means,
there should heel toe action. Walking should be
efficient and graceful. Smoothness is essential in
walking. If we adopt wrong posture of walking we
may get fatigue at the earliest.
6. CORRECT POSTURE LYING
Normal size of the pillow should be used by the children. Hard bed is beneficial for those, who
have spinal problems. We should sleep in such state that we should not feel any difficulty in
respiration.
7. ADVANTAGES OF CORRECT POSTURE
Physical appearance
Grace and efficiently of movements
Physical fitness
Hygienic value
Social value
Economic value
Prevent disorder and diseases
Change in mental attitude
Lessens the fatigue
Improves speech
8. COMMON POSTURAL DEFORMITIES
Various types of postural deformities are discussed below
1. Spinal curvature
2. Flat foot
3. Knock knees
4. Bow legs
9. Spinal Curvature
This type of deformity is related to spine.
This type of deformity is caused by carrying
excessive weight beyond capacity. In other
way we can say that weak muscles cause
the formation of spinal curvature.
Kyphosis
Lordosis
Scoliosis
Flat Foot
Our feet act as the base of support for the
body in standing, walking, running, and
jumping. Flat foot is commonly found
among newly born babies but it become a
postural deformity if it still persists during
lateral childhood. The children with flat foot
deformity cannot be efficient sportsperson.
Such children feel pain in feet. They faces
problem in standing and walking.
10. Knock Knees
The knock knees is one of the major
postural deformities. In this deformity both
knees knock or touch each other in normal
standing position. The gap between ankles
goes on increasing. The individual faces
difficulty in walking and running.
Bow Legs
It is also a postural deformity. It is opposite
to knock knees position. If there is wide gap
between the knees when standing with the
feet together, the individual has bow legs.
